MAKING WAVES TO EMPOWER WOMEN AND GIRLS IN VIRGINIA BEACH
Chesapeake Firefighter Paramedic Mandy George faces new challenges every day that she’s on the job. When an emergency call comes in, she races to the scene, not always sure of what she and her coworkers will find there. The job can be physically demanding, and there’s always something new to learn in the fields of firefighting and medicine. “Women in nontraditional fields are the ones who can best show girls that they can do the jobs,” George said. “To be honest, I didn’t always want to be a firefighter paramedic. I was a theatre and English major in college. But, I chose this career because I thought it would be a challenge, and it is.”

PRESIDENT’S PONDERINGS
I now have my first branch meeting as president under my belt, and I am already looking forward to the next one! At our September meeting, we heard from Nettie Faulcon, who was the first African American female accepted into the engineering trainee program at NASA Langley Research Center. It was eye-opening to hear about the adversity she faced, and it was interesting to hear from an insider who could share the truths and the sensationalized “truths” portrayed in the movie Hidden Figures.
A few days after our branch meeting, members hosted a table at Scout Ready, hosted by Girl Scouts at Pembroke Mall. It was a great time and a great visibility opportunity for our branch!
We have quite a year planned—be sure to check out the calendar at a glance at the end of the newsletter. Hope to see you at many events this year!

For AAUW Virginia Beach
Membership Matters Welcome to new member Amy Beldon! Amy came to the September meeting with Sally D and decided to join that night! Be sure to introduce yourself to her at our October meeting. You may also see her at a book club meeting or outreach program. Remember our new Bring a Visitor program? Since Sally D brought Amy to the meeting, she will get an extra ticket for the Holiday Luncheon Baskets raffle. How about you? Do you have a friend or co-worker who would enjoy AAUW? Bring her to a meeting. You may win a prize! We want to celebrate our members. What better way than wishing them a Happy Birthday! We are starting this now, but we are missing some birthdates. All we need is your birth month and day. You’ll see a special column on the sign in sheet at the next meeting. Or just send us an email. We are still taking RSVPs for the Members at Large reception on October 7th. We have invited the MALs in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area. That’s a total of 29 potential members. We’ll let you know how it turns out at the October 18th meeting. Thanks to all the members who attended and helped make this a fun event. We hope you will join the bandwagon to help grow our membership. AAUW VB offers something for everyone: fun, friends, education, and most of all…

Public Policy The ILO, a United Nations agency warns that 40.3 million people across the globe were subject to some form of modern slavery in 2016. Among them, about 28.7 million — or 71% — were women or girls forced into sex, marriage or labor. The Walk Free Foundation estimates the about 57,000 are in the United States. That is why AAUW Focuses on Combatting Human Trafficking as one of its main Public Policy goals. We need to help raise awareness of this scourge that hurts women everywhere, and to highlight and support legislation to eradicate it.
