Music at Oxford University has along and distinguished history.

We offer a wide-ranging undergraduate and

postgraduate education in music, with

possibilities for specialising in performance and

composition among many other options. We also

play an important part in enriching the cultural

life of the wider University and the community at

large, and house the internationally important

Bate Collection of Musical Instruments.

But Oxford has to shape its future in a world of

unprecedented change. The challenge is

considerable, and we need help with the

investment required to secure the future for the

next generation, and many more to come. No

institution can survive and prosper over more

than 800 years without being adaptable.

The Faculty of Music is seeking funding for artist

residencies, concerts and masterclasses, student

chamber music ensembles, performance tuition,

conducting, and scholarships. We want to secure

the future of academic posts with endowments,

and provide scholarships for the highly qualified

graduates who apply to study here. We are also

ambitious in our aim to move to new, purpose-

built premises providing the space and facilities –

including performance, practice, and research

facilities – that will benefit future generations.

Please help us to realise those ambitions in

whatever way you can.

To make a gift, please visit

www.giving.ox.ac.uk/music

You can make a regular gift by credit card or by

direct debit. A single gift can also be made by

credit card or by sending a cheque to the Faculty

of Music. You will be taken to our approved

payment provider for secure processing of

your gift.

designation, please contact the Humanities

Michaelmas termThursday 30 October (3rd week)Eliot Bates Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies at theUniversity of Birmingham

Village - Environment - Studio: “Doga için Çal”and the Cartographies of Modern TurkeyDoga için Çal, literally ‘play for nature’, is a video seriesfeaturing hundreds of amateur and professionalmusicians ostensibly playing or singing forenvironmentalism. This highly acclaimed, corporate-sponsored series quickly went viral after its initialsegment aired online in 2011. But the specific politicalvalences of the project are unclear, and in many regardsDoga için Çal, with its uncontroversial folksongrepertoire and absence of any ethnic language songs, isquite conservative. I argue that the series is perfectly‘natural’ with regards to Turkey's nearly ninety-yearhistory of state-driven national folklore projects. Ratherthan a radical departure, Doga için Çal serves to ‘re-map’ both Turkish nationalized folklore and the

practices and spaces of the recording studio onto the Turkish Republic and Turkish diaspora – and in doing soheralds the 'death of the village' and underscores the asymmetrical economic development of different regions. My talk uses these videos to explore the audible aspects of how maps and mapping practices come to makespace more sensible.

Thursday 27 November (7th week)Eleni Ikoniadou Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication atKingston University

The Virtual Dimension of SoundIn the age of computational media, sound and itssubcultures can offer dynamic ways of accounting forbodies, events, and their perceptions. Particularly in thelast decade, an emerging audio culture, crossing boththeory and the arts, echoes an attempt to resist thetyranny of ocularcentrism and enable the considerationof new modes of thought. This talk explores the tracesand potentialities prompted by the sonic and theengagement that it affords with the speculative andpotential aspects of the event. It proposes that a notionof rhythm detached from the idea of counting andregularity can unlock the virtual dimension of sound, coexisting with but not exhausted by what is actuallyheard, sensed, and consciously perceived.
