Italy and Yemen
Including Women’s Rights in the Constitution
and Asserting Them in Yemeni Society
Seminar organized byMINERVA and LAW INTERNATIONAL
24th and 25st April 2014Sana’a - Yemen
With the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The project “Including Women’s Rights in the Constitution and Asserting Them in Yemeni Society”, organized byMinerva and Law International with the support of the General Direction for Political Affairs and Security of theItalian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, intends to create opportunities for dialogue and knowledge exchange betweenItaly and Yemen, within the framework of a collaboration aimed at identifying the legal instruments which, at thecurrent stage of Yemen’s state-building process, can best promote: (i) social and legal equality between men andwomen; (ii) the full participation of Yemeni women in the economic, social and democratic life of their country; (iii)the end of all forms of violence and discrimination; and (iv) the assumption of leadership roles by women. Theproject is based on a comparative approach that examines the condition of women in Yemen, Italy and Europe. Itsunderlying premise is the conviction that a country’s constitution, rather than establishing only a general principleof equality, must address gender equality specifically, and in such a way so as to guarantee that it is translated intoconcrete rights and implemented through laws and regulations.
