Ahmedabad Today…

Focus on ‘moving people’ and not vehicles – JANMARG ( Peoples Way)

BRT seen as a programme than a project- Opening up of Mill areas, economic

catalyst, recreational area connectivity, relocation of slum sites closer to BRT

currently around 40,000 slum houses built moved closer to BRT)

Network and not just corridors – Developing a complete network to connect

activity areas)

Socially Relevant Design- Making tradeoffs between the notion of what is right

against what is relevant ( Physical design and bus technology customising)

Flat Fares more reasonable- Rs. 2 for 2 km and min Rs. 5 for 5 Km. ( City dominated

by short trips and 70% of the passanger pay Rs. 5)

Extensive Public Outreach – Trial Runs, media support

Janmarg : Key Innovations

Page 4: Inclusive Aspects of Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System

Planning for the BRT, Ahmedabad Criteria for Route selection

Connectivity of important origin and destinations

Existing bus patronage and pattern of movement

Catalyst for area development - low income, low accessibility zones (old walled city)

Availability of right of way to build infrastructure

Formation of strong network for flexible route operations

Overall impact of transit on city

Connect ‘busy places’ but avoid ‘busy roads’
