Visit a Participating Location August 16-22The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (DoAg) announces that 2020 Farm-to-Chef Week will run from Sunday August 16 through Saturday August 22This special week encourages culinary professionals to use Connecticut Growningredients in new ways on their menus while educating residents and visitorsabout the diversity of farm products grown and raised in Connecticut ldquoConnecticutrsquos farmers have established strong relationships with dining venuesto provide high quality fresh foods to chefs and bakers throughout the staterdquosaid Bryan P Hurlburt Agriculture Commissioner ldquoThe COVID-19 pandemichas proven to be challenging for both producers and restaurants as they faceunprecedented circumstances and highlighted weaknesses in our food systemFarm-to-Chef Week is an opportunity for residents to show their support forthese local businesses and help them overcome these challengesrdquoDiners are encouraged to visit wwwCTFarmtoChefcom to find a listing ofparticipating dining venues located throughout the state Click on a location toview their menu and see which farms they source ingredients fromReservations are encouraged especially if you plan to dine in or place anorder for take out to enjoy at homeIn the Northeast corner of the state ANYA in Thompson joins the lineup ofdining venues for the first time this year Earlier this summer they startedfocusing on sourcing local food to incorporate in their regular menu and will beworking with nearly one dozen local farms to create their Connecticut GrownmenuIncluded on the menu will be tomatoes zucchini summer squash swiss chardsweet corn and cherry tomatoes from Betsyrsquos Stand in Sterling run by BetsyMolodich and her daughter Katie Sweet ldquoItrsquos really gratifying to see our farmlisted on [ANYArsquos] menu along with neighboring farmsrdquo says Sweet

PROTECT YOUR HORSE VACCINATE FOR MOSQUITO-BORNEDISEASES

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture is reminding the statersquos horsecommunity to watch out for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West NileVirus (WNV) The mosquito-borne diseases affect horses birds and humansHorses are the domestic animals most susceptible to infection with EEE andWNV virusesTo date the State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program hasidentified one town with EEE activity (Stonington) and eight towns with WNVactivity (Bridgeport Darien Greenwich Guilford Newington NorwalkStamford Wethersfield) Horse owners should review vaccination records with their veterinarians toensure that EEE and WNV vaccinations are current More frequent boostersare recommended in endemic areas Animal owners should also takeprecautions to reduce potential mosquito breeding sites on their propertyincluding eliminating standing water brush piles and removing equipmentwhere water can collect Water troughs should be emptied and cleaned at leastonce per week Horses should be kept indoors at night when possible withinsect repellant applied to reduce the risk of exposureIf your horse is showing neurologic signs ie hyperexcitability tremorsconvulsions paralysis head tilt head pressing incoordination drowsinessrecumbency colic or death itrsquos important to call a veterinarian to determine adiagnosis and treatment Subsidized diagnostic testing and necropsy servicesfor neurologic horses and birds are available at the Connecticut VeterinaryMedical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL) at the University of Connecticut inStorrs for animals residing in ConnecticutNeurologic diseases of domestic animals such as EEE WNV and Rabies arereportable to the State Veterinarian at 860-713-2505 For more information onanimals and animal health visit the state website

Status as of August 6 2020 The entire state is classified as STAGE 1 --BELOW NORMAL CONDITIONS Connecticut is experiencing abnormally dryconditions The Interagency Drought Work Group is meeting as needed toreview conditions and make preparations in accordance with the ConnecticutDrought Preparedness and Response Plan Some public water utilities havereached drought thresholds and have issued voluntary or mandatoryconservation alerts Plan to conserve water and follow state or localconservation guidelines if issued

USDA ANNOUNCES MORE ELIGIBLE COMMODITIES FOR CFAPUS Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that additionalcommodities are covered by the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP)in response to public comments and data Additionally the US Department ofAgriculture (USDA) is extending the deadline to apply for the program toSeptember 11 and producers with approved applications will receive their finalpayment After reviewing over 1700 responses even more farmers andranchers will have the opportunity for assistance to help keep operations afloat

during these tough timesUSDA collected comments and supporting data for consideration of additionalcommodities through June 22 2020 The following additional commodities arenow eligible for CFAP

PROTECT YOUR HORSE VACCINATE FOR MOSQUITO-BORNEDISEASES

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture is reminding the statersquos horsecommunity to watch out for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West NileVirus (WNV) The mosquito-borne diseases affect horses birds and humansHorses are the domestic animals most susceptible to infection with EEE andWNV virusesTo date the State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program hasidentified one town with EEE activity (Stonington) and eight towns with WNVactivity (Bridgeport Darien Greenwich Guilford Newington NorwalkStamford Wethersfield) Horse owners should review vaccination records with their veterinarians toensure that EEE and WNV vaccinations are current More frequent boostersare recommended in endemic areas Animal owners should also takeprecautions to reduce potential mosquito breeding sites on their propertyincluding eliminating standing water brush piles and removing equipmentwhere water can collect Water troughs should be emptied and cleaned at leastonce per week Horses should be kept indoors at night when possible withinsect repellant applied to reduce the risk of exposureIf your horse is showing neurologic signs ie hyperexcitability tremorsconvulsions paralysis head tilt head pressing incoordination drowsinessrecumbency colic or death itrsquos important to call a veterinarian to determine adiagnosis and treatment Subsidized diagnostic testing and necropsy servicesfor neurologic horses and birds are available at the Connecticut VeterinaryMedical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL) at the University of Connecticut inStorrs for animals residing in ConnecticutNeurologic diseases of domestic animals such as EEE WNV and Rabies arereportable to the State Veterinarian at 860-713-2505 For more information onanimals and animal health visit the state website

Status as of August 6 2020 The entire state is classified as STAGE 1 --BELOW NORMAL CONDITIONS Connecticut is experiencing abnormally dryconditions The Interagency Drought Work Group is meeting as needed toreview conditions and make preparations in accordance with the ConnecticutDrought Preparedness and Response Plan Some public water utilities havereached drought thresholds and have issued voluntary or mandatoryconservation alerts Plan to conserve water and follow state or localconservation guidelines if issued

USDA ANNOUNCES MORE ELIGIBLE COMMODITIES FOR CFAPUS Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that additionalcommodities are covered by the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP)in response to public comments and data Additionally the US Department ofAgriculture (USDA) is extending the deadline to apply for the program toSeptember 11 and producers with approved applications will receive their finalpayment After reviewing over 1700 responses even more farmers andranchers will have the opportunity for assistance to help keep operations afloat

Specialty Crops - aloe leaves bananas batatas bok choy carambola(star fruit) cherimoya chervil (french parsley) citron curry leavesdaikon dates dill donqua (winter melon) dragon fruit (red pitaya)endive escarole filberts frisee horseradish kohlrabi kumquats leeksmamey sapote maple sap (for maple syrup) mesculin mix microgreensnectarines parsley persimmons plantains pomegranates pummelospumpkins rutabagas shallots tangelos turnipsceleriac turmericuplandwinter cress water cress yautiamalanga and yucacassavaNon-Specialty Crops and Livestock - liquid eggs frozen eggs and allsheep Only lambs and yearlings (sheep less than two years old) werepreviously eligibleAquaculture - catfish crawfish largemouth bass and carp sold live asfoodfish hybrid striped bass red drum salmon sturgeon tilapia troutornamentaltropical fish and recreational sportfishNursery Crops and Flowers - nursery crops and cut flowers

Other changes to CFAP include

Seven commodities ndash onions (green) pistachios peppermint spearmintwalnuts and watermelons ndash are now eligible for Coronavirus Aid Reliefand Economic Stability (CARES) Act funding for sales losses Originallythese commodities were only eligible for payments on marketingadjustmentsCorrecting payment rates for onions (green) pistachios peppermintspearmint walnuts and watermelons
