REA OPTS FOR OIL OVER HORSESBy Ron Mitchell

Nat Rea, the Canadian businessman who bought

his first Thoroughbreds after selling his multi-

billion- dollar auto parts company in 2012, is getting

out of the horse business in favor of the depressed

oil market.

"I have shifted all my business focus to oil," Rea

said in a Sept. 1 statement announcing his Regis

Farms would disperse 41 horses at the upcoming

Keeneland November sale. "I see great opportunity

in that business today. I'm passionate about both

industries and love the horses, but I can't devote my

time to both, so I had to make a choice."

As a result of Rea's emphasis on quality over

quantity in building his equine program, among the

horses to be offered without reserve by Three Chim-

neys are Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) runner-up

Shook Up; Canadian Horse of the Year and Canadian

Filly Triple Crown winner Sealy Hill; and Bijou, a half

sister to two grade I winners. BH

We began the Breed Secure program in 2012, and those who supportedstallions like Into Mischief, Temple

hottest young sires in North America. It puts breeders in a good position to

enter the market with a product that is likely to be in demand, and do so with

TX TRACKS LOSING $750,000 PER DAYBy Eric Mitchell

The current shutdown of Texas racing over a

budget dispute tied to historical race wager-

ing at the racetracks is costing the state about

$750,000 per day in live and simulcast handle,

while Texas horsemen will lose about $350,000 per

week in purse money generated by handle.

The Texas Racing Commission has no cash for

operations, which in turn forced the shutdown of

all racing statewide. Tracks can't operate because

the TRC must supply stewards, veterinarians, and

oversight; lawmakers were unable to come to an

agreement on funding Aug. 31.

"The legislature did not intend this result, which

will now shutter Texas racing facilities, putting

thousands of jobs at risk," said Andrea Young,

president of Sam Houston Race Park. "We believe

that this result is irresponsible. We urge the lieu-

tenant governor to stand up for 36,000 jobs now

before this goes any further." BH

GLENEAGLES, 'PHAROAH' MATCHUP IN WORKSBy Ron Mitchell

The announcement by trainer Aidan O'Brien

that four-time grade I winner Gleneagles will

be pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I)

sets up a possible Oct. 31 showdown at Keeneland

between two classic winners—and they both have

Coolmore ties.

The Classic has also been on the schedule for

American Triple Crown winner American Pharoah,

who finished second to Keen Ice in the Aug. 29

Travers Stakes (gr. I) for owner Zayat Stables and

will stand at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky

upon his retirement from racing. Owned by the

Coolmore Stud connections of Michael Tabor, Mrs.

John Magnier, and Derrick Smith, Gleneagles has

won four group I stakes, including the English and

Irish Two Thousand Guineas, both classics.

The Breeders' Cup would be the first dirt start

for the Galileo colt, who does not do well on soft

or yielding turf courses. O'Brien said the colt will

prep for the Classic in one of two upcoming races

in England. BH

NYRA ANTES UP ON AFTERCAREBy Teresa Genaro

It's no surprise that funding, or the lack thereof,

shadowed the proceedings during a Sept. 1 summit

on racehorse aftercare programs and related initia-

tives. So it was seen as refreshing by attendees and

panelists when the New York Racing Association an-

nounced it will donate $5 per start at its three tracks

to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which ac-

credits racehorse retirement and re-homing facilities.

The New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association

already does so.

"We are all responsible for these horses when

they leave the racetrack," said Martin Panza, NYRA

senior vice president of racing operations. "Whether

it is veterinarians, owners, or trainers, we need to

work together as a group and a community."

The summit, presented by the New York State

Gaming Commission, stemmed from a lengthy task

force report in 2011. The summit also addressed the

need for education of owners on preparing for race-

horse retirement before a horse is purchased, and

the programs created or supplemented by horse-

men's groups at various racetracks. BH

FINK AMAZED WISE DAN IS BACKBy Claire Novak

Morton Fink has one horse left to run. Plagued

by illness, the 85-year-old owner pared his

Thoroughbred holdings to a few broodmares and a

chestnut gelding, but that one—two-time Horse of

the Year Wise Dan—will surely do for any man's one-

horse string.

Wise Dan, who is trained by Charlie LoPresti and

breezed five furlongs in 1:00 Sept. 1 at Keeneland,

will be Fink's first 2015 starter in the Sept. 13 Wood-

bine Mile (gr. IT), a race he won in 2012-13. Asked

whether he thought his 8-year-old would race again

after last October's fracture, Fink's chuckle was wry.

"I never dreamed he'd come back but didn't want

to let myself think about that and be disappointed,"

he said. "You think, 'How many times can he come

back?' And he does, and it's just amazing.

"The race is a good race for a horse to be out as

long as he has been and come back in a grade I. I

think we're expecting a lot, but I trust Charlie com-

pletely. He wouldn't be running him if he wasn't

100%." BHAN

CHAMP'S TRAVERS FIGURE DOWN A BITBy Frank Angst

American Pharoah earned an Equibase Speed Figure

two points lower than his previous two efforts when

second in the Travers Stakes (gr. I), a race with enough

quality to take advantage of that slight regression.

American Pharoah earned a 110 in the Travers—

not dramatically lower than what he has been

running this season—but the lowest figure he has

earned since his Arkansas Derby (gr. I) victory (107).

His Triple Crown sweep saw the consistent Pioneerof

the Nile colt go 111-111-112 through the classics. He

registered another 112 in winning the Haskell Invita-

tional Stakes (gr. I) in his post-Triple Crown return.

Keen Ice most assuredly is improving. His Travers

111 marked the fifth straight race the son of Curlin

has improved his speed figure.

The week's top three speed figures came in the

Sword Dancer Stakes (gr. IT) while the top number on

dirt was turned in by classic-placed Social Inclusion

(123) in winning an allowance optional claiming race

at Parx Racing. BH

SOUTH AFRICAN RACE TO HAVE RECORD PURSEBy Sarah Whitelaw

South Africa has a new richest race: the 2016

grade I President's Champion Challenge, a

10-furlong event that will be run for a purse of R4

million (about US$300,000), which will make it the

richest in Africa. Wylie Hall won last year's Chal-

lenge, which was worth R2 million.

Drakenstein Stud's resident sire Duke of Mar-

malade, whose progeny have won three European

classics in 2015, was recently represented by his first

South African-born foal when grade III winner Valdiv-

ia (Var) produced a colt for breeder Ridgemont Stud.

Racing Post Trophy (Eng-I) winner Kingsbarns, a

son of champion sire Galileo, is another former Cool-

more resident joining the Drakenstein Stud stallion

ranks, where he will stand alongside Duke of Marma-

lade, Philanthropist, Trippi, and What a Winter.

Other local sires off the mark with their first foals

include grade I winners Jackson, Pomodoro, and

Potala Palace, as well as grade II winner Noble Tune,

the Unbridled's Song half brother to Honor Code. BH

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, Ph.D.

TAPIT-LIKE NUMBERS FOR INTO MISCHIEF?

If a breeder wants to breed the best, I contend

that the most important criterion for stallion

selection should be percentage of graded stakes

winners. For an example, consider the stallions

Into Mischief and Tapit. Based on percentage of

GSWs, Tapit apparently outclasses Into Mischief.

But, let's dig deeper.

Below are metrics I start with when evaluat-

ing stallions.

Twenty-five percent of Into Mischief's

horses of racing age are 2-year-olds of 2015.

Tapit's comparable percentage is 12.5%. Be-

cause 2-year-olds have fewer opportunities to

win stakes, Into Mischief's numbers suffer in

comparison to those of middle-aged stallions.

I address this bias by omitting the records of

current 2-year-olds and then recalculating the

percentages of SWs and GSWs. Adjusted per-

centages of GSWs become 3.6% for Into Mis-

chief and 5.2% for Tapit.

But note that Into Mischief's AEI is above

while his CI is below comparable figures for

Tapit. My research shows that AEI will increase

by about 16% if the average commercial stal-

lion is bred to mares with CIs one point higher.

I calculate "standardized" AEI based on this

relationship and estimate 3.20 as Into Mischief's

standardized AEI.

Regression analyses reveal that stallions

bred to mares with CIs equal to Into Mischief's

standardized AEI of 3.20 normally produce

approximately 4.2% GSWs from horses of racing

age. This 4.2% figure gives us a clue as to what

Into Mischief might be capable of when bred to

better mares.

An alternative approach to adjusting Into Mis-

chief's projected percentages of GSWs is to add

the normal difference in percentage of GSWs

when comparing stallions with CIs of 1.32 (Into

Mischief's CI) to those of stallions with the 3.20

"standardized" AEI projected for Into Mischief.

That adjustment suggests a future improvement

of 2.7% to Into Mischief's percentage of GSWs

from horses of racing age if he is bred to 3.20 CI

mares.

Using these estimates generates the project-

ed figures below, showing Into Mischief with

Tapit-like numbers.

Keep in mind, however, a "morning glory"

status often applies to stallions like Into Mischief

who are just getting out of the blocks. Many of

them are like the fellow who flips heads nine out

of 10 times only to find that he can't repeat that

feat. In 2016 Into Mischief's 157 foals of 2014

will almost inevitably pull his numbers down as

they are typically calculated. A more appropriate

measure of his success will be how those foals

run a year later. BH
