National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month Kicks Off New YearHuman trafficking is “crime that involves exploiting a person for labor, services or commercial sex.” Victims can be found in both illegal industries such as sex and drug trafficking as well as legal industries, such as salons, restaurants, hotels, farms and child and elder care facilities. According to the Department of Justice, there is no single profile of a trafficking victim. However, traffickers often prey on the poor, marginalized, vulnerable and those living in unsafe situations.

Red flags that may indicate human trafficking include persons who are: N Unpaid, paid very little or paid only through tips.

N Not free to leave or come and go as they wish.

N Lacking medical care and/or denied medical services by an employer.

N In possession of few or no personal items

N Not in control of personal identification documents like an ID or passport.

If you see any of these red flags, you can contact the DoD Inspector General Hotline, 800-424-9098 (www.dodig.mil/hotline) or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.

January is National Stalking Awareness MonthSTALKING: KNOW IT. NAME IT. STOP IT.

January 2019 marks the fifteenth National Stalking Awareness Month, an annual call to recognize and respond to the serious crime of stalking. Stalking impacts over one in six women and one in 17 men in the United States -- yet, despite its prevalence and impacts, many victims and criminal justice professionals underestimate stalking’s danger and urgency. Many stalking victims experience being followed, approached, monitored and/or threatened – in-person and through various forms of technology. Victims and survivors often suffer anxiety, social dysfunction and severe depression as a result of their victimization, and many lose time from work and/or move. Stalking is a terrifying crime as well as a predictor of potentially lethal violence: in 85 percent of cases where an intimate partner attempted to murder his female partner, stalking preceded the attack.

The awareness theme “Stalking: Know It. Name It. Stop It.” is a call to action for the Navy community. While police and victim-serving professionals are critical allies, the reality is that the vast majority of victims tell friends or family about the stalking first.

For additional resources to help promote National Stalking Awareness Month, please visit www.stalkingawareness.org and www.ovw.usdoj.gov.

Keeping Pets Safe In WinterPets are like family members and now that its winter, it is important to take extra precautions to ensure your pets’ safety and well-being.

First, keep pets indoors whenever possible. If you have to leave them outside, minimize their expo-sure to the elements. Provide an adequate shelter that is protected from the wind and large enough for your pet to lie down in, but small enough to retain body heat. The shelter should be raised off the ground a few inches and the floor should be covered with either cedar shavings or straw to maintain warmth. It is also important to cover the shelter opening with heavy plastic or waterproof burlap to keep the wind out.

Next, be mindful to protect pets from salt and other chemicals used to melt snow or prevent freezing. Wipe your pets’ feet with a damp cloth after they have been outside so their paws do not get irritated and they do not inadvertently ingest chemicals when they groom themselves. Ensure chemicals such as antifreeze are put away and any spills are cleaned up properly. Antifreeze tastes sweet to animals but is highly toxic.

Finally, be sure to include your pets in your emer-gency preparedness plan. Have at least three days’ worth of food and medication for your pets in your kit and have a record of their vaccinations.

Taking the proper steps to protect your pets and planning accordingly in case of an emergency will help ensure that your furry family members stay healthy and safe during the coldest winter months.
