active  listening,  there  is  no

passive  listening.  You’re

either  listening,  or  you’re

not.”  To  that  end,  he  guided

us  through  the  Watson-

Barker  Listening  Test  so  we

could  see  for  ourselves  how

effectively  we  listen.

Rick  walked  the  group

through  some  of  the  tools  he

has  developed  over  his

lifelong  pursuit  of  listening,

such  as  the  SIER  model  that

emphasizes  sensing,

interpreting,  evaluating  and

responding.  Rick  sees

listening  as  the  cornerstone

of  all  human  behavior,  and

likens  the  SIER  model  to  a

similar  culinary  term:

“searing  in  the  juices.”

From  his  book,  “Listening

Pays,”  Rick  shared  some  of

the  essential  elements  of  an

organizational  listening  audit,

including  an  assessment  of

the  listening  mindset,

listening  systems,

accountability,  measurement

and  listening  development.

The  “Listening  Pays”  model

distills  to  these  six  key  steps

in  a  repeating  cycle:

1.  Build  a  solid  foundation

2.  Develop  healthy  habits

bimonthly  meetings.

Speakers  and  their

topics,  networking

with  fellow  OD

professionals,  and

sharing  best

practices  continue  to

be  why  you  come  to

the  meetings.    You

prefer  high  quality

speakers  over

particular  topics

(forced  answer)  by  a

2-to-1  margin.

Topics  you'd  like  to

hear  more  about

vary  across  the  OD

spectrum,  from  old

standbys  like

Leadership

Development  and

Managing/Facilitating

Change  to  Emotional

Intelligence  and  the

more  quantitative

areas  such  as

Metrics,  Tools,

Surveys,  and

Assessments.

An  ongoing  challenge

for  us  is  making  sure

we  continue  to  find

creative  ways  to

encourage

networking.

Additionally,  there  is

interest  among  a

significant  number  of

you  to  participate  in

an  organized

volunteering  effort.

And  many  of  you

think  that  an  off-

hours  social  event

would  be  valuable

and  worthwhile.

All  of  this  will  help

guide  us  successfully

through  2014.

Thanks  again  for

your  candid  feedback

and  continued

3.  Take  100%  responsibility

4.  Ditch  the  distractions

5.  Lead  your  emotions

6.  Take  meaningful  action

To  underscore  just  how

essential  listening  is  for

leaders,  Rick  shared  an

excerpt  from  “Sound  of  the

Forest”:

“To  hear  the  unheard  is  a

necessary  discipline  to  be  a

good  ruler.  For  only  when  a

ruler  has  learned  to  listen

closely  to  the  people’s

hearts,  hearing  their  feelings

uncommunicated,  pains

unexpressed,  and  complaints

not  spoken  of,  can  he  hope

to  inspire  confidence  in  his

people,  understand  when

something  is  wrong,  and

meet  the  true  needs  of  his

citizens.  The  demise  of

states  comes  when  leaders

listen  only  to  superficial

words  and  do  not  penetrate

deeply  into  the  souls  of  the

people  to  hear  their  true

opinions,  feelings,  and

desires.”  Pan  Ku,  Sound  ofthe  Forest.

In  October,  Rick  Bommelje

shared  his  model  of  how  to

achieve  significance  through

the  power  of  listening:
