WHAT’S HAPPENING 2019 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction: May 6-10, 2019

Each May, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) holds events for the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in the Construction Industry. Falls are still the leading cause of death in the construction industry – they can and should be prevented. During the last decade in Michigan, over 100 workers have died from falls. Recently, the number of fatalities from falls was 22 in 2016, 16 in 2017, and 7 in 2018. Of these 45 fatalities, 23 occurred in construction, with the highest risk jobs being roofer, construction laborer, and carpenter.

MIOSHA kick off National Safety Stand-Down Week at Michigan Central Station in Detroit.

MIOSHA began the Stop Falls. Save Lives. Campaign in 2017. Since then, MIOSHA has had a State Emphasis Program in effect which has led to hundreds of inspections. Fall protection violations in the Construction Division continue to be amongst the “Top Ten” violations for MIOSHA each year. During the week of May 6-10, 2019, MIOSHA will be participating in 12 Stand-Down events across the state. events are required to be this extravagant. Your employer can perform a Stand-Down event by simply taking some time at coffee break and/or lunch break to address the employees about the fall protection rules, proper equipment, importance of fall protection, and means for employees to discuss any issues they have encountered. MIOSHA encourages employers to seek assistance with all compliance issues but especially fall protection. MIOSHA has non-enforcement resources through their Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division. CET can be reached at 517-284-7720. To see a list of Stand-Down events in Michigan, click HERE. MIOSHA Celebrates Graduates of Training Institute at Statewide Safety Conference in Grand Rapids MIOSHA and Macomb Community College (MCC) recognized graduates of the MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI) at the 89th annual Michigan Safety Conference in Grand Rapids on April 16, 2019. MIOSHA and MCC have partnered on the MTI since 2007. This year’s ceremony recognized 30 graduates of the program. To date, 28,769 people have participated in MTI training.

MTI graduates with MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman.

The MTI delivers affordable, participant-driven and informative seminars based on the most up-to-date industry standards. Students attend a series of courses that will help them develop the knowledge and skills to improve their companies’ safety and health system. MCC’s Public Service Institute (PSI) administers the MTI. The PSI educates students and working professionals for positions of responsibility and leadership in public service that includes police, fire, emergency medical services, and industrial health and safety training. MCC is one of the nation’s leading community colleges, providing learning experiences to more than 48,000 students annually. Macomb nationally ranks in the top two percent in the number of associate degrees awarded. To learn more, visit www.macomb.edu.

The 2019 Spring and Summer MTI schedule is available HERE.

MIOSHA also provides scholarships to those interested in attending the MTI to help with the cost of tuition. Click HERE to learn more about obtaining a scholarship to participate in the program.

If you have any questions about the MTI or workplace safety and health, please contact the Consultation Education and Training Division at 517-284-7720.
