Pipelines September 2018
Volume 99 Issue 1
by Douglas Starr, Dean ([email protected])
Greetings dear colleagues:
The intent of starting a new program
year in our churches and indeed in
this professional community of
organists is to begin in a spirit of
peaceful organization. Did you
smile? I’m not sure about my
program at St. Paul’s Episcopal but I
feel that we have done so in the
Pittsburgh Chapter of AGO. Sub-
Dean Chaz Bowers and his program committee have planned a
wonderful season for us. Edward Alan Moore and the Organ Artist
Series committee have planned an outstanding 40th anniversary
year season. Justin Wallace and our colleague teachers continue
to build a thriving Pittsburgh Organ Academy. There will be much
to enjoy this year because so many have worked so hard. Thank
you all and, by the way, I am sure that your associated
enterprises; your teaching, performing, and conducting, will also
thrive because of your dedication and expertise. A great way to
thank our colleagues is to participate by attending our monthly
meetings. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday September
24th for Hooked On Hymns! A Hymn Playing Panel Presentation
by colleagues Don Fellows, Alan Lewis, and Cynthia Pock hosted
by Don Megahan at Ingomar Methodist Church, Franklin Park!

DEAN’S NOTES
Pipelines September 2018
by Chaz Bowers, Sub-Dean (sub-dean @pitago.org )
August 7, 2018
Dear Colleagues,
I hope that you have enjoyed the beautiful weather over the summer months that we, in Western Pennsylvania rarely get to enjoy. As we begin to look toward the fall, I hope that you are rejuvenated and refreshed, and looking forward to another year of exciting programming for our monthly guild meetings. Before announcing theslate for the entire program year, please allow me the opportunity to provide some basic information on the September Meeting:
Hooked On Hymns!
A Hymn Playing Panel Presentation by Don Fellows, Alan Lewis, and Cynthia Pock
Monday, September 24, 2018 at 6:00 P.M.
Ingomar Methodist Church, 1501 W Ingomar Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237
Don Megahan has so graciously agreed to host our opening meeting at Ingomar. The program committee and Ihave asked three individuals who we deemed to be excellent hymn players from various denominations in our chapter to present a panel discussion/presentation on hymn playing. Each will select three hymns (nine, in total) that we will together sing. They will share with us how they approached the playing of the hymns, their registration choices, what resources/techniques they used, and any other thoughtful advice they have in hymn playing. This should be both an interesting and useful meeting; certainly one you won’t want to miss!

AGO NATIONAL CONVENTION, KANSAS CITY, JULY 2-6, 2018
Some 1200+ organists filled the churches and streets of Kansas City during the week of the National Convention, July 2-6. It was a busy week filled with recitals, concerts, workshops, exhibits, and some beautiful churches and venues with good organs. Perhaps the most stunning venue and organ is in Helzburg Hall in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The architecture of the building is very contemporary and beautiful. The inside of the hall is stunning with the placement of the organ (102 rank Casavant, 2012, 4 manuals, mechanical action) high up in the front with a very dramatic configuration of pipes. (Google “Kauffman Center for the Arts” to get a good look.) The hall has excellent acoustics. This venue was used three times during the convention: the opening worship service and choral concert, Chelsea Chen’s recital and the hymn festival, and the closing concert. Another outstanding venue is the Community of Christ Temple (formerly Church of the Latter Day Saints) where John Obetz was the organist for many years . It is also beautiful to see, and Todd Wilson’s well-chosen and wonderful recital showed thebeauty and sounds of the organ well. There were others, but it would take too much time and space.
Newly commissioned works were included inalmost all of the concerts. Our own Benjamin Cornelius-Bates’ commission was performed Friday afternoon byJennifer Pasqual. His Sonata No. 1 includes fourmovements and was very well received. It is accessiblefor the average organist, and you can get it from DavidSchaap at Selah Publishing. The attached photo wastaken after the concert. (From left to right: BarbaraMcKelway, Preston Dibble, Ben, Xenia Yelovich,Michelle Kardos, Ann Labounsky.)
The Kansas City planners chose and used theorgans and churches well for the many events takingplace. To go down the list of everything would takeforever so I will name a few things that come to mind. The opening worship service was a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I which included organ, a brass and percussion group, a narrator, a speaker, and choir, and was a very moving service. The Kansas City Chorale followed the service. The subject of the Hymn Festival was peace and was also varied and meaningful. The recital of the winners of the 2016 performance (NYACOP) and improvisation (NCOI) competitions, Katelyn Emerson and Thomas Dahl, was verywell done. The seven Rising Stars are the winners of the 2017 Regional conventions. They were outstanding, and the program also included interesting conversations with Michael Barone. If the two winners and the RisingStars are any indication of our future, it is in good hands. It isn’t possible to hear every organist, but I’ll run down the list of those I heard – all outstanding with a good variety of music. Many of the recitalists, in addition to a commissioned work, performed music written by composers who lived and worked in the time frame that includes WWI. The music was not necessarily about or written during WWI. In addition to the artists mentioned above, they were Doug Cleveland, Vincent Dubois, Thierry Escaich performing his own organ concerto, JamesHigdon, Kimberly Marshall, Ben Sheen and Damin Spritzer. They all performed well and knew how to make themusic “sing.”
It’s difficult to see everyone at a convention but Pittsburgh Chapter members that I saw were Ben Cornelius-Bates, Michele Kaidos, Ann Labounsky, Anne Smith, Jim Stark, Xenia Yelovich and David Schaap who also had his own exhibit, Selah Publishing. Former Pittsburghers who send greetings are Preston Dibble, Peggy Evans, Gary Garletts, Greg Gyllsdorff, Mark King, Rachel Spry Lammi, John Walker, and Brenda Weiser.
