and was recognized as “patient, kind, generous, and a wonderful role model for our children.” The Sisters shared memories of their days at Mount Carmel with
the students as a conclusion to this well-deserved celebration. Memories included those from sisters who were students at Mount Carmel as well as those who taught anywhere from the 1920’s to the present day. After the service the Sisters were
presented with a gift from the seventh grade students and joined the faculty and staff for a special luncheon prepared by the parents.

TOUCH IN
On May 31st sixteen Sisters of Notre Dame were guests of honor at the bi-annual Julie Day Mass held at Mount Carmel school. This year’s event was particularly special for the sisters and the faculty. The celebration focused on the gift of the Sisters of Notre Dame to the children of California— 150 years of education. Ginny Ploeser, Religion Coordinator, directed the children in the first performance of a new St. Julie song from England and also in the singing of “Ah, God is Good” in all seven major languages of the Sisters of Notre Dame congregation, including Swahili. The celebration, of course, could not be complete without the singing of the Mount Carmel school song. The surprise of the celebration was the presentations to two senior members of the faculty by Principal, Teresa Anthony. Ginny Ploeser, who is also an
Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame, was recognized for her 45 years of teaching in Catholic schools, nineteen of which have been spent at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Ginny’s letter of commendation highlighted how she continues to give “generously of her time,
i n c l u d i n g tutoring students in math before school each day.”
Bill Callas, Dean of Students and P.E. teacher, was honored for his gift of over 50 years of education, primarily to the children of Redwood City. He has been at Mount Carmel for sixteen years

Kindergarten Families Enjoy the First Science Night
Last May 23, thirty-two kindergarten families came to school “after hours” to participate in the first-ever Kindergarten Family Science Night. Parents, kindergartners and siblings of all ages used gravity to propel cars down an inclined track, created explosions by combining acids and bases, and generally created havoc -- all in the name of science.
The family activity, which drew 105 people, is the culmination of a year-long Kindergarten Science Enrichment program, “Kindergarten Physics,” which teaches kindergartners about concepts like gravity, magnetism, electricity, chemical reactions, forces, and waves. Taught in addition to the regular science curriculum, the program uses a combination of hands-on lab activities and exciting in-class demonstrations to help kindergartners develop an understanding of basic scientific ideas and enthusiasm for the material. On Family Science Night, families came to school ready to learn from their students. The students prepared all month to be teachers that night, and proudly lead their families from station to station, guiding the hands-on activities at each station and explaining the science behind them. Families competed to fly paper planes at one of the six stations, and performed “plays” about magnetism at another. Volunteer scientists -- graduate students from Stanford University and classroom teachers -- facilitated learning at each center. “Kindergarten Physics” is a collaboration between kindergarten teacher Colleen O’Mahony and her husband Frank, an electrical engineer and doctoral candidate at Stanford University. The program is in its third year. In addition to Kindergarten Science Night, other year-end science events included a class trip to the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose and the annual Mt. Carmel Kindergarten rocket launching, where students use all of the scientific concepts they’ve learned during the year to help launch a pressure rocket.
During the Spring semester we completed the last phase of the WASC accreditation process when we received a three-day visit from a team of principals and teachers from public and parochial schools. At the conclusion of their visit we received a report that was very positive and validated our school’s strengths, especially in the areas of a comprehensive, challenging, and relevant curriculum, excellent parent participation, extensive support services for students, a comprehensive and well-lived philosophy and Student Learning Expectations. In addition to recognizing our strengths, the committee also affirmed our identified areas of development and growth as we move forward for the next few years. We will explore the feasibility of a school-wide systematic writing program and expanding the science program including exploring space for a science lab, and a teacher to specialize in science for more grades than at present.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Launches Website PAGE 3
Sometimes it takes the right combination of enthusiasm and talent to bring a project to completion. This is certainly the case with the Mount Carmel website. When Scott Johnson, class of 1992, returned home after graduation he contacted Principal Teresa Anthony about using his newly acquired skills as a Webmaster to create a website for the school. After discussion with the staff, administration and the school board it was decided to create a parish website encompassing the school and other ministries of the parish. John Avilla, a new parent at the time, agreed to use his professional talents to chair an Internet Initiative Committee. He was joined by parents Steve Schiel, a graphic designer, Greg Botto, who offered to host the site and Lynn Periera Felise, 1978 who works in web marketing. Marti Engh and Maureen Buck, members of the Parish Council joined Fr. Dave Ghiorso, Julia Tollafield and parishioner Dolores Hodges, a member of the School Board, to complete the committee. We had the right combination of enthusiasm and talent. After many months of planning and numerous hours of work by Scott Johnson and the other professionals of the group we have a site of which we can truly be proud. Please take time to look at the site at www.mountcarmel.org. You can read archival copies of the In Touch newsletter, see old school photos and photos from the recently published book on the stained glass windows of the church. Please use the site to communicate with us, see details of forthcoming reunions and events at the school and learn more about who we are today. Future plans involve adding classroom notes, copies of weekly announcements, a current calendar of events and regular communication by email for those who are interested. Do let us know what you would like to see on the site and we’ll try and include it in our development plan. Our thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers formed by members of the Mount Carmel family; our parents, our alumni and our parishioners.

We all have to shop; weekly trips to the supermarket, meals out, new clothes and furnishings and all those birthday and Christmas gifts. In the last few years we have seen an increase in the number of ways that you can support education while you shop. We invite you to participate in the programs offered by these stores and companies that support our school. Our goal for the 2001/2002 school year is to raise $75,000 from the Scrip program alone. This is a reduction of $250 on the tuition for each child.

Fundraising — The Easy Way.
Scrip started over 10 years ago at Mount Carmel when we began purchasing gift certificates below their face value and selling them to parents and parishioners for full price realizing an average of 5% on each transaction. Today we continue to offer paper Scrip for both local and national stores and restaurants, while offering electronic options with eScrip and Schoolpop. With these changes we hope that we will receive support for our friends and alumni throughout the country. Target Stores give 1% of all purchases made with their in-store card. For further details go to www.target.com/schools or call 1-800-316-6142. Through the Box Tops for Education program we collect “box top” coupons from specially marked General Mills products. Each coupon brings 10 cents to our school. Campbells Labels for Education Program enables us to receive school supplies and equipment in exchange for labels from Campbells and Swansons food products. In previous years we have received books and videos for the library and equipment for our sports programs. If you wonder what to do with your used printer cartridges then join us in our recycling program sponsored by ETCEP. You can return your cartridges free of charge by contacting ETCEP at www.etcep.com or by leaving your cartridges at the school or church. We receive computer equipment in exchange for these cartridges.

On April 1st we welcomed members of the class of 1997 and their parents to a celebration at Mount Carmel. We joined together for 9:00am Mass and then had brunch in the Small Hall. Most of the class was able to attend and it was wonderful to see so many of the students and hear about their plans for the future. Graduates are planning to head for community college, to join the Marines and law enforcement. They have been accepted at UC Berkley, UC Davis, St. Mary’s, WestPoint San Diego State, Sonoma State, Chico, San Jose State, UC Santa Cruz and Cal Poly. The class of 1997 will be studying the sciences and the arts, psychology and photography. Many have not seen each other for years but it was as though they were never apart. They are heading in many different directions but they still remain close to their Our Lady of Mount Carmel family. We wish them good luck in all their future endeavors.
Bill Galvin, ’97, wrote: “Thank you so much for the breakfast reunion this last Sunday. It is very nice to be the big kids now! Everyone seems motivated, healthy and happy to move to the next level of their education. ….. We owe all our knowledge and direction from our early education at Mount Carmel.”

Class of 1997 Reunion
Alison Huber, Class of 1995 Dec. 4 1981 – July 20, 2001
I met Alison almost 10 years ago when she opened her heart and her home to my daughters when they first arrived in the USA. Rose, Ed, Alison and Kevin Huber welcomed us and made us part of their extended family. Alison gave us her friendship and filled our lives with laughter in the same way that she did for so many people, both young and old, during her lifetime. She was a beautiful, vibrant young woman who faced her illness with courage, grace, dignity, humor and faith. After graduating from Mount Carmel she
attended Notre Dame High School and became a member of the water polo and swim teams. She started her college career at St. Mary’s, Moraga, where she began playing lacrosse; once again forming strong friendships with teammates. In February 2000 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent chemotherapy, returning to school for her sophomore year. However, she was soon found to have acute myelogenous leukemia and began treatment at Stanford Hospital. At Stanford she became an inspiration to the staff and her fellow patients alike. She stayed positive and throughout her illness showed an amazing strength, always unselfishly worrying about the impact of her illness on her friends and family. At her funeral, her uncle Aiden Coburn said that he was sure that Alison would speak these words to us:
Afterglow I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one, I’d like to leave an afterglow, of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo, whispering softly through the ways, Of happy times, and laughing times
and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun Of happy memories that I leave
When life is done.
Alison has left hundreds of children, young people and adults with an afterglow and a sense of wonder at the strength and humor of this beautiful young woman.
