Osnica (1363 m a.s.l.)

Osnica hill is located in Krivánska Malá Fatra, South-East of Veľký Rozsutec mountain. As it is surroundedby more famous peaks, it is not frequently visited bytourists, which makes it an attractive choice for peoplewho enjoy silent places that are not too crowded bytourists. This grassy and splendid lookout peak offersbeautiful views of the surrounding Malá Fatra mountainrange, especially the already-mentioned Veľký Rozsutecmountain. You can reach Osnica by following the mar-ked hiking trails. The simplest way to get there is fromthe village of Párnica or from the Lučivná resort. tions that make it the most difficult route in Roháče.Tri Kopy is a favourite tourist destination during IndianSummer – a period of warm, dry weather occurring inAutumn, sometimes also called Mountain Summer. Animportant requirement for a nice trip is good weather, which is why a hike to Roháče in the months of June,July and the first half of August is not safe. Thunder-storms and sudden changes in the weather occur on adaily basis. However, if you decide to risk it, you shouldbe returning from the hike and be beneath the upperborder of the forest by noon at the latest. Losing trackof the trail in foggy weather and lightning are the causeof many tragedies in the Tatra Mountains each year. There are various start points for the ascent to Tri Kopyand Baníkov. Besides the Orava route, the Liptov routestarting in Žiarska dolina valley and continuing throughthe Smutné sedlo saddle – Tri Kopy – Baníkov and backto Žiarska dolina valley is also popular among tourists. This route is approximately 19.6km long and takesaround 9h 30min.

Route through the Krivánska Malá Fatra

The length of the route and the height difference arewhat makes this ridge hike difficult. The ascent to-wards the Chata pod Suchým chalet at the beginningof the route and the later ascent to Suchý are both verysteep. The section between Suchý and the Priehybsaddle is one of the most beautiful parts of the ridgehike in the Malá Fatra. Despite the technical difficultyof walking along a narrow path leading through rockyformations above steep slopes, the route has a lot tooffer to tourists. From Suchý to the upper ski lift station under the Sni-lovské sedlo saddle, the route continues throughmountain pastures, and the path leads through thickshrubbery only in a few places. Should you decide tostop at the Chata pod Chlebom chalet, you will needto complete a moderately steep descent towards thechalet. The route is easy to navigate and the mountai-nous sections have marker poles that make orientationeven easier. It is recommended to complete the ridgehike only if the weather conditions are good. It is re-commended to split the hike into two days and stayovernight at the Chata pod Suchým or Chata pod Chle-

Route to Biely Kríž from Klokočov

A non-challenging trail crossing the national borderbetween the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In Winter,a cross-country skiing trail runs along it towards LysáHora. It is possible to pay there in both Czech crownsand Euros. Biely Kríž saw its greatest glory after thewar when it became the centre of trade-union recrea-tional activities. Today it is the favourite place for Slo-vak and Czech tourists to meet. Do not miss theopportunity to visit the Chapel of St. Cyril and St. Met-hodius and an experimental ecological workplace, where they research the impact of the changing cli-mate and greenhouse gases on plants. Among otherthings, you will learn, for example, that it takes 36 localspruces to produce the amount of oxygen sufficient forone person per year. In Biely Kríž there is also a tripointof Silesia, Moravia, and Slovakia. Another interestingplace is Klokočovské rašeliniská included in the Sitesof Community Importance list, there are 12 such sites.

From the chalet continue along the pathfor another 3km until you reach the 38m-long Šútovowaterfall. It is the biggest waterfall in the Malá Fatraand one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Slo-vakia. It formed as a consequence of the mountain ran-ge’s rise and the Turiec Basin’s drop. The drops fallingdown to the ground create refreshing “showers”. Du-ring the Winter, the waterfall creates interesting deco-rations made of ice. In Šútovo valley you can take alook at the educational path leading alongside the Šú-tovo stream that ends at the waterfall. Gader Valley

Due to its location at the mouths of the Gader andBlatnica valleys of the Turiec Basin, the Turiec villageof Blatnica is an ideal choice for a trip to the Veľká Fat-ra’s most important valleys (from the tourists’ point ofview). Dedošová is the direct continuation of theGader Valley’s upper section. Together they are 18kmlong. The valley is canyon-like, with massive crags, rocky towers, and many other rock formations. Jánošík,the Slovak film, was filmed here in 1962, under theSokol crag. The attractiveness of the valley is enhanced by the pre-cious flora and rare animal species living there. Route to Tlstá and Ostrá

A difficult, challenging and long route with a steep as-cent. It is easy to navigate. It is necessary to be morecautious on the steep slopes during the rainy season.Similar to other hikes in the craggy area in the MaláFatra, this one also makes a particularly attractive andcharming trip choice. High rocky terraces and massivecrags tower from an altitude of about 700m and canbe seen from the Turiec Basin as well. Mažarná Cave, one of the largest caves of the Veľká Fatra, is locatedhere. The inside of Mažarná Cave is not available to thepublic; tourists, therefore, must satisfy themselveswith admiring its magnificent entrance portal. Tlstá(Fat) is named very aptly, as it is a large, spreadingmountain with a large meadow on top. Massive stonewalls and terraces sink into the depths of Konskýdol. Ostrá towers over them. Its peak offers oneof the most beautiful views of the Slovakmountains – the entire Turiec, Malá Fatraand the main ridge of Veľká Fatra can beseen. The ascent to Tlstá and Ostrá is se-cured with chains.

Route through Veľká Fatra

A moderate ridge hike along the most beautiful part ofthe Veľká Fatra. During this 2-day-hike you will reachfive peaks of the Veľká Fatra – Kráľova studňa, Krížna,Ostredok, Ploská, and Borišov. Its level of difficulty isdue to its length rather than its terrain. The ascentfrom Harmanec to the Kráľova studňa hotel takesabout 3h 30min. The trail leads along an asphalt roadand you can see waterfalls and cascades in the sur-rounding area. If you are a fan of sky observation, youcan combine usefulness with pleasure. In the vicinityof Kráľova studňa, there is the Veľká Fatra – Kráľovastudňa Dark-Sky Park with optimal conditions for as-tronomical sky observation. The altitude of the ridgehike from Krížna to Ploská is consistently above 1300m a.s.l. Only the initial ascent to the ridge is more diffi-cult. Chata pod Borišovom chalet is the perfect emer-gency shelter offering refreshments andaccommodation. The trail marking is mostly logical andunderstandable. The ridge hike through the Veľká Fatrais a popular route among tourists, mainly due to the factthat it leads through an unexpectedly varied mountainlandscape. The route leads through its shortest sectionbetween Borišovo and Krížna. Ascend from Borišovoto Havranovo and continue through the Belianska do-lina valley to the village of Belá-Dulice. The path can beenriched with a visit to the beautiful but small, multi-level Došná waterfall. You can reach it by following theYellow trail from Havranovo for about 25 min. It is re-commended to split the hike into two days and stayovernight at the Chata pod Borišovom chalet. If you
