Panfield Garden – Pocket Park
We have applied for a grant to create “Panfield Garden Pocket Park”. The proposed site is on the
green in the middle of the village. During the fete last year we did show our plans to create a
memorial garden on the green but the possibility of this grant means that we could be a bit more
ambitious. The purpose would be to create a focal point in the village.
We do need to raise funds to achieve the matched funding element of this grant so if you have a
business or know someone who would like to support please point them in my direction; this could
be supported through either direct contribution or raw materials. All contributions large or small
are most welcome.
We are also hoping that some local builders and gardeners would be willing to give their
professional advice and time to support in its development.
If our grant application is unsuccessful we still intend to proceed with the memorial garden. One of
the reasons that we are determined to complete the memorial garden this year is recognising the
75th Anniversary of VE Day on Friday 8 May 2020
I’m sure you are all aware that May bank holiday has moved from a Monday to Friday 8 May. We’re
in the early planning stage but we’re working with The Bell to organise an event that day. This
could include an afternoon tea party with music and dress from the War period and finish at
3.00pm when the nation is asked to “Raise a Glass”. We are looking for any info, stories, photos or
people during this period or just after from the village or the neighbouring areas, my contact details
are below. Keep this date reserved in your diary and keep following us on facebook as we will share
more information closer to the time.
---oOo---
The end of last year was a very busy month for the PCA. At the end of November we held our
AGM. I was re-elected Chair and would like to thank the committee and all the villagers for their
support over the last year.
We are always looking for volunteers but that doesn’t mean you have to attend every meeting or
support every event. Our next meeting is on Monday 17 February 8.00 pm (Panfield Village Hall)
we are a friendly group (really, we are and we have a lot of fun) and you will be made very welcome.
We had our Vintage Villagers Lunch in December which again was fully booked with 43 residents
and was enjoyed by all on the day. This led into our traditional Santa Claus deliveries on Christmas
Eve which just seems to be going from strength to strength with our best year yet, over 160
presents delivered throughout the village.
We watched “Yesterday” as our last “Panfield Presents” film of the year we had a good turnout even
if we were competing with the Strictly Dancing Final. It’s been a great new addition to the village,
and we are really pleased with how the village has responded so I hope to see you all there during
the coming year.

Unmentioned in Despatches
Some of them never come home to fanfares,
they dump their kit-bags down at the door,
kiss their wives and let their children
wrestle them down to the kitchen floor,
switch the telly on, pour out a whiskey,
search for the local football score.
Some of them skip the quayside welcome,
dodge the bunting and cannonade,
make their landfall in silent harbours,
nod to the coastguard, but evade
the searchlight of public scrutiny
like those engaged in the smuggling trade.
Some of them land at lonely airfields
far removed from the celebration,
hang their flying gear in a locker,
cadge a lift to the railway station,
make for home and take for granted
the short-lived thanks of a grateful nation.
Some of them miss the royal salute,
the victory parade along the Mall,
the fly-past, the ships in formation passing
the cheering crowds on the harbour wall.
Remembered only by friends and relatives,
some of them never come home at all.

Our Community Website
As previously mentioned, the Panfield community website is moving as our current host is closing
down at the end of March 2020.
The new website address will be www.panfieldvillage.uk
The new site will keep its community feel and all Parish Council information will also continue to be
available using the ‘panfieldvillage.uk’ address.
The new site will be live from 31 March.
New telegraph poles in Shalford Road
The erection of new telegraph poles along Shalford road was brought to the council’s attention by
residents recently; no prior notice of the work was given; the poles just stated appearing.
The Councils investigations resulted in the following information:
“County Broadband are installing telegraph poles to accommodate a connection to ‘superfast broadband’.
Statutory undertakers are able to install telecommunications equipment such as new or replacement telegraph poles
and wires without a need for planning permission, using Class A, Part 16, Schedule 2 of the Town and Country
Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 (as amended). It is rare that the Local
Planning Authority will be notified of the installation of new telegraph poles, and when we are, it is for
information only. It would be my advice that you liaise directly with County Broadband. I can confirm that
neither BDC nor ECC are funding any work with County Broadband.”
The Election
Following the recent election, I thought it would be timely to confirm the councillors that support our
village:
Something not widely known, is that Peter, Vanessa, and Graham are regular visitors to Parish Council
meetings, are very helpful with many issues, and are always ‘to hand’ to advise. James Cleverly is, quite
understandably, less ‘visible’ though he has been in attendance at our annual fete and represents our
interests in Parliament. It is nice to know, that the people that are voted in to office genuinely care and
help.
If you would like more details or like to comment on these, or any other matters please come along to a
Council meeting or contact the Parish Clerk (details below).

No new incidents have been reported to us since the last issue of RAP. The police reports to continue
to report the usual group of burglaries and theft of vehicles in our area but Panfield is thankfully a
quiet and peaceful village.
However, none of us is immune from the scams which reach us via the internet. The use of a good
anti-virus program on your computer and mobile phone together with a password manager should be
enough for most people.

How Secure Is Your Home?
We are still experience around the county a number of burglaries that have occurred where either doors
are not being locked or not locked correctly. You can reduce the risk of being a victim of burglary by
simply taking the time to ensure you understand how your door locks and keeping your property
secure.
It may sound obvious, but do you know how your doors lock? There are so many types of doors
and perhaps your door may have been changed or you may have moved to a new house. Many types
of doors can be fitted with a multi-point locking system that as the name suggests has several
locking points compared to the older traditional night latch (Yale lock) and mortice lock that each
lock in one point.
Most multi-point locking systems have a latch enabling the door to be held closed on the latch upon
closing the door and several bolts or hooks that are engaged when you lift the handle. The Latch –
depending on the type of lock the latch may operate with both the indoor and outdoor handles or just
the indoor handle, try your door and see which you have. The bolts or hooks - these provide the
security for your door but only if you lock them in place with the key. The method – upon closing
the door lift the handle putting all the bolts or hooks in place, on going out lock these all in place with
the key, upon locking up indoors use the key as before or the thumb turn if applicable. Until locked in
place the hooks or bolts can be released by someone using the outside door handle. If you use a key to
operate the lock indoors ensure that you store the key close to the door in case of emergency, but make
sure that any keys are out of view from windows and doors.
The Back door - also, we have had some burglaries where the occupants of the house are in their
lounge watching TV and in slips the burglar via the insecure rear door, takes what is in that room, the
car keys and the car from the drive. Firstly, think about your rear boundaries, invest in good fencing
and gate(s) 1.8m (6 feet) high, some spiky bushes or climbing plants and fit and use locks to secure the
gate. If you need to come and go through the gate use a key operated lock to secure the gate. Secondly
if you are not in the room, or using the rear door, keep it locked, you can also get fairly inexpensive
battery operated PIR alarms to alert you if the beam across the door is broken.

Dear Friends,
We are well over a month into 2020 now, and the last year is fast becoming a memory! No doubt
2020 will be another year of significant events, not least on May 8 when as a nation, and village, we
will mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, of which more information will follow in due course.
However, in amongst those special events will be the annual ones we all mark from birthdays to
anniversaries, and our shops are often telling us exactly what is to come, at least 6 weeks in advance.
For some it will be Valentine’s Day that is the next to be marked. The chocolates, flowers and gifts
though are a far cry from the original story inspired by the Saint, or should I say Saints involved. As
it is believed that St Valentine is actually two different Valentines whose stories have been put
together. There was Valentine, a 3rd century Bishop and then the Valentine, (also around the same
time) who was martyred. He famously wrote letters to his love and reputedly signed them ‘from
your valentine’. However, compared to the Bishop, this Valentine was a nobody and it is thought
their stories then merged. The story became one of commitment, and sacrifice, and I think they are
the true characteristics we celebrate today.
We often refer to friends or family members as being a saint. I am sure you can think of some from
your own lives. What is (or was) the hallmark of their life? I imagine both commitment and
sacrifice are a big part of that. How wonderful then, if inspired by both Valentines, instead of only
acknowledging our partner, or significant other, that we also recognise and thanked all the saints in
our lives.
We all know how appreciative we are when someone says, ‘thank you’, so I for one will certainly
trying to thank the saints in my life in the weeks to come. Mothering Sunday later in March is
another chance to do just that, to say thank you to those who support, care for and guide us. For
many that is, or was, their Mum, but lives are often more complicated than that, so Mothering
Sunday is increasingly becoming a day to remember all those we wish to thank.
Here at Panfield Church we will be marking Mothering Sunday with a special Messy Church session
on March 22 which will be begin at 10.30am with craft making and biscuit decorating, then a
short service from 11.15am to give thanks. Everyone is very welcome.
As we think about the saints in our lives, there will also be those saints who are now no longer with
us, and that can be hard to bear at times. I know personally that Mothering Sunday can be very hard
for people too. But those all-important saints left a mark that ran much deeper, shared a loved that
ran much deeper, and nothing can or will break that, even if we can no longer see them, we can
certainly still give thanks.
So let us take with us a spirit of thankfulness, remembering not just the saints around us, but the
people for whom we might very well be the saint!
With every blessing,
Rod
