What are you studying or where do you work?

I am working at the Illinois State Geological Survey, and studying at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the USA.

How did you become interested in the geosciences?

I wan’t planning on being a geologist. I was planning on being a doctor until I took a hydrogeology class on a whim and liked the dry humor of the professor. I continued tak-ing classes in geology and found that geologists are fun people to be around. What really hooked me was geologic mapping and field geology, and so that’s how I got into the career.

What year are you in school and what are you studying? What do you do in your job?

I am getting a Master’s degree in geology while working at the Illinois State Geological Survey. My work is all about understanding the distribution of rock formatinos at and beneath the surface. To convey this idea to the publi, I make geologic maps. To do this, I plan a field season, do the field work, and compile hundreds of fieldnotes. I also rely on well logs, drill cuttings, and core samples o gather more data points. Finally, I draft a map that shouws the distribution of rock formations at the surfcae and beneath the surface.

How is what you do for work rel-evant to society?

My job is to study the rock formations and show how they are distributed over a detailed area (129 square km). These maps are available to the public for a low

cost ($8 USD) and are used by mining, oil, and coal companies for exploration; by land developers and insurance companies to understand the risk of geo-logic hazards in the area; and by private landowners to evaluate the value of their land.

What activities are you involved in with the YES Network and/or what YES Network activities would you like to become more involved with?

I am currently serving as the YES Network’s UDA National Representative, for which I try to get people involved in the YES Network’s activities at national meetings and provide leadership opportunities for early-career geoscientists. I am also the Geological Society of America’s Organizational Representative. In this capacity, I meet with other members of the YES Network, GSA staff, AGI staff in order to plan and carry out events at the GSA national meeting.

Why did you join the YES Net-work?

I went to Beijing, China for the First YES Congress and liked the atmosphere and goals of the group of people there. I continue to be involved in the YES Network because of the leadership opportunities and privilege of working with such a talented and won-derful group of geoscientists.

OneGeology Best Application competitionJust to let you know about a fantastic competition that One-Geology have just launched, aim specifically at YES Network members. The main aim of the OneGeology Best Application competition is to demonstrate the wide range of potential ap-plied uses and applications that the OneGeology Portal, and geological data/services that it provides, can offer for easy discoverability, access and use. The prize is free registration to the IGC in Brisbane next year. The details can be found here: http://www.onegeology.org/igc34/competition.htmlMany thanks, Jo ThompsonYES Network Organizational Representative, British Geo-logical Survey

Research and Project Collaborations YES Network: Geomicrobiology InitiativePunyasloke Bhadurywww.yesgeomicrobiology.blogspot.comEmail: [email protected] the last decade the interdisciplinary domain of Geo-biology including geomicrobiology has generated plenty of

interests among geologists, earth scientists and biologists. New discoveries in geomicrobiology has significantly changed the way we think about the origin and evolution of life on earth. YES Geomicrobiology is an initiative of YES Network to motivate early-career geoscientists to pursue research in geobiology and also encourage collaboration amongst geologists, geochemists microbiologists and environmental scientists.

IUGS Global Geoscience Taskforce CollaborationHeather Houltonhttp://bit.ly/rR6FYkThank you to all who provided geoscience information (edu-cational institutions, professional societies, employers) for the global compendium on geoscience information that the IUGS Global geoscience Taskforce is compiling. As part of this effort we will be contacting these institutions to get the most up-to-date information about their institutions. We need help translat-ing the emails from English into a variety of languages. Please contact Abi Howe ([email protected]) if you would like to help with this effort. Thank you!

Updated Decision Points SurveyJo Venus and Heather Houltonwww.networkyes.org/index.php/projects/decision_points_surveyThank you to all who participated in the YES Network Decision Points Survey. We got a lot of feedback from our survey partici-pants and had several good discussions with colleagues at the AGU 2010 Fall Meeting in December. Based on these discus-sions, we have updated the survey to be more extensive to better capture information about why people stay in or leave the geosci-ences. If you have not yet taken the updated survey, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey today.

Do you have an idea that you’d like to develop with other YES Net-work members? Send a brief descrip-tion of your research or project idea and your contact information (name and email) to networkyes.newsletter@gmail .com.

Welcome! The YES Network is pleased to announce the preliminary program for the 2nd World Congress to be held during the 34th IGC in Brisbane, August 2012. We encourage all of our members to take an active part in both the IGC and YES programs which do not overlap. We will also welcome new members and ICG delegates who wish to attend any of the YES sessions during the week. We look forward to meeting you in Brisbane.-- The YES2012 Organizing Committee

Award Committee Volunteers WantedThe YES 2012 coordinators are seeking YES members to form a committee to select outstanding public figures to receive an award for his/her impacts on the connection be-tween geosciences and societal issue. The recipient will be awarded this honor at the YES World Congress in Brisbane. This is a short term position, and members of the commit-tee will need to act quickly to formulate nominees for the award. Please contact [email protected] to volunteer or for more information.

Funding!YES Network Finance Team (from Eliakimu)I would like to notify the NRs and Regional Representatives that despite of having opportunity of sponsorship for YES Network members who have applied)  to get financial support, we encourage more the application of local funds available in  each  country to apply for attending YES BRISBANE 2012 Events. This will help us to have many delegates of young profes-sional and thus we can be able to reach many people and then motivates them through these international  conferences.  One thing to note is that each specific leader has to encourage pro-spective applicants to make sure they have projects to present, or research work being it oral or poster presentation when request-ing for funding support.

Kindly inform NRs to assist on this as much as they can to attract more young earth scientist proffesionals during the events. --Eliakimu, YES Netwok Finanace Team

IUGS COGE Logo Contest

The IUGS Commission on Geoscience Education, Training & Technology Transfer (IUGS COGE http://www.iugscoge.com) would like to announce a IUGS COGE Logo contest. As you know, a logo is extremely important as it: carries the im-age of our Commission; is an icon symbol of our institutional link with the IUGS; and, it should have a modern, functional and multipurpose design which encapsulates our vision, mis-sion and orientation towards the future.

To help us with this endeavor, we felt perhaps the Young Earth Scientists Network (Y.E.S.) might be well suited to help us with this endeavor. The contest will be open to everyone, with the following specifications:

1) The IUGS COGE Logo contest is open only to individuals. The contest is not open to companies, institutions, organiza-tions, etc. or to groups associated with such institutions.

2) The logo must contain the words COGE (or it must be clear in its design).

3) The logo must reflect the institutional relation with IUGS.

4)  Due to the requirements for high quality printing, and re-sizing, entries must be submitted in scalable vector graphic format.

5) The logo must reveal the geoscience educational activities of our Commission.

6) All submitted work must be original and not based on any pre-existing design.

7) All entries will become the sole property of IUGS COGE.

8) IUGS COGE  reserves the right to disqualify any entrant or entry at its sole discretion.

9) Accepting the prize constitutes permission for IUGS COGE to make public and otherwise use the winner’s name, and country of residence for publicity purposes.

The winner will receive an Acknowledgement Certificate and a $100 cash award from our Commission which will be of-ficially given at the next IGC Congress in Brisbane, Australia (5-10 August 2012). The deadline for the IUGS COGE Logo contest is 7 July, 2012 (Pacific Daylight Time).
