What a difference Council Planners have made to Grantham. After seeing the evidence of the changes through the presentation by Brian Buttery, our guest speaker at our recent meeting, historic buildings brushed aside to suit modern preferences. It was a delight to see some of the old shops with names some of us remembered, all the cinemas, four in fact, dotted around the town. Now we can look forward to, how many? And all in one building. There was Chambers, Woolworths, Tesco, the George Hotel, Whipples, the Little Dustpan. At least that sign is still visible, high up on the wall on Westgate. Brian's talk was sprinkled with anecdotes from his childhood growing up in the town. Sandra Quinsee thanked him saying that as a newcomer to the area she had found it fascinating to see how the town has changed to what it is today. It was great to see our Janet, back in the fold after such a long illness, as she was welcomed by everyone. Our President welcomed her and Helen's Mum too visiting us from Gonerby W.I.

Our business which followed refreshments served by an army of hostesses, consisted mainly of where we are going and what we will be doing when we get there. Tickets for the lunch at the Belton Golf Club where we are to hear a talk by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE of the R.A.F. Air Cadets. There were more tickets for the Kesteven Group of Institutes meeting when we learn

who made all the famous quilts of the world. We are manning the Bring and Buy stall hoping that we sell out and not wondering what to do with all the left-overs despite asking the donors to pick up what they brought ,if it hasn't sold. They just walk straight by with never a glance dashing to the car park. True. Members were signing up for the craft workshop at Navenby, entry forms for the Show at the same venue have been despatched and we are all busy stitching, knitting and baking. I just hope that I get my entries finished in time. The spirit is willing but the arthritic hands aren't so accommodating. Half a dozen of us told us about their trip to Long Bennington, firstly we had taken afternoon tea, and what a tea it was. They stumped us or should I say “stuffed us”? The sandwiches, tartlets, both sweet and savoury and the cakes and scones with all the trimmings were all delicious. What we couldn't manage were boxed up for us to take home. We visited the St. Swithun's church in the village and saw the W.W.1.Armistice exhibition. Every soldier from the village is commemorated and the waterfall of poppies worked by the women of the village is a fitting tribute to the fallen. Go see it, it's well worth a visit, It's open daily until four o'clock daily. We heard that subs are going up next year (they never go down do they?) Still good value though. Diaries and the Federation's book on wartime fare, some of the recipes look dodgy we thought, were distributed. We received updates on two resolutions passed at the Annual Meeting last year, Mental Health and Plastic Soup. But back to eating. We are to have lunch before seeing Calendar

Girls in October and there are still two tickets available for anyone in the village should they like to join us, transport is laid on and you don't even have to be a woman, gentlemen are very welcome. We chose our preferred meal from the menu which Madeleine had compiled for our Anniversary Lunch in November (I know it's early, but I bet there will be someone missing at the October meeting, as there was at this one). All this before Christmas, what the waistlines will be like by then, non-existent probably. Mary Cowley was congratulated for winning the W.I. Are Always There Quiz. No one had all the questions right and I didn't get many back for marking. Even if you didn't manage to complete it, it is always worth sending it in. Our Rose Bowl monthly competition was won by Helen Scorror with a very thin running duck, Peggy Taylor was second with a lovely model of a dog. Flower of the month winners were Kathy Atter and Peggy Taylor. Lynne sent a message that her dromedary had taken the hump and wouldn't come to the meeting.

Our next meeting is at the usual venue, the Sports and Social Club on October 16th at two o'clock. Our speaker will be Wendy Smith with a talk and a chance for us to have a go perhaps, at the Art of Oriental Knotting(at least I shall get a rest from knitting). Competition will be “a gold coloured item”. So if you would like a “crafty “afternoon off from the ironing why not join us? A warm welcome awaits you and of course tea and cake.

The word September translates as the 'seventh month' as it was on the old Roman calendar, but the earlier Anglo Saxon name was 'the harvest month'. This year's hot, dry summer meant poor vegetative growth but early ripening. Looking back to records 10-12 years ago, the pattern was of cool, wet summers but a harvest of colourful grassland fungi. This year, though we have finally had rain, they have not yet appeared. Berries ripened early and many flowering plants which ran to seed early are now re-growing and even flowering.

One impressive plant in flower, which likes our light, limey soils, is Great Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus). Its yellow flowers encircle a tall stem above large grey leaves covered in woolly

hairs. 'Verbascum' is Latin for 'beard' and 'thapsus is from the Greek island where it flourishes. A Lincoinshire name is 'Adam's flannel' but a more widely used name is 'Aaron's Rod' from the staff described as putting forth buds and breaking into flower. Naturalists in the past favoured names from fables and legends.

The bracket fungus 'Dryad's Saddle' found on an old horse chestnut stump, looks as if it could provide a seat for the spirit of the woods. Looking back over records for September 2006-2008 the butterflies noted are much the same. Red Admirals were firmly established as overwintering as opposed to just migratory species — alongside Small Tortoiseshell, Peacocks and Commas. Holly Blues had good second broods as they did this year. Small and Cabbage Whites were abundant. This year at a time when Brimstone butterflies are flying again, the day flying Brimstone Moth was photographed in a garden. The adult is attractive with pale orange markings on the yellow wing edges. Its caterpillar is dull brown with a hump on its back, imitating the stems of its food-plant shrubs. Also photographed a Vapourer moth caterpillar resplendent in red, black and yellow set off by cream coloured tufts of hairs. The adult male is almost plain brown and

the female is wingless. She often lays her eggs on the cocoon from which she has emerged. Humming Bird Hawk Moths are more frequently reported than a decade ago when the distinctive caterpillars of the Privet Hawk Moth were a regular feature. I have received no records this September. There were regular sightings of the Brown Hawker Dragonfly but not of the Southern Hawker which has been seen at ponds this year. Some avian features remain the same. 'Absence of small birds in gardens' ( worn out and moulting?). 'Collared doves still on eggs' (no mention of woodpigeons then). Buzzards circling on the thermals signalled the first successful rearing of a family locally. A Muntjak Deer was seen crossing the Al to the village in September 2006. They now breed even to the west of Colsterworth and Roe deer are a new phenomena. To Look For in October Any sightings of house martins and swallows before they leave. Storm Ali has brought us broken branches, but the seasonal leaf fall is where to look for plant galls and leaf miners. I look forward to all your records at:61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860465, e-mail jnostler@ hotmail.co.uk Jane Ostler

Colsterworth Nature TrailIt’s been a busy time for the hard working volunteers on the Nature Trail and we have achieved a lot in the last year. We continue to be well supported by the Parish Council and receive help and advice from a number of external agencies, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust for instance have offered a number of training days to the group and given us access to the nationally important Coronation Meadow at Red Hill to recover seeds for our own flower meadow, work on which is beginning to show some success. We even had our own ‘Poldark’ moment when the scythe came out which proved, if nothing else, why strimmers were invented and that none of us looked like Aidan Turner! You may have noticed that a considerable number of ash and blackthorn trees have been felled and a number of clearings created. This is partly to provide a variety of wildlife habitats, but also to make room for the several hundred native trees that the Woodland Trust have donated to us. Work to plant these will begin in the winter and they will greatly increase the bio-diversity of our tree species along the trail. Some of these will be planted alongside the now abandoned Colsterworth bypass which Lincolnshire Highways are kindly allowing us to develop as a village asset.Access to the bypass prompted a large litter pick and we recovered some 150 bags of rubbish from there and further west along the path. Strangely, this included a dozen or so matched pairs of shoes. Thankfully, all the rubbish was recovered from areas of the trail that had not been cleared before. Littering is not a serious issue along the path and our thanks go to the users for keeping it that way. Sadly the same cannot be said for the dog fouling which blights some areas of the path. Toxocariasis is a disease carried by dog faeces and is a condition to which children are particularly susceptible as they are

more likely to play in infected areas and less likely to wash their hands after soiling. It can lead to seizures and blindness. Children from Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe play freely along the nature Trail; let’s not poison them. Clean up after your dog. I encourage people to visit our Facebook page (Colsterworth Nature Trail) to see what we’ve been up to. One of the latest posts shows the installation of a new bench along the flower meadow. Our thanks go to Madeline and Dave at the White Lion, together with their customers, for purchasing it for us via the bonus ball. My personal thanks go to the volunteers themselves and particularly to Cliff and Clare for hosting our summer BBQ. It went really well and only one person ended up in A&E. Good result! Christmas party next! Thanks guys. Mo Taylor, Nature Trail Ranger

Local School converts to Academy stColsterworth Church of England Primary School converted to academy status on September 1 and joined The

Mul Academy Trust – Abbey Academies Trust (AAT). Colsterworth School is a mainstream Church of England Primary school in the village of Colsterworth, near Grantham and Bourne. Earlier this year AAT Chief Execuve, Sarah Moore, and Duncan Pickering, Co-Chair of Trustees, were invited to a meeng with the Department for Educaon in Sheffield who asked if AAT would consider taking a third church school into their Trust. The DfE felt, given the proximity as a Church Trust and their success in delivering school to school support, that they were best placed to welcome Colsterworth into the Abbey Academies Trust family.Following a period of Due Diligence, the Board of Trustees met to consider all of the informaon gathered and to make a final decision about the school's future. At this meeng, it was agreed that the school would convert to an

stAcademy as part of the AAT and the school has become part of the Trust from 1 September 2018. Lucy Gibson, Head Teacher said, “We are thrilled to have joined AAT, who above everything else, put its children first. We have been working with the Trust to secure the rapid improvements that the school needs the Trust ; have supported this at every level. As a school we can now connue our journey with renewed confidence ensuring that we provide the very best educaon for our children, an educaon that they richly deserve. We look forward to a bright future working in partnership with AAT and I am sure the school will go from strength to strength as a result.” Colsterworth joining AAT moves the number of schools within the Trust to 3: Bourne Abbey Church of England Primary Academy and Bourne Elsea Park Church of England Academy, Bourne. Sarah Moore, AAT Chief Execuve, added “This is an excing me ahead for our Trust as we work together to ,ensure our partnership will be hugely successful, improving the lives of the children at Colsterworth as a result.”For further informaon please contact Jill Bates on 01778 422163 or email [email protected]

Dog Owners. As a responsible dog owner or walker, it is your responsibility to keep your dog under control whilst in a public place and to clean up after it (amongst other responsibilities). Dog faeces can be easily picked up using a ‘pooper scooper’ and bag, then disposed of in a responsible manner. Our Community cleaners Kevin and Mark are responsible for emptying the dog waste bins. Please ENSURE that you use the appropriate “dog poo bags” and securely seal them. They are cheap to buy and designed for the job. Please do NOT improvise using empty bread packaging or similar light weight bags – they split, and you can imagine the result! Some councils have stricter rules on dog fouling. They may make owners carry a poop scoop and disposable bag when they take their dogs out to a public place. If you see a problem, you can report this on the South Kesteven District Council website: www.southkesteven.gov.uk Report It page. Or telephone 01476 406080. NATURE TRAIL - The village is very fortunate to have this great recreational facility for all to enjoy. It is however being spoilt by some inconsiderate dog owners who do not clear up after their dogs.

CLEAR IT UP PLEASE – THIS IS NOT A DOG TOILET!
