WEDNESDAYS DURING LENT
5:15 p.m. Soup Supper
6:30 p.m. Worship
Trinity Lutheran Church’s Lenten Mid-Week
Worship begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1,
with Worship at noon and 6:30 p.m. The
service will include the Imposition of Ashes
and the Lord’s Supper.
The Committees of Trinity are cooperating to
host soup suppers before each service
beginning March 1, at 5:15 p.m. Be sure to
attend and bring a
friend!
PASTOR’S COLUMN
Ash Wednesday and Lent are upon us. One of the things I
have given up for Lent this year are many of my cherished
books. If you look in my office now, you can actually see
the floor and the walls. The canyon of boxes has been
emptied or moved to home storage. Drop by to take a peak.
Before I speak about our Lenten commemorations, I want
to offer a profound word of thanks to the congregation for
the magnificent service of pastoral installation. The music
on February 19 was lovely in so many ways. Thanks to all
the choirs and instrumentalists that made it such a splendid
morning. The Bishop’s message was meaningful to me and
to so many. We certainly showed the Bishop the best side
of Trinity. The luncheon following the service was also
extraordinary. Carol joins me in saying thanks to all of you
who participated and especially to the gracious group that
made chicken for us all. We were deeply moved and highly
honored by this great event.
Our Lenten theme has to do with the many moods of God. I
am grateful to Pastor Martin Lieber who suggested the
theme. He will participate in one of the Wednesday
services. Todd Lewis will also speak on two of the
evenings. Together we will look at what it means:
When God is Silent (Ash Wednesday, March 1)
When God Mourns (March 8)
When God Rejoices (March 15)
When God is Angry (March 22)
When God Laughs (March 29)
When God Blesses (April 5)
When God Serves (Maundy Thursday, April 13)
When God Forsakes (Good Friday, April 14)
Remember that we have soup suppers before our
Wednesday evening services. Supper is at 5:15 p.m. and
worship is at 6:30 p.m.
Please join us both on Sundays and Wednesdays during this
season as we consider how to understand the many natures
of God.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
I’d like to extend special thanks to the outgoing members of
our committees and Council, as well as those who are
continuing to work in their committees. The work of the
Church, and missions we work on are not possible without
the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time toward
keeping things moving. We have already set a course for
great things in 2017, and I can’t wait to see some of them
unfold.
With a very nice installation Sunday behind us, I think the
entire congregation would like to extend our excitement and
thanks to have Pastor Clay with us, and thank the call
committee for their hard work in getting us here. There are
exciting times ahead!
Finally, thank you for showing the confidence to allow me
to serve as the Church President this year, and thanks to
Kathy Trachte for filling the first ever “Past President” role.
It will help us keep continuity in church leadership. With the
help of our new Pastor, great staff, and a congregation
dedicated to the mission of our church, we’re going to have
a great year.
Peace,
Joel Lemke

Did You Know?
You must call or log-on EACH YEAR to direct your
Thrivent Choice® dollars to support Trinity or other
charities.
Join us on Sunday, March 12, during Middle Hour in
Fellowship Hall. We ask that Thrivent members and anyone
interested in learning more information about the Thrivent
Choice® program attend.
In the past year we received $6,783.00 from Thrivent
Choice® to help our budget. That’s great, but it is less than
half of what Trinity received just two years ago!
Perhaps some people who signed up two years ago didn’t
know they needed to direct their Thrivent Choice® dollars
to Trinity each year or it goes unused.
With Thrivent Choice®, you can recommend where some
of Thrivent Financial's charitable outreach funds go. Since
2010, more than $325 million has been distributed to
churches and nonprofits nationwide.
You can direct your dollars by calling your Thrivent
Financial representative or by following the link on the
Trinity website at http://www.trinitysp.com/give/ .
Thrivent Choice® dollars for 2016 can still be directed until
March 31, 2017.
TRINITY IS HAVING A RADICAL ROOF RALLY! REASON: We need to replace the North, West and Sanctuary roofs.
The North and West roofs have been in place for 30 years. The corners of the shingles are starting to curl and there are diagonal cracks in the shingles.
The Sanctuary roof has been in place for 26 years. This rubber is showing age deterioration with cracks and buckling. It is also beyond recoating. We will need to make repairs to this roof yearly.
These replacements will help prevent costly interior water damage to our building.
NEED: A total of $62,000.00
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Join the Rally with a donation by using the Radical Roof Rally envelopes in the Narthex or just designate your donation for the “Roof Needs” in a pew envelope or plain envelope.
TRINITY WEBSITE
The new Trinity website has gone live. A screen shot is
shown below. Use the same web address
www.trinitysp.com and check us out. We hope members
find it both convenient and user-friendly. Our goal is to also
make this a welcoming site for friends in our community
who may be looking for a church home. It will continually
be updated with current news and events. We thank those
who have contributed suggestions and supported our
efforts.

Wednesday evening services and contribute to a visual

it!

SUNDAY SCHOOL
This time of year we are getting very tired of the winter,
cold and snow. It makes sense that we would remember
Lent during this time. The children will begin to learn about
Lent and what it means to us all. As they do this, they will
hear stories and lessons from Paul. Paul was a great leader
and a very good example of sharing the Good News of
Jesus with others. We hope that all of God's children can
share the news and be excited about what Jesus has done for
us all, just as Paul was.
The Christian Education Committee is also currently
looking for a few more individuals to join our committee
and help us to plan and grow our education programs here
at Trinity. Teaching is not a requirement, just a desire to
encourage all of God's children to learn from and to listen to
Him. If you are interested, please contact DeeAnn Donahue:
Christian Education Committee
Synod Youth Board
Congratulations go out to Trinity junior Reid Larson, who
at the recent East Central Synod of Wisconsin Junior High
Youth Gathering, February 18th-19th in Appleton was
elected by his peers as Synod Youth Board President for
the upcoming year. He succeeds Trinity's own Allison
Hagen who has now ended her 3 years of dedicated service
to the board, the most recent as President. The Synod
Youth Board is comprised of youth and adults responsible
for developing and carrying out both the annual Junior and
Senior High Youth Gatherings. Trinity freshman Maddie
Benser also serves as an elected member of that group. Be
sure to congratulate Reid and thank Allison and Maddie for
the incredibly positive ways they have always represented
Trinity!
Need Tech Assistance?
Several Trinity youth will be available from 4:30-6:30 PM
on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month (this month’s
dates are March 7th and 21st) in the narthex to offer their
unique expertise to congregation members who might need
a technology assist. We’re calling ourselves, “Trinity Tech
Translators.” Want help setting up an email or social media
account? Having cell phone issues? Need to transfer those
photos somewhere or create a PowerPoint? We can’t
guarantee we will have the answer, but our knowledgeable
volunteers will do their best to be a great resource for your
particular situation. Please contact Todd via phone or email
to schedule a visit or stop down when it’s most convenient.
Upcoming Important Dates:
March 19: No Sunday School - Spring Break
April 9: Palm Parade (Everyone is welcome to participate!)
April 16: No Sunday School - Easter

GROCERY DONATIONS
Our March grocery donations will go to the Salvation
Army. Most of the donations this month will go to feed the
residents who are staying at the Hope Center, and to equip
the kitchen. Items needed include: napkins, dish soap, 8 oz.
plastic cups for milk, oil, plastic wrap, gallon zip-lock bags,
juice, oatmeal, coffee, pancake mix and picnic sized salt
and pepper shakers (to place on the tables where the
residents eat).
If you prefer to make a cash donation they would really
appreciate money to purchase the small individual
containers of yogurt. Residents prefer this for breakfast
rather than the high sugar cereals.
During Lent pray for the residents at the Hope Center as
they struggle to put their lives back together. And challenge
yourself to pick up one grocery item each time you go to
the grocery store. Thank you for caring for your brothers
and sisters at the Hope Center.
Janet Swiston for Global/Local
Outreach Committee
2016—2017 SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship applications are available in the church office.
Ottem and Rasmussen forms must be returned by April 30.
To qualify for the Ottem, you must be a Trinity member
attending a Lutheran college or seminary full time. For the
Rasmussen, you must be a full time student at a public or
private college or technical college,
and a member of Trinity.
Endowment & Memorial Gifts
LENTEN COIN FOLDERS
By now you should have received your Lenten Coin
Offering Folder in the mail. For many years Trinity
members have generously responded to the needs of our
friends and neighbors both close to home and beyond.
Lent is a time when we reflect on the power of God’s self-
giving love that transforms and challenges us! During this
500th anniversary of the Reformation we are reminded that
the connections between faith, worship and justice were
central teachings of Martin Luther. His concern for the poor
and sharp rebuke of economic injustice helps us see the
many ways our faith calls us to strive for fairness in our
world.
Half of your Lenten coin offering will benefit Crossways
Camping Ministries, which operates three outdoor ministry
sites in Wisconsin. Our gifts will be used to purchase new
mattresses for cabins and new tents for the outdoor
recreation ministry. Crossways Camping facilities will be
ready for hundreds of excited campers this coming year
thanks to your generosity.
Students have difficulties learning when they are hungry.
While K – 12 students in the Stevens Point Schools can eat
hot lunches at school during the week, many students go
hungry on the weekends. Half of our offerings will provide
money to expand a Weekend Backpack Nutrition Program
in the Stevens Point School District. Our donations will
fund backpacks and food for needy students in all of our
public schools.
God calls us to minister to our brothers and sisters through
the gifts He has given us. Let’s share what has been
entrusted to us by placing a quarter in one slot every day
during Lent. Please return the coin folders to the church by
Easter Sunday, April 16.
Thank you for your generosity.
SPARE A DIME
The March Spare A Dime offering will go to help support
the Community Warming Center. In spite of our warm
weather in February, our Wisconsin winter is not over yet.
The Community Warming Center provides a warm place
for the homeless to spend the night during cold and snow-
ing weather. The Warming Center is currently housed in
the Episcopal Church, with administrative details handled
by the Evergreen Community Initiative which operates
out of the former Baptist Church on Church Street.
Nightly attendance at the Center usually runs from 10 to
the limit of 12. Since it opened in November, they have
served 37 different people who otherwise would have had
to spend the night out in the cold.
Thanks to Yuletide offerings they currently are not in
need of “stuff.” But there is a Stevens Point City require-
ment that a trained staff member be on duty every night.
This is a paid position, although it pays even less than
minimum wage.
Our Spare A Dime offering for March will go
to help with the funding for the required staff
to keep the Community Warming Center
open.

Tomorrow River Conference
Spring Event
“Sisters Helping Others”
Saturday, March 18, 2017
8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The event begins at 8:00 with registration and coffee in the
narthex. The program will begin with a presentation by the
Northern Gateway Chorus at 8:30. The theme of this year’s
event is Sisters Helping Others and our program will be on
Human Trafficking Awareness, presented by
Psychotherapist, Peggy Greco, MS, MSE, LPC, NCC and
Psychiatrist, Jolene Nowak, MS, LPC. She is the Clinical
Director at Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Consultants.
The cost is $15.00 and includes coffee and lunch. If you
can assist with the lunch, please see the display in the
narthex for information.
One-half of the offering collected will be sent to the Office
of Women of the ELCA and one-half will be donated to the
Women’s Crisis Center in Stevens Point. We also suggest
that each attendee bring a gift from the following list which
will go to the Women’s Crisis Center: laundry detergent
and dryer sheets, basic cleaning supplies, disinfecting
wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissues, diapers, and
gift cards from local grocery stores.
Please join us to learn more about the tragedy of Human
Trafficking and what we, as women, need to know. We all
can be doing more to end trafficking. We should rededicate
ourselves to building a future where perpetrators are
brought to justice, and no one is exploited and denied their
human rights.
All women are invited and encouraged to attend. Checks
should be made payable to TLCW. Call the church office at
715-344-2869 for more information.
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
Friday, March 3, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Holy Spirit Church
838 Fremont Street, Stevens Point
Friday, March 3, is World Day of Prayer 2017, held at Holy
Spirit Church in Stevens Point. World Day of Prayer is an
ecumenical celebration of informed prayer and prayerful
action.
The host country for World Day of Prayer 2017 is the
Philippines. The women of the Philippines call us to
explore concepts of economic justice in both the
Philippines’ context and around the world and our response
in light of God’s generosity. (Matthew 20: 1–16).
Trinity Quilt Makers
Our quilting ladies were very happy to welcome Pastor
Clay. He stopped by to meet the group and see first hand
what our project entails. He showed us his quilting skills by
tying a few square knots as you can see by the picture.
In the group picture you will see Bea Berg, Lois Hagen,
Rachel Favor, Margaret Pitzrick, Shari Willer, Judy
Pesanka, Pastor Clay, Linda Woerpel-Radoll, Barb
Krueger, Judy Lerand, Leanna Rusch, Diane Beversdorf,
Frieda Pawlitzke, Sandy Orgish, Jane Gjevre and Jane
Goudreau.
Lent is coming up with Ash Wednesday on March 1. For
the last few years we have had two quilts set up in
Fellowship Hall for people to tie before and after the soup
suppers. It’s meant to show how the quilting project works
and give you an opportunity to help out in a small way.
Everyone is welcome; the youth have been a part of this too
and we enjoy their help.
We have two work days in March. They are Tuesday,
March 14th and Thursday, March 23rd from 9-3 in
Fellowship Hall. Coffee, tea and treats are served mid-
morning. Come and join us, you’ll enjoy our fun group. If
you can tie your shoes, you can tie a quilt.

TRINITY LIBRARY
The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the
Reformation. To commemorate this anniversary, the Trinity
Library is highlighting two books on Martin Luther.
"Martin Luther: A Life" by James A. Nestingen (920 Lut) is
a well-written description of Martin Luther and the events
that led to the Reformation.
Also, "The Forgotten Luther," edited by Carter Lindberg
and Paul Wee (261.8 Lin), is a challenging read of Luther's
texts regarding socio-economic justice. One can't help
wondering while reading about Luther's protestations on the
greed and avarice of the times, if things have changed
much.
We also now have "From the Good Mountain," by James
Rumford (Pri Rum), which is a beautifully illustrated book
for all ages describing the evolution of the printing press,
and how Johannes Gutenberg changed the world with his
contribution of the printed book.
Thank you to Todd Lewis, Charlie McKee, Janet Swiston,
Pam Enerson, and Pastor Clay for their book donations to
the library.

WEDNESDAYS DURING LENT

6:30 p.m. Worship

Ashes and the Lord’s Supper.
Beginning Wednesday, March 8, we will continue our Mid-
Week Lenten worship at 6:30 p.m. each week. The

sure to attend and bring a friend!
Altar Guild Scheduling
Coordinator Needed
Trinity and the Worship Committee need your help. Many
volunteers contribute to our worship services, and we are
grateful for that. Currently, we need a volunteer to help
“behind the scenes” by performing scheduling coordination
of Altar Guild volunteers. I have filled in for this role for
the last several months, but my work schedule and other
roles at Trinity do not allow me to continue. The Altar
Guild Scheduling Coordinator oversees the sign-up
schedule for volunteers who set up and take down the
communion bread and wine for our services. This position
is critical since we offer communion at all of our services.
The position is available immediately, and training is
provided. The position could be shared by more than one
volunteer. Please contact me or the church office to sign up
for this important role. Thank you.
