George Del GobboMusic Director and Conductor Columbus Symphony Orchestra

T here has always been a feeling in our culture that everything (well, maybe most things) gets better with age. In

many cases this may be true: fine wine, cast iron skillets, cowboy boots, jeans, friendships, flannel sheets, cheese, slippers, investments (one hopes), trees, George Clooney (how I hate him), and balsamic vinegar. One could argue that all of the aforementioned things generally do improve, mellow, become more comfortable, as time passes. There is no argument, however, that the Columbus Symphony Orchestra belongs at the top of this list. With each passing season the orchestra just gets better and better. As a matter of fact I challenge you to name a city of our size (or even a much bigger one) that is home to a better orchestra.

Here’s a sample of what the CSO’s 2016-17 season offers: the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Strauss, Debussy, Prokofiev, Respighi, and many more, with guest appearances by pianists Claire Huangci and Gilles Vonsattel, violinist Mayuko Kamio, brilliant young organist Christopher Houlihan (who be rocking the Jordan Organ in Legacy Hall), and a Mozart Festival featuring the CSU Choral Union conducted by Constantina Tsolainou. If you prefer more popular music, there’s a concert of Academy Award winning film music and one celebrating American icons, everything from baseball and jazz to Martin Luther King, Jr.

So why not get off the couch, take the leap, and purchase some tickets. Discover what all of the fuss is about. I’ll be there and I’m getting older, too. (Hey, wait a minute.)

S S’mores(Saturday Mid-Day Orchestra Rehearsals in Bill Heard Theatre)

S’MORES are open dress rehearsals with an informal and all-inclusive atmosphere. The CSO is breaking the financial barrier by encouraging attendees to “pay what you want.” By allowing YOU to set the price, S’MORES eliminates hesitation and exposes people who have not had the capabilities to partake in the music that is being created here in Columbus. S’MORES begin at 12:30 PM and last the duration of a rehearsal (no later than 3:30 PM). For more information call 706.256.3640.

Know the ScoreOne hour prior to each classical concert in Studio Theatre, the CSO offers a casual pre-concert event called “Know the Score”. This thirty minute lecture/interview/discussion is led by Maestro Del Gobb and offers some insight into the repertoire on the evening’s concert as well as occasional visits from guest artists and other “persons of interest”. Admission is free to concert ticket holders and includes a complimentary glass of wine. (Mr. Del Gobbo believes he sounds a lot smarter and more charming when his audience is drinking wine.)

Mark your calendars with these S’MORES and Know the Score dates:September 17, 2016 October 15, 2016 October 22, 2016 November 19, 2016 January 28, 2017 March 18, 2017 April 22, 2017

The purpose of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is to bring beautiful music to the people of the Chattahoochee Valley. This is accomplished through both conventional (concerts in concert halls) and unconventional (education/outreach programs) ways. Your financial support of this work allows us to spread the joy of music into every corner of our community.

ART ATTACKS!A brass trio in the produce section of your local supermarket? A harpist in the lobby of a hospital? Encountering conventional music in unconventional places: this is what Art Attacks! are all about. The CSO plays the soundtrack of your life. Now you can expect to run into us as you go about your daily routine.

THE ORCHESTRA UP CLOSEThis program is designed to introduce young children to music through exposure to the instruments of the orchestra. Small ensembles of CSO musicians present hour-long programs to small groups of children, allowing for an “up close” intimacy that is not possible at larger concerts. The children have the opportunity to make observations, to ask questions, and most importantly, to touch and play the variety of instruments in the CSO “instrument petting zoo.” This program is available to schools throughout the region, and is presented to more than 6,000 children annually.

SYMPHONY UFrom musical scandals to flops and failures our very own “Professor” George Del Gobbo will give you an exciting behind the scenes look at some of the different and unusual topics surrounding classical music. “Professor” Del Gobbo will lead the class while you sip a glass of your favorite wine, munch on delicious hors d’oeuvres, and gain behind the scenes knowledge on the orchestra. There will be no homework or tests. That’s how we roll at “the U.”

COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS FOR STUDENTSEach season the Columbus Symphony Orchestra works with our partners in education to provide complimentary concert tickets to more than 1,000 children in schools throughout the Chattahoochee Valley. Capturing the attention and cultivating the interest of our youngest potential patrons is vital not only as an enrichment of their personal lives, but to the survival of our art. This would not be possible without your generous support.

MAKING MUSIC MATTERThe CSO and the Empowered Youth of Columbus have collaborated in teaching violin to young children at Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy and Dawson Elementary School while instilling in them the discipline, powers of concentration, and team work necessary to be successful not only in music but in life.
