Understanding Bullying ndash For youngpeople and what to do Bullying involves one or more peoplerepeatedly and deliberately doingthings to make another person upsetafraid or hurt It often has to do withpower that one person has oversomeone else and the use of hurtfulwords or action to bully them We as aCatholic Hills Community want to beclear that Bullying is not just lsquoplayingaroundrsquo ndash it can really affect someonersquosfeelings and emotions Bullying can take place just aboutanywhere including the schoolyardclassroom on the way tofrom schoolonline by phone at home and at workndash basically any place that young peoplemay attend Bullying can come in manyforms For example bullying caninclude physical verbal and socialaggression and it can be either face-to-face or online (cyberbullying) This typeof bullying can be anonymous andposted online where it can be seen bylots of people Unlike face to facebullying cyberbullying can go on 24hours a day 7 days a week so peopledonrsquot get a rest from it Unfortunately bullying is common witharound 1 in 6 Australian schoolstudents aged 7 to 17 reporting theyhave been bullied at least once a weekThe Collegersquos has a shared CommunityCommitment which clearly emphasisesthat respectful relationships are at theessence of being able to feeling safeloved and supported Behaviour thatcauses emotional harm to anotherregardless of the intent is contrary tomaintaining respectful relationships Itmust be identified as damaging andinappropriate and the owner of thebehaviour be given the opportunity tomake it STOP once aware of thenegative impact it is having Can Iplease ask that you speak with yourchildren about how school life is goingall of the time and if at any time there isany type of bullying taking place theCollege is contacted so that supportcan be arranged and we can enact ourPersonal Responsibility Procedures asthe safety and care of all students isour number one priority

The Year 12 cohort just completed theirtwo night Year 12 Retreat which washeld at the Encounters ConferenceCentre at Victor Harbor The theme wasbased on our 2018 Heart Value ofJustice and used the scripturequote Maintain justice and do what isright (Isaiah 561) The Retreat tookthe students on a journey ofdiscovery focusing on who they are inthe context of themselves others andGod The students undertook a balanceof activities including reflectionsessions beach activities times ofinput and story Year 12 Retreats areoften spoken about with fondness atthe Graduation of Year 12 cohorts and Ifeel that this will not be an exceptionThe students are to be commended onthe positive way that they engaged withthe activities on the Retreat It isevident that each of them has grownpersonally and deepened relationshipswith each other and for some withGod I believe that this experiencehas helped to bond the cohort build aculture of support and trust amongstthem I sincerely thank the staff whoattended the Retreat in someform especially those who attended forthe full duration of the Retreat andspent time away from their families todo so They are Jacob Robson ZonyaGrear Jacqui Rehn SyamalaGovender Sam Sasche and RoseHood Oreste Farrugia APRIM

USA Basketball Trip

USA Basketball T rip What an amazing experience it was forour Basketball Academy StudentsTaking in the sights of the West Coastof the USA and playing against some ofthe best High Schools in the countryour students definitely received anexperience of a life time Both of our boysrsquo teams had somegreat success winning 6 of their 7games each Our Girls team came upagainst some really strong oppositionand had to deal with some slow startsbut managed to walk away with 4 winsfrom their 7 games Off court we managed to take in anNBA Game College Menrsquos andWomenrsquos Games do on College Tourssee a College Football ChampionshipGame and many other Tourist activities

This term there are new expectationsregarding the use of technology If anystudents have homework requiring the useof their device they may do so at thehomework table All devices must be putaway once homework is completed Every Friday afternoon will be ourtechnology day so if a child has theirdevice they may use it for 30 minutes forsome free time New parents please to bring your childrsquosimmunisation record on their first day ofOSHC If this cannot be located or yourchild is not immunised please be aware ifthere is an outbreak of something yourchild may not to attend OSHC until theoutbreak has cleared

OSHC may also be used for ongoing careor sessions as they are needed We havea wide range of activities on the programfrom art and craft physical play gamescooking activities and heaps more If thereis an activity you would like us to programto help settle your child in on their first
