Pastor’s column

Impossibilities can happenI remember hearing the newsand having my heart sink.Jeanie asked the doctor if itwere possible for us to have anymore children, and the doctorsaid that due to the medicationthere was no chance of us everhaving children again. Jeaniewas devastated, but she walkedout of that doctor’s office withher head held high. Why?Because the Lord had already

blessed us with Clayton. Over the course of a fewyears we would talk about adoption or fosteringchildren, but with the military moving us every fewyears there was a lot of uncertainty; the one thing thatwas certain, was that Jeanie would never give birthagain.

Flash forward to just last year and discovering thatJeanie was pregnant with the beautiful baby thatwould become Rhett, and our world changeddramatically. Though there were concerns along theway, every test turned out positive, and every examcame back with flying colors. There was one thing wewere certain of: Jeanie was going to give birth again!

In life there are many paths we can walk. There aremany decisions we can make, and with each decisionthe path changes. Sometimes in life the path seemsdark, muddy, or scary, and sometimes you are toldthat there are impossibilities ahead. Regardless of thepath that you are on, there is one thing that is certain:God is with you. God promised that He would neverleave us or forsake us, all we have to do is look toHim. Bad news comes, be it the inability to havechildren, a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, cancer, illness, and disease, financial troubles, and loss of jobs, all ofthese and so much can make our path look dark anddreary; but fear not, for the Lord is still in control.

Jeremiah 29:11“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares theLord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

BBC Offering Goal: $2,000

Each year, we honor the life and advocacy of AnnieWalker Armstrong (1850-1938) when we give to theAnnie Armstrong Easter Offering® for NorthAmerican missions. As a tireless servant of God anda contagious advocate and supporter of missionsefforts throughout the world, Annie Armstrong ledwomen to unite in missions endeavors that ultimatelyled to the formation of Woman’s Missionary Union.

Annie believed in and followed Christ with all herheart, but it was her hands that expressed that beliefin tangible ways. She spent a great amount of timetyping and handwriting letters in support of missions.Annie also never hesitated to use her hands to reachout to hug a child or distribute food, clothing and theWord of God to those in need. Her hands held herown Bible as she studied to know how best to shareGods love with others. And, most important, Anniewas a woman of prayer, folding her hands in prayer tointercede for the missionaries and for those they werehelping discover Christ. Annie rallied churches togive more, pray more and do more for reachingpeople for Christ.

Prayer guides and offering envelopes are available.

A gifted high school football player must learn toboldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battlesracial tensions on and off the field inWOODLAWN, a moving and inspirational newfilm based on the true story of how love and unityovercame hate and division in early 1970sBirmingham, Alabama.

Tony Nathan (newcomer Caleb Castille) lands ina powder keg of anger and violence when he joinsfellow African-American students at WoodlawnHigh School after its government-mandateddesegregation in 1973. The Woodlawn Colonelsfootball team is a microcosm of the problems atthe school and in the city, which erupts in crossburnings and riots, and Coach Tandy Gerelds (NicBishop) is at a loss to solve these unprecedentedchallenges with his disciplinarian ways.

It’s only when Hank (Sean Astin), an outsider whohas been radically affected by the message of hopeand love he experienced at a Christian revivalmeeting, convinces Coach Gerelds to let himspeak to the team that something truly remarkablebegins to happen. More than 40 players, nearly theentire team, black and white, give their lives overto the “better way” Hank tells them is possiblethrough following Jesus, and the change is soprofound in them it affects their coach, theirschool and their community in ways no one couldhave imagined.

Much has been written about younger adults and theirdeparture from church involvement. Concerned parentsand church leaders want to know what has caused themto depart. Instead of asking why young adults areleaving the church, Dr. Steve Parr and Dr. Tom Critesconducted a national research project of those whogrew up in church and are still serving faithfully. Theirfocus was on why they have stayed. The results arecompelling. You will learn as a parent, pastor, orchurch leader specific actions that you can take to makea definite difference in whether or not the fifteen-year-olds attending your church now are still attending andserving when they turn thirty.
