How did it get to be that time of year again!?! Another ISSA exhibition is right around the corner. This year Berea, KY promises not only a beautiful venue for our show, heavily visited by tourists and locals, but we will be hosted at a historic hotel (the Boone Tavern), group dinners, several unique side trips to neat nearby locations, and of course the chance to socialize, meet,

and share with your fellow Scratchboard artists!

And then there is the show! The online version of selected works is now online at: https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/ClosedShowThumbs.aspx?OJSID=30060 (and included in this issue—Pages 8-12).

The jurors appear to have picked a fantastic variety of subject matter and styles, which I can't wait to see in person!

Oh, and don't forget about the art swap! Bring a small work (5”x7” or smaller, framed or unframed) and take another artist's work home with you. If you are planning to attend, the deadline to book your hotel is April 15.

Other exciting updates that you should have received emails about include the 2018 exhibition videos being made available for free to members, with a code to enter to get them, info about the high school scholarships we are offering (PLEASE share that info with your local high schools), and the t-shirt contest for our show.

from around the world from very talented scratchboard artists and the judges have a difficult time. We hope this exhibi-

tion will showcase the versatility of the medium, different styles and techniques, and a variety of subject matter to the

general public.

Hello members!! Only two months away before our 8th Annual exhibition kicks off and we wanted to let you know about the exciting schedule of events happening this year! ICE BREAKER Thursday May 16, Boone Tavern Inn Time: 5:00 pm For anyone arriving in Berea a day early, ISSA is hosting an ice breaker to allow new attendees to be introduced and receive their welcome packages. Be sure to stop in, say hi, and kick off our event with a beverage and snacks! *exact location in the Inn to be announced* RECEPTION Friday May 17, Kentucky Artisan Center Time: 5:00 - 7:30 pm (Awards presentation 6:00 pm) Due to the center's policy, no alcohol will be served at this event, but there will be light refreshments. Dress is business casual to dressy. Everyone may join in and wear a Kentucky Derby hat for fun - men and women, handmade or store bought - a chance to be creative, and we will try to get a group photo! Members are welcome to have drinks back at the Boone Tavern lounge afterward at their own expense. WORKSHOPS/PRESENTATIONS Saturday May 18, Sunday May 19, Kentucky Artisan Center Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day with one hour lunch *separate schedule will be provided* ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Saturday May 18 Time: 2:30 pm during workshop hours GROUP DINNER Saturday May 18, Boone Tavern Inn Time: 6:00 pm Boone Tavern restaurant has offered to provide us with a buffet dinner at the prepaid cost of $29.00 per person. Din-ner will include iced tea, Kentucky spoon bread, salads, two meat options, side dishes and dessert. Berea College is the only truly free college in the US. All meals are prepared by the chef and students who attend the college. The students work in the restaurant and various college owned places which pays for their tuition. All the furniture in the rooms at the hotel is hand made by the students. By all accounts the food at the restaurant is top notch. Members are asked to RSVP to the dinner by email to [email protected] no later than April 15th. You will be invoiced through paypal at the time of your reserva-tion. Unfortunately, if you can't make the dinner we cannot refund your payment *Please specify the number of people you wish to reserve*

ART SWAP Sunday May 19, Kentucky Artisan Center The art swap will take place on Sunday during workshop hours, however, all members participating are asked to bring their art to the workshop Saturday morning so we can set them up for display. Each member is invited to bring a small donated scratch-board artwork (no larger than 5 x 7) framed or unframed, of your choice. Each artwork will be displayed and numbered. Each member will choose a number and they will go home with the corresponding artwork. This is a voluntary event, but only artists who have submitted a work will be allowed to participate. Great chance to go home with someone else's artwork as a keepsake! GREAT SALTPETRE CAVE TOUR AND NATURE WALK Monday May 20 Time: Please meet at the Boone Tavern lobby at 9am for full day tour, or 12pm for half day tour. It will take one hour to get to the cave. There will likely be several people who can offer rides, which we will work out once we have an idea how many want to go. Any changes to the schedule will be an-nounced at the time of the exhibition. Please bring: water, snacks (or packed lunch), sturdy walking shoes or boots, flashlight, camera gear, Deet or other bug spray, and any other items for your comfort during a full day outside. Ticks may be present in the area. A light jacket is recommended inside the cave which is 55 degrees, and in case of rain. John Agnew will lead groups through the cave. The cave pre-serve is not open to the public this day, but ISSA has been granted personal access so we have it all to ourselves! Mem-bers will be asked to make a small donation for this access which we will give to the park. John will impart his knowledge on caving and he and Lori Dunn will help mem-bers find and identify some of its inhabitants; particularly several species of salamanders, bats, cave crickets and also snakes and other amphibians to be discovered on the grounds. Of course there will be lots of birding opportunity as well! This will be a relaxed, fun outing and a chance to get to know some of nature's tiny inhabitants. KHP is considered one of the top attractions in the Lex-ington area. For artists, it presents a great opportunity to see and photograph a variety of horse breeds. May 17-July 2019—Kentucky Artesian Center—8th Annual ISSA Exhibition Events Schedule


SATURDAY MAY 18

9:00 - 9:45 am - Cathy Sheeter MSA; "Working With Photoshop"

Cathy will be talking about how she uses photoshop to edit reference photos to create more dynamic lighting, as well as how she combines multiple reference photos using photoshop layers, in order to use these images as layouts for scratch-boards. Although the discussion will be about photoshop, most features are applicable to other photo editing programs as well.

10:00 - 10:45 am - Terri Mote SSA; "Creating Gray Scales Us-ing PITT Markers"

This is will be a hands on workshop. Terri uses the Pitt pens and brushes in two ways. On scratchboard the warm and cool shades of grey are helpful for light washes and touch-ups that require less re-scratching than Ampersand inks. On clayboard, the brush pens are great for under painting prior to scratching or glazing with colored inks. Terri will bring sample boards, and packs of ink pens. Members are welcome to have their own supplies on hand as well.

10: 55 - 11:00 am -Patsy Davis SSA, Lori Dunn MSA; "Introduction to Seeing The Unseen"

Patsy and Lori will outline the goal for the challenge that will be discussed on Sunday so that members wishing to take part can have the evening to work on their observations.

11:00 - 12:00 pm - Master's Roundtable part 1

Masters in attendance will be available at different stations to provide WIP critique and/or hands on help (please bring your work with you), demonstrate techniques unique to their style, or offer artistic advice. Members can choose which Master they wish to question and will have an allotted time. Time with each master is to be determined based on number of mem-bers participating, but it will be short - similar to speed dating, please be ready with your questions in advance!!

Ann and Rod collaborated on 3 clayboard works. This is their story

10:00 - 10:45 am - Amy Stauffer SSA; "Composition"

Composition is one of the foundational principles to consider as an artist. Amy will discuss some of the basic rules governing successful design and how to apply them to your work.

11:00 - 11:45 am - Scott Krohn SSA; "Texture Time"

In this workshop, Scott will introduce the importance of ren-dering textures in scratchboard. With examples provided, this will be an informal and hands on session giving everyone a chance to practice creating different textures. We are all invit-ed to move around the room and share our ideas. Please bring some small scrap boards with you and your tools of choice!

11: 45 - 1: 15 LUNCH

1:15 - 2:00 pm - Mini Art Swap

Participating members should bring a small (no larger than 5 x7) scratchboard work for a blind swap with other members. A great chance to go home with someone else's art! You will pick a number that corresponds to that artwork. A challenge may proceed the number selection if time permits!

2: 15 - 4:00 pm - Lori Dunn MSA, Patsy Davis SSA, John Ag-new MSA and Scott Krohn SSA; "Seeing The Unseen - A Still Life Challenge"

Artists and members will be challenged to "observe" an object through touch only and then render the object in scratchboard using stippling or cross hatching techniques. Based on the ar-tistic adage "Draw what you see, not what you know", the goal is to encourage members to "see" beyond what is in front of you or in your photo and adapt artworks accordingly. Mem-bers will be encouraged to discuss the complexities of the challenge with Patsy, Lori, John and Scott during this period (please bring a small board if you wish to also take part in the challenge) We will start the process on Saturday and members will have all weekend to work on their artworks.

NOTE: as always, during evenings at the hotel there will

be a room available for us to get together informally to

scratch, talk, laugh, eat and share tips - we hope you

will join in!

We have chosen the Boone Tavern Hotel as our headquarters for the 2019 Exhibition and Workshop:

Individuals are responsible for making their own reservations. If you plan to share a room, choose one person to make the reservation.

MAKING RESERVATIONS

Reservations can be made by calling Boone Tavern and asking for the group block International Society of Scratchboard. 859-985-3701. Guests may also make reservations by going to the Boone Tavern website www.boonetavernhotel.com and selecting the Reservations tab. From that screen select “Check Availability and Book Now” blue button. Use the group code of: 168069 in GROUP ID. That code is specific to your group block only. Then, follow the reservations prompts to complete the reservations.

All reservations require a credit card number to guarantee the reservation only. Payment is due upon check-in. We have a 24 hour cancel policy. All reservations must be canceled 24 hours prior to arrival to avoid a one-night room and tax cancellation fee. Your block will be open at the group rate until April 15, 2019. After that, all the remaining rooms will go back to general public selling.

Group rate pricing:

King Size Bed: $120

Queen Size Bed: $115

Two Double Beds: $120

Scholarly Full (one full size bed): $105

All rates are plus 10.24% total tax.

Parking and Wifi are both complimentary. Parking is available next to the hotel, as well as an overflow lot off Jackson Street.

Deadline for reservations is April 15, 2019. The group rates will remain the same price May 15-22 for anyone who would like to check in early that week or stay a couple of extra days.

Reservations made after this date will be subject to prevailing rate and availability. Any rooms in the block not reserved by that time will be released for booking by the general public.

HOTEL

Boone Tavern recently added a café where one can

purchase coffee and adult beverages that is open until 10:00 pm daily. There is also a full restaurant on site and many local restaurants within walking distance but your breakfast is not included in room price.

Also, complimentary parking and complimentary wi-fi.

All furniture in the rooms was hand made by Berea College Students.

TRAVELING BY AIR

The closest airport to Berea is Lexington, Bluegrass Airport (43 miles). Travel time from the airport to our hotel is approximately 45 minutes but will vary by time of day and whether any construction is underway on I-75.

Other airport options include CVG (Greater Cincinnati Airport in Covington, KY -112 miles) and SDF (Louisville International Airport -111 miles).

Price of about 65-85 dollars for Uber taxi. Transportation from the airport to the hotel will be up to you and you may want to share rides with someone arriving at a similar time. We will check into bus/van services and will let everyone know at a later date.

LOWER COST HOTELS

For those wanting lower cost rooms, there are other options in Berea off I-75. Red Roof Inn, Quality Inn and Holiday Inn Express are lower cost options but be sure to check out reviews before booking.

GROUP DINNER

For anyone who would like to participate, a group buffet dinner has been arranged with Boone Tavern for Saturday, May 18. The time will be communicated closer to the event. The cost per person will be $29.00. They have requested each person either use cash or one credit card be used for the entire meal.

Good Morning,

Because it was not listed on the the Kentucky Artisan Center Loan Agreement form, there has been some confusion as to whether to report your art piece(s) size(s) with or with out the frame measurements. I talked with the centers director, Gwen Heffner, this weekend and she apologized that she did not stipulate on the form that the measurements should include the frame. If you have already sent in your form, and have not included the measurement(s) with the frame(s), please send an e-mail to Gwen at [email protected] and let her know of the size change. In your subject line, please make sure you type in ISSA Exhibit Size Change.

The loan agreements should be e-mailed directly to Gwen by April 15th.

An Historic Berea Hotel

Discover Boone Tavern’s Rich History An historic Berea hotel, Boone Tavern was built in 1909 at the suggestion of Nellie Frost, the wife of the College president, William G. Frost. As the reputation of Berea College grew, so did the number of guests that Mrs. Frost received, reaching a total of 300 guests in one summer. Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant– named for Appalachian hero Daniel Boone – has been hosting visitors of Berea, Kentucky, ever since, including the Dalai Lama, Henry Ford, President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, and Robert Frost.

Construction of Boone Tavern began in 1909 based on designs by the New York architectural firm of Cady & See at a cost of $20,000. The building, made of bricks manufactured by students in the College's brickyard, was constructed by the College's Woodwork Department. The "Tavern" portion of the name is derived from the historic definition that refers to a public inn for travellers rather than the modern definition related to the sale of alcohol.

Built at a prominent location on the College Square in the heart of Berea where the old Dixie Highway intersected with the campus, Boone has become one of the most famous Kentucky hotels and has been known as a popular destination for travellers of business and leisure alike.

2018 Middletown Ohio Exhibition Workshop Videos—Now Available

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS 2019

ISSA celebrates student creativity and excellence in

art by awarding scholarships to students who have

a passion for art and have created at least two

works in scratchboard.

ISSA will award two $500 scholarships per year to

students enrolling in a two or four year post-

secondary education institution.

Qualifications to Enter:

Applicants must:

• be a full-time student and a senior in good

standing in high school

• be continuing to a post-secondary education

institution

• have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, transcript required

• provide a letter of recommendation from an art

instructor

• write a 1000 word essay explaining qualifications

and reasons for applying

• submit 6 current art pieces including at least 2

scratchboard works. Digital images will be

submitted via the form below, please note that

image quality is important and will impact

judging.

Application Deadline: April 15th of each year.

Awards will be announced on May 15 of each year.

In addition to the $500 scholarship, the winners

will receive a one year Associate membership in

ISSA.

The names of the winners will be published in the

ISSA Newsletter, on our web site, and on our

Facebook page.

ISSA Board Members, Officers and their immediate

family members (parents, spouses, siblings,

children) are not eligible.

Colorado Governor's Art Show in Loveland, CO featuring Cathy Sheeter, MSA

"Take All Comers" will be one of four works that I have available at the Colorado Governor's Art Show in Loveland, CO May 3 to June 2, 2019 at the Loveland Museum (https://governorsartshow.org/).

The 28th Annual Colorado Governor’s Art Show & Sale introduces the public to the fine art of many of the state’s top artists. The juried show seeks entries from all Colorado artists and exhibits the chosen work in a museum setting. The sale proceeds support Colorado artists and many youth and community needs in Larimer County,

Colorado through the Loveland and Thompson Valley Rotary Clubs.

The 28th Annual Show will be held at the prestigious Loveland Museum located at 503 N. Lincoln Avenue. The Opening Night Patron/Gala is May 3rd from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the website at

$75 per person. The show is open to the public on Saturday, May 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The show will run through June 2nd.

Patrick Hedges,MSA

Patrick Hedges, MSA recently took the Gold Medal (best in show) at the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia's

major biennial show. This international exhibition is only held every two years so to win gold for the second time

in the last five shows is a huge thrill for Patrick. "Shoebill, a Ugandan Icon" is a 24" x 18" Clayboard with a

contemporary design incorporating the colours of the Ugandan flag. Congratulations Patrick!!

selected in two nationally juried exhibitions: The Edinburgh Realty Art Awards (Dunedin),

which was voted 5th Peoples Choice; and The Impressions National Art Awards

2019 - 5 day scratchboard workshop in Grafton NSW

Rikki Fisher - Scratchboard

April 13, 2019 - April 17, 2019 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

This workshop is suitable for both newcomers and experienced artists. Students will follow the step-by-step process on how to use the medium and achieve the high drama that ex-emplifies Rikki’s work.

The course will explore: what tools are used to create various textures, what images are better than others to use, how to achieve a dramatic effect with B&W, layering to create depth and form and the use of minimal color to add that extra focal point. During the five day workshop, Rikki will demonstrate her techniques for particular subjects such as eyes, fur, feathers and smooth textures such as skin.

The class will be guided by the individual needs of the students as they arise. Rikki will re-spond to each student’s unique needs and share her techniques and expertize to resolve any issues. Students will leave feeling empowered with a firm grasp of the medium. They will complete two scratch works, one of an animal and the other a portrait. I will supply some images, but you are welcome to bring your own for reference. On day one of the workshop, a kit containing boards and tools needed for the five days will be available for $25. You will receive a comprehensive material list upon enrolment.
