Dear Friends,

Rajasthan, with its several kingdoms, its spectacular landscapes, and the exotic brilliance of its costumes, is one of the most attractive parts of India. Its main cities—Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur—offer fascinating palace museums as well as picturesque town centers, amazing shopping, and a wide variety of colorful sites.

Then there are the hotels. In Jaipur and Jodhpur, they are converted palaces; in all three cities, they reach a high degree of luxury combined with an appealing sense of local décor. As for the cuisine, whether European or Indian, its quality is an important part of the daily pleasures. Of course, there is always the possibility of a traffic jam caused by an abundance of camel carts—all the better for us to see the drivers’ colorful turbans.

This special trip, however, also has exceptional private visits to the non-public areas of the maharajas’ palaces. There will be receptions, just for us. In Jaipur we will dine in the ruler’s private wing of the palace; in Udaipur and Jodhpur, we will also be received by the maharajas in parts of the

palaces that are not open to the public; in Delhi and Jaipur dinners at interesting private houses will give us a feel for today’s India. We will see what most travelers can only imagine and meet the former rulers who, although India is a republic, have lost none of their glamour.

I have designed this very special trip to a country I love and to cities I know well. Because the number of participants is limited to no more than twenty-five, I urge you to reserve early.

With all best regards,

Olivier Bernier

January 10 NEW YORK Sunday Depart New York on an overnight flight to Delhi.

January 11 DELHI Monday Arrive in the late evening in Delhi and transfer to the luxurious Leela Palace Hotel,

unquestionably the best in the city.

January 12 DELHI Tuesday The morning and lunch are at leisure. In the afternoon see Humayun’s Tomb, the first

of the great Mughal imperial tombs, and the National Museum, housing an excellent collection of Indian art. Gather this evening for welcome remarks by Olivier Bernier, followed by dinner at the hotel.

January 13 DELHI Wednesday Over the last thousand years, Delhi has been the capital of seven empires, and there are

traces of its Hindu, Muslim, and British builders throughout the city. Today, Delhi consists of the 17th- to 19th-century Old Delhi and the newer sections constructed from 1913 to 1931 under the supervision of British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. This morning we will explore Old Delhi, including the impressive Jama Masjid, built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan. Following lunch at the hotel, the afternoon is free for relaxation or shopping. This evening we will celebrate the advent of spring in north India as we dine in a private home. Our host’s grandfather was the contractor hired by the British to build New Delhi.

January 14 DELHI / AGRA Thursday Drive to Agra, arriving at the elegant Oberoi Amarvilas Hotel in time for lunch and check-in.

The hotel features splendid views of the Taj Mahal, the consummate symbol of India that was built between 1632 and 1648 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife. We will visit this iconic site as the sun sets. Dinner is at leisure.

January 15 AGRA Friday Discover the jewel-like tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, begun in 1622 for the Emperor

Jahangir’s father-in-law. The model for the Taj Mahal, its colored marbles make it one of the most sumptuous buildings in India. We will also visit the 16th-century Red Fort, encompassing the imperial city of the Mughal rulers and containing many palaces and two mosques. Return to the hotel for lunch and a free afternoon, with an option to visit the Mehtab Bagh gardens. Dinner is at a Northwest frontier restaurant famous for its slow-cooked lamb.

January 16 AGRA / JAIPUR Saturday Early risers may wish to experience the Taj Mahal at sunrise, followed by breakfast at the

hotel. Then depart for Fatehpur Sikri, Emperor Akbar’s glorious and deserted 16th-century city of red sandstone. After lunch, continue to Jaipur. Arrive in the late afternoon at the deluxe Oberoi Rajvilas, where we will stay for three nights.

January 17 JAIPUR Sunday Jaipur was founded in the 18th century by the great ruler and astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh

II. The delicate hue of its buildings has given it the name “Pink City.” Begin at the hilltop Amber Fort, a dream of white marble overlooking the countryside. Built in the 17th century to rival the Mughal Palaces, its mirror-incrusted halls and private gardens show just how refined these Mughal-inspired palaces could be. Walk through the glittering halls and marvel at the views over the surrounding hills. The afternoon is at leisure to visit textile and jewelry shops for which Jaipur is famous. This evening enjoy cocktails and dinner with a member of the royal family at the City Palace (subject to final confirmation).

January 18 JAIPUR Monday Return to the City Palace this morning, where we explore the extensive collection of art and

heirlooms. We will also tour the intriguing UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jantar Mantar Observatory, constructed during Jai Singh II’s rule. In the afternoon walk through the colorful market. Dinner will be a special experience at a private home.

January 19 JAIPUR / JODHPUR Tuesday Depart for Jodhpur, the ancient capital of the Mewar kingdom. Lunch is at the Umaid

Bhawan Palace Hotel, a royal residence, where we will stay for two nights. Discover the old city on an afternoon stroll or remain at the hotel to enjoy its many amenities.

January 20 JODHPUR Wednesday Spend the morning at the Mehrangarh Fort, once the residence of the maharajas, and

today a museum of paintings, weapons, and howdahs (seats used for riding elephants). After lunch, depart in jeeps to see the Bishnoi villages outside of the city. Members of this community worship nature and practice conservation techniques in order to live in harmony with the environment. High tea will be served at sunset before returning to the hotel for a private dinner.

January 21 JODHPUR / UDAIPUR Thursday Drive past striking landscapes to Ranakpur, arriving in time for lunch. Then explore the

most beautiful Jain temple in India, built in the 15th century of white marble, with 1,444 pillars, of which no two are alike. Arrive in the early evening to Udaipur for check-in at the Udaivilas Hotel on the shores of Lake Pichola.

January 22 UDAIPUR Friday This morning tour the City Palace—actually eleven connected palaces—which includes a

superb painting gallery. After lunch, there will be free time to walk in the market. Enjoy a sunset cruise on the lake before dinner at the former residence of the Maharana of Udaipur.

January 23 UDAIPURSaturday A short drive brings us to the 11th-century temples at Nagda and the nearby Shri Eklingi

temple complex. Continue to the splendid fortress hotel Devi Garh for lunch overlooking the scenic countryside. Return to Udaipur for a festive farewell dinner.

January 24 UDAIPUR / DELHISunday Depart this morning for the airport and the flight to Delhi, where dayrooms have been

arranged at the Oberoi Gurgaon. Return to the Delhi airport later in the evening for the flight home.

January 25 NEW YORK Monday Arrive back in New York today.
