Flexible and compact NIV ventilator: Carina®

The road to recovery Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in general can helppatients to recover faster, reduce the rate ofventilator associated pneumonia and avoid thesetback of reintubation in a variety of clinicalsettings. Patient benefit has been clearlydemonstrated in a growing number of studies1.

Dräger has developed an innovative type of highperformance NIV ventilator. One that is comfortable for both the patient and thecaregiver, compact and mobile enough to optimizeworkflow and workspace usage and clever enoughto recognize changes in flow parameters andpatient status, providing just the right amount ofsupport while giving the patient room to breathe.

The Carina provides high-performance non-invasive ventilation therapy. It features a range of ventilation modes forspontaneous and mandatory ventilation. In addition, the Carina can even be used forinvasive ventilation should the need arise, allowingthe caregiver maximum flexibility.

Carina® non-invasive accessories

Dedicated accessories support the selectedventilation mode and allow the caregiver to use thedevice according to different applications andpatient profiles:

Leaks are a common challenge in non-invasiveventilation. Rapid recognition of leaks can mean the difference between success and setback.The unique Dräger SyncPlus functionalityaddresses this challenge by offering:

– Automatic leakage compensation– Cycle learning technology: the trigger sensitivity

is constantly adapted to the patient’s breathingpatterns

– Multi-sense triggering by closely analyzing flow,pressures and flow gradient

DEDICATED BREATHING CIRCUIT

For non-invasive ventilation it is recommended touse the leakage valve breathing system. This convenient disposable single-hose breathingsystem allows the accurate calculation andadjustment of volumes. Due to its patented designthe Dräger breathing system VentStar LeakVoptimally supports the leakage compensationcapabilities of the Carina. In addition, the design of the leak valve preventsthe breathing circuit from twisting which avoidsocclusion and insufficient ventilation of the patient.

NON-INVASIVE MASKS

The Carina breathing system is completed by theDräger non-invasive ventilation full-face masks:ClassicStar and NovaStar. Because both maskscover the nose and mouth, they provide an effectivetherapy even in case of mouth breathing.

The two major challenges in terms of non-invasivepatient interfaces are maximize patient comfort andminimize leakages. The air-filled mask cushion of the ClassicStar SENIV mask can be adjusted to the patient’s facialcontours by inflating or deflating the mask cushionwhich increases comfort and makes a moreeffective seal. The NovaStar SE NIV mask providesan individual –”customized”– fit due to theembedded pliable ring in the flexible, transparent,soft mask shell combined with a silicone gel maskcushion for premium comfort and seal. Additionalfeatures, which include the individual adjustableforehead support and lightweight rapid fixationhead gear, emphasize the convenience of both NIVmasks.

The ClassicStar NIV masks are designed for singleuse. The NovaStar NIV masks can be cleaned andre-used maximum five times.

INVASIVE VENTILATION

In case of changes in the patient constitution the Carina can be used for invasive ventilation. For this kind of application the VentStar CarinaExpV breathing system should be used. It is alsorecommended for the use in situations whereoxygen consumption could be critical. Providing a maximum pressure of 50 mbar the VentStarCarina ExpV should be used in patient profiles in which a higher pressure is essential.
