TONALIST RETIRED TO LANE'S ENDBy Evan Hammonds
November's off-the-table deal is on again: Robert
S. Evans' four-time grade I winner Tonalist has
been retired to Lane's End.
Lane's End previously obtained a share in the
4-year-old son of Tapit who counts the 2014 Belmont
Stakes and Cigar Mile (both gr. I) among six graded
wins, but the arrangement fell through last year.
"That first deal was made a year or so ago; that's
old news," Evans said Dec. 9. "I sold a quarter of him
to Lane's End and they let me out of the deal. I want-
ed to race him this year to prove he could run a mile,
not just a mile and a half, and we won two graded
races at a mile. Lane's End called after the Cigar Mile
and thought they could make it work."
Tonalist, who will stand for $40,000, joins top-end first-
year stallions Honor Code and Liam's Map at Lane's End.
"I was afraid they would soak up all the good
mares, but they said they are oversubscribed," Evans
said. "I plan on breeding 15-20 of my mares to him."

THROWBACK: FULL SISTERS AND THE STARLETBy Tom Hall
This week's Throwback Thursday is actually more
of a "Toss" than a "Throw." Los Alamitos' Starlet
Stakes is the only grade I race this weekend, and
some superstar juvenile fillies—champions Althea,
Outstandingly, and Take Charge Brandi—are among
the winners in the 34 previous editions.
In 2013 Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and Edward
McGhee's homebred Streaming, trained by Bob
Baffert, won the Starlet. This year they're back with
probable entrant Treasuring, second-place finisher in
Del Mar's Desi Arnaz Stakes in November.
By the late Smart Strike, the full sisters are from
the unraced Storm Cat mare Teeming, who has also
produced stakes winner Cascading (A.P. Indy) and
stakes-placed Distracting (Distorted Humor) and Gift-
ing (Street Cry), all fillies.
Teeming is a daughter of 2007 Kentucky Brood-
mare of the Year Better Than Honour. Dam of back-
to-back Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winners Jazil and Rags
to Riches, she is a daughter of Deputy Minister from
the internationally influential family of Best in Show,
1982's Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. BH
NYRA PROJECTS $118M IN VLT REVENUEBy Tom LaMarra
The New York Racing Association board of directors
is projecting $118.5 million in video lottery termi-
nal revenue for 2016, up 3.1% from $114.8 million
budgeted for this year and 0.3% more than the end-
of-year forecast for 2015, according to documents
included in a Dec. 9 board meeting packet.
Of the 2016 total, $61 million is for purses, includ-
ing stakes; $32.9 million for capital improvements at
Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga; and $24.6 million
for NYRA operations. NYRA said the projections,
which depend upon business at the Resorts World
Casino at Aqueduct, are based on 5,003 VLTs that
would produce an average daily win-per-machine of
$449 each.
NYRA said it has "significantly increased the
amount of money paid in purses for New York-bred
races" by 72% over three years. "The result of that
strategic utilization of funds is to have more horses
bred in New York, which creates more jobs in the
important New York agriculture and construction
sectors, as well as other industries."
On the capital improvement side, NTRA said it ex-
pects to have a balance of about $16 million heading
into 2016. BH

COULD 3D SCANNING LIMIT BREAKDOWNS?By Frank Angst
Sheila Lyons of the American College of Veterinary
Sports Medicine envisions a day when regulatory
veterinarians will use portable, equine 3D CT scan-
ners on standing horses in pre-race exams to com-
bat breakdowns.
Lyons, who made her presentation Dec. 9 at the
University of Arizona Symposium on Racing and
Gaming, held in Tucson, earned the audience award
($1,000) for her call for a study at three Thorough-
bred tracks where every horse would be scanned to
gather information and identify microfractures linked
to catastrophic breakdowns. Information from the
scans is produced in detailed 3D imagery.
"Microfractures are a ticking time bomb," Lyons
said, noting that regulatory vets may get only 10 min-
utes to evaluate a horse in a pre-race exam. She said
the $300,000 scanners would provide an invaluable
tool in improving those exams. "The time has come
to turn our collective wishes for making this sport as
safe as it can be into a reality."
The top award ($15,000) during the symposium's
Innovators' Circle session went to SwopStakes, a pro-
posed pari-mutuel wager that incorporates aspects
of exchange wagering. BH
GODOLPHIN COLT EYES GOLDEN SLIPPERBy Tara Madgwick
The first week of summer in Australia has seen
the emergence of two potential standouts on
opposite sides of the country, both by North Ameri-
can-bred shuttle sires.
Godolphin raced what it believes is its best 2-year-
old colt at Randwick in Sydney Dec. 5, and Astern
(Medaglia d'Oro) justified the opinion with an easy
win. Trained by John O'Shea, the handsome bay will
now have a short break before being prepared for
the group I Golden Slipper March 19, 2016.
A Darley homebred, Astern comes from a highly
successful Australian female family tracing to cham-
pion filly and five-time group I winner Triscay.
The major race run last weekend was the King-
ston Town Classic (Aus-I) in Perth, won by the un-
beaten 3-year-old filly Perfect Reflection (More
Than Ready)—now five-for-five, including a group III
victory. A homebred for prominent Western Australia
owner/breeders Bob and Sandra Peters, she fought
to the finish with another Peters homebred, Delicacy
(Al Maher), last season's Australian 3-year-old filly
champion. BH

INDUSTRYANALYSIS
STATUS QUO NOT HELPING HANDLE
There has been a flurry of activity this year
in the pari-mutuel business, but it hardly
qualifies as inspiring. What it has done is further
drive home the point that the industry doesn't
understand—or more likely doesn't want to
repair—its economic structure.
It has been a year of the "jackpot" bet,
guaranteed pools that are nothing more than
marketing stunts, and questionable claims of
reduced pari-mutuel takeout on said gimmick
wagers. Given that
total wagering on U.S.
races this year is on
par with 2014, the
strategy doesn't ap-
pear to be working.
Bettors who
understand
pari-mutuel racing
are quite vocal on
social media and
in blogs, and their
message is simple:
Horse racing's pric-
ing structure isn't
competitive with
many other forms
of gambling. They
admit state lotteries
are popular with the masses despite outrageous
rakes, but at the same time note that the lottery
model doesn't fit the pari-mutuel business.
There's a reason slot machines often pay
back 91% of money bet to customers, even
though the devices are jackpot-driven. It's called
churn. Casinos like nothing more than having
customers play slots for hours on end, and low
takeout allows that; a recent study indicated
when less money is returned to the customer,
slots play declines.
Pari-mutuel wagering is all about churn, and
the largest pools on average are the combined
straight bets—win, place, and show—and exac-
tas. They are also the wagers potential fans and
players can understand with minimal education.
They are ripe for lower takeout rates because
they offer the best opportunities for churn.
Why spend money on fan development
when you're in effect inviting people to partake
in a game with a flawed economic model? Why
not fix the model first and give people another
incentive to become involved?
Horse racing is a great game because it's a
sport, entertainment, and a cerebral exercise
for those who hand-
icap and wager. The
last-named aspect is
the foundation for the
revenue that supports
it, and protecting that
requires a compre-
hensive strategy, not
simply jackpot bets
that can drain the
bankroll of the aver-
age player.
Maintaining the
status quo amid
stagnation and dys-
function is a recipe
for eventual failure.
Such a scenario is
more likely when
there's a leadership vacuum at the top—that's
one of the biggest problems for horse racing
and perhaps other businesses for that matter.
But that's not likely to soon change.
The answer lies with racetracks and horse-
men's groups. One or two can't go it alone; the
few that have attempted substantial takeout
reductions have been shut out of the simulcast
marketplace. It's past time to sacrifice in the
short term by finding optimal rates that can
grow handle and sustain revenue.
