Distance LearningDeciphered

Ashley Johnson, M.Ed.,

Distance LearningCoordinator, NWRPCA

I consider myself a "digitalnative." That might be a term thatis unfamiliar to you. Do the words

distance learning, e-learning,online learning, m-learning, Web

2.0, webcast, webinar,screencast, podcast, vodcast,

wiki, asynchronous,synchronous, hybrid make your

head spin? You may be a "digitalimmigrant" in our current

technology revolution, but thatdoes not mean you should hold

yourself back from theopportunities that distance

learning is offering.

Distance learning has beenaround for over 100 years in theform of correspondence courses.

Since then, it has adapted tomany forms: radio, television,

webcasts, and full-fledged onlinecourses. Online educational

offerings are exploding in count,so it can be difficult for a personto know what is worthwhile andwhat to ignore. The top threequestions I am asked about

distance learning are:

What is it?Is it effective?

How do I find qualityofferings?
