Hiking tourismThere is no better way to learn about naturethan staying in close touch with it. This is alsothe way of restoring our vitality, relaxing andreloading batteries. Hiking tourism provides uswith all those experiences and even more.Following a tourist trail and visiting historicalmonuments gives us a feeling of satisfaction andevokes respect; sometimes it becomes an adven-ture and a good opportunity for integration,especially for school youth. The Âwi´tokrzyskiRegion offers 1,500 kilometers of hiking trails,available for junior and senior hikers, and allthose who love excitement of adventure andexploration.Very interesting is the Edmund Massalski trail(Go∏oszyce – Kuêniaki, red markings, 105 km)that runs through the very heart of the GóryÂwi´tokrzyskie (Holy Cross Mountains). Itleads hikers to Mt Âwi´ty Krzy˝. In the areaone can visit the Natural History Museum,mysterious go∏oborza (boulder fields), and thesanctuary with relics of the Holy Cross.Farther on, the trail brings tourists to Mt¸ysica, the highest peak in the Âwi´tokrzyskieMountains, and Âwi´ta Katarzyna with itsBernardine convent.Equally interesting is the popular with youthSylwester Kowalczewski trail (20 km) that runsfrom Chćiny, a small town at the foot of a hilltopped by a ruined castle (13th c.), Jaskinia Raj(Paradise Cave) to Mt Karczówka. It is often called a Âwi´tokrzys-ki steppe and adds to the diversity of the region-al landscape.This area is criss-crossed by some of the low-land trails. “The Trail of Sacral TimberArchitecture along the Maskalis Stream” fea-tures St Leonard’s Church in Busko-Zdrój andSt Stanislas’ Church in Chotelek. The blue trailleads from Piƒczów known as SarmatianAthens, Poland’s major Reformation center, toWiÊlica that witnessed the activities of Europe’spatrons, SS Cyril and Methodius. Cycling toursThe Âwi´tokrzyski Region offers 2,000 kilome-ters of marked paths and trails to enthusiasts ofrecreational biking. The trails lead through themost attractive natural and cultural parts of thevoivodship.The red trail – “Through Forests around theW∏oszczowa Commune” – features many rest-ing spots with umbrella roofs and bonfire sites.It begins near the Konieczno forester’s housewhere an educational path (Poznajmy Las), for-est nursery, and a room of sylvicultural educa-tion were set up. Information boards describingregional fauna and flora were posted on the ini-tiative of local foresters. Another red trail –“Across the Âwi´tokrzyskie Mountains” – leadsthrough the ranges of Mas∏ów, Klonów and apart of the ¸ysogóry range. In addition toattractive landscape, visitors can admire castleruins in Bodzentyn, Museum of AncientMetallurgy in Nowa S∏upia, and a Romanesquecollegiate church in Opatów. The “RoundStarachowice” trail will take you to theMuseum of Natural History and Technology inStarachowice, the famous Cistercian abbey inWàchock, and the Wykus forest reserve in theSieradowicki Landscape Park. Fans of natureand sacral architecture will enjoy the “DoPodzamcza Piekoszowskiego” trail leading tothe monastic complex in Karczówka, Mariansanctuary in Piekoszów, palatial ruins inPodzamcze Piekoszowskie as well as to thereserve of various karstic formations known asthe Cholesiowa Jama. The trail “TouringHistorical Monuments of Technology in theKamienna River Valley” is a part of the OldPolish Industrial Center. It leads from Skar˝ysko

Kamienna via Starachowice to OstrowiecÂwi´tokrzyski, and includes such sites as theWhite Eagle Museum in the Rejów quarter ofSkar˝ysko Kamienna, sanctuary in Ka∏ków-Godów, and a china museum in åmielów. The cycling “Trail of Defensive Architecture”takes us to many regional fortifications, castlesand palaces. We start from the Sobków strong-hold and continue through numerous historicalmonuments in the Piƒczów area to arrive toM∏odzawy Ma∏e and Ogród na Rozstajach in thePonidzie region, an ideal spot for a pause amidstfloral arrangements and exotic birds. The palacein Chrobrze and the legendary town of WiÊlicaare our next destinations. A rest in the peacefulspa of Busko-Zdrój will be a real reward for thestrains of this long but attractive trip. The pilgrimage cycling trail – “Spiritual EnergySites” – leads to the major places of religiouscult such as Âwi´ty Krzy˝, Pustelnia Z∏otegoLasu in Rytwiany, WiÊlica, Piotrkowice, andKa∏ków-Godów. It includes churches inSandomierz and sanctuaries after the Kielceregion.Thematic trails running through the Ponidzieregion constitute an interesting offer for fans ofactive rest. The history of the region is present-ed through references to sacral and lay build-ings as well as to different wayside shrines andfigures. There are not only royal, timber andmasonry trails, but also trails for herbalists andadmirers of wayside shrines and figures. It’s inPiƒczów that the trail of Spiritual Energy Sitesjoins the local section known as the “Madonnasof the Ponidzie Region”, which leads throughmultiple Marian cult locations.Setting up a Berlin – Lviv transvoivodshipcycling trail is an important international ven-

ture. It was joined by Âwi´tokrzyskie, Lubuskie,Wielkopolskie, ¸ódzkie and Podkarpackievoivodships. The Âwi´tokrzyskie voivodshipsection runs through the poviats of Koƒskie,Skar˝ysko Kamienna, Starachowice, OstrowiecÂwi´tokrzyski and Sandomierz.


Not only biking along trails, but also differentcycling events make part of cycling tourism.One of the best known annual racing events isorganized in Sielpia in September and is knownas the Marathon eXtreme. The Âwi´tokrzyskieAssociation of Mountain Biking (MTB) inKielce as well as the MTB Cross promotecycling through the organization of marathons,racing competitions, sports sections, and bymeans of spreading knowledge about road traf-fic safety.

Car & Motorcycle toursThose who travel by car can choose theÂwi´tokrzyski Literary Trail or the Trail ofTimber Architecture. They are sign-posted bydirection boards located by main-roads and bydescription boards on sites.The Âwi´tokrzyski Literary Trail will take youthrough the most spectacular parts of the regiondescribed by Polish writers who placed plots orbackground of their literary works in the capti-vating landscape of the Âwi´tokrzyski andPonidzie Regions. Some of them were born hereor lived and worked in the region. In additionto their posthumous works, their legacy oftenincludes manor houses that contain valuablelibraries, souvenirs brought from exotic jour-neys and family mementos.The Âwi´tokrzyski Literary Trail can be dividedinto three separate routes leading through thePonidzie, Sandomierz and OstrowiecÂwi´tokrzyski, and Kielce regions. They are alldotted with cultural gems: Miko∏aj Rej’s manorin Nag∏owice with the great poet’s remem-brance room; the regional museum in Piƒczówwith mementos left by Adolf Dygasiƒski,earnest lover of the Ponidzie region; JanD∏ugosz House in Sandomierz sheltering collec-tions of the Diocesan Museum; HenrykSienkiewicz’s manor in Obl´gorek, once thewriter’s summer residence, now functioning asthe Henryk Sienkiewicz Museum; or theMuseum of Stefan ˚eromski’s School Days.The Âwi´tokrzyski Trail of Timber Architectureis an extension of the national trail that featuresthe major treasures of Poland’s timber architec-ture and runs through the voivodships ofPodkarpacie, Ma∏opolska and Silesia. sacral and lay wooden constructions in theÂwi´tokrzyski Region are very well preserved,including such buildings as St Stephen’s church(18th c.) with its wooden belfry and rococointerior in Mnichów; a cottage (19th c.) inKakonin; a Czernikiewicze family farm inBodzentyn, or manors, churches, blacksmith’sworkshops, and country houses with typicalfacilities gathered in the skansen of Kielce vil-lage in Tokarnia.The Âwi´tokrzyski Literary Trail and the Trail ofTimber Architecture provide a rich tourist offerfor all those who enjoy country touring and cul-tural entertainment.


Those who like feeling adrenaline mounting upare welcome to try the racing track ofMiedziana Góra, which is a constituent of themoto-raj (motor-paradise) sports and touristcenter. Guest can be accommodated in a motelor a campsite. The rich rest, recreation, sportsand training program includes periodical sportsand proficiency events, driving contests and carracing, go-cart rides, and training in drivingskills and road breakdown assistance.Fans of go-carting can use a racing track (800m); car drivers have a small loop (1,140 m) attheir disposal as well as a repair workshop forfour vehicles.

Horse ridingIn the Âwi´tokrzyski Region there are profes-sional equestrian centers that offer riding les-sons, cross-country rides and hippotherapy.The palatial complex in Kurozw´ki and theSobków stronghold offer tourist programs thatinclude britzka rides and sleighing cavalcades withtorches in wintertime. Many agrotourist farms inthe region try to enrich their tourist through plandirect contact with horses, horse riding lessonsand cross-country rides offering. Horse Land – equestrian center in Ba∏tówThe center is located on the Kamienna Riverwaterfront and near the Ba∏towski Jurassic Park.There are two maneges with sandy ground and acompetition ring for those who wish to learnjumping over obstacles. Water TourismThere are many ways of spending leisure timeon or near water. In the present chapter youwill find the presentation of the most popularand best-equipped swimming pools, waterreservoirs and rivers of the Âwi´tokrzyskiRegion as well as an offer of diving schools andkayaking trips organizers.The Chaƒcza artificial lake (470 hectares) wascreated on the Czarna Staszowska river. Sielpia is a summer holiday spot located nearthe artificial lake created on the CzarnaKonecka river. There are a few dozen holidaycenters situated in the pine forest surroundingthe lake. They offer accommodation in summerhuts or on bivouac fields as well as such watersports gear for rent as kayaks, water bikes, androwing or sailing boats. The artificial lake on the Kamionka river is notfar from Suchedniów. The local rest and recre-ation center offers accommodation in summerhuts and on camping site. There are some indoor swimming pools in theregion that are to be recommended. Theswimming pool center Rawszczyzna inOstrowiec Âwi´tokrzyski has two swimmingpools: one for recreational use and anotherone that meets Olympic requirements. There isalso a sauna, fitness center and possibilities ofpracticing aerobic and aqua-aerobic. Per∏a is the name of a nice indoor swimmingpool complex in Nowiny near Kielce. The two-basin swimming pool is also used for underwa-ter massages. There is also a sliding pipe, saunaand solarium. Other tourist attractions in thearea include the Paradise Cave and ruins of theChćiny castle.

Winter SportsIn wintertime the slopes of the region offerexcellent conditions for enthusiasts of activerest, including skiing. There are ski-lifts in suchlocalities as Kielce, Tumlin, Krajne-Zagórze,Niestachów, Wide∏ki, Machocice, Bodzentyn,and Ba∏tów. As the slopes are of different diffi-culty and length, they are adequate for begin-ners and experienced skiers as well as for fans ofsnowboarding. Mosts of the slopes areequipped with snow cannons and electric light-ing. There are also catering facilities, sports gearrental centers and ski-schools. Those who optfor longer stays will find comfortable accom-modations, ranging from youth hostels androoms on agrotourist farms to regular hotels ofquite good standard.

Kielce – Mt Telegraf (406 m)Skiers can enjoy the slope (40 m wide, 500 mlong) equipped with a double T-bar, verysteep in places and representing a differenceof levels of 100 meters. Nearby is a small ski-lift for children and beginners (180 m long,difference of levels 30 m). The slope hassnow-making and lighting facilities and iswell-prepared by snow-grooming machines.Ski-service and ski rental center is locatednear the lower station that also has a restau-rant and a large car park.

Kielce – Mt PierÊcienica (367 m)Here the slope (500 m long, 22-50 m wide,difference of levels 59 m) is also equippedwith a double T-bar, electric lighting, snow-making facilities and maintained in goodshape by snowcats. A bar, ski-service, ski-

FarmsThere are many agrotourist farms in theÂwi´tokrzyski Region, but the Agroklub andAgro-Turbo farms are really very well suited forintensive forms of active rest.For example, the Agroklub offers tours on four-wheel motorcycles around the Suchedniów-Obl´gorek Landscape Park, paintball games,and air-gun shooting. There is also a fitnesscenter and a sauna. The hosts organize banquetsand bonfires, trainings and conferences as wellas integration meetings and incentive events. “Ifyou seek adventure, come to our place” is theirmotto.

Speleology – Exploration

of CavesSo far more than 130 caves have been discov-ered in the Âwi´tokrzyski Region. Speleologistsand enthusiasts of cave exploration are wel-come to our caves, wells and tunnels.In the locality of Jaworznia, ten kilometers westof Kielce, is the largest cave of the whole regionknown as Cholesiowa Jama or JaskiniaJaworznicka (3,670 m long). It ranks ninth on thelist of Poland’s longest caves and is available onlyfor scientific exploration. The major touristattraction of the region is the Paradise Cave(Jaskinia Raj, 180 m long) near Chćiny. Somefinds from the cave which are on display showthat it was once used by animals (mammoth, cavebear, woolly rhinoceros) and primitive humans.The Âwi´tokrzyski Speleological Club associatesvery knowledgeable and experienced speleolo-gists and mountain climbers. Air Sports

There are two air centers in the Âwi´tokrzyskiRegion: the Kielce Aeroclub in Mas∏ów and anaeroclub in Piƒczów. The airport in Mas∏ów wasbuilt in 1937. At present its runway made ofasphaltic concrete is 900 m long and 30 m wide.There is also a grassy airstrip measuring 900 mx 200 m.Membership of the aeroclub is available forpilots of airplanes, gliders, ultralight trikes, andparachutists. It organizes courses in three sec-tions that form future pilots of airplanes, glidersand parachutists. The section of ultralightplanes and trikes operates on the basis of pri-vately owned crafts and organizes courses with-in the framework of private initiative.The aeroclub organizes contests for parachutistsand gliders and participates in national andinternational competitions. For many years theparachute section has been organizing theRegional Contest for Parachute Jumpers for theCup of Kielce Mayor.

Air flying traditions of Piƒczów date back to1937 and are connected with the operation ofthe Polichno-Piƒczów School of Gliding. TennisTwenty rest and recreation centers in theÂwi´tokrzyskie voivodship have tennis courts. In the health resort of Busko-Zdrój tenniscourts are located in the spa park and on thepremises of some sanatoriums, for example,W∏ókniarz and Nida-Zdrój, which makes themeven more attractive for guests who come toseek health restoration and good looks.Tennis courts are also available in the followinglocalities: Koƒskie (Stadium), Nag∏owice(Elementary School), O˝arów (ul. AnglingThe environmental condition of the Âwi´to-krzyskie Region is very good due to relatively lowpollution of its air, rivers and other water bodies aswell as to the existance of large forest expansesand grasslands inhabited by many animal species.The region’s unspoilt nature and such rivers asthe Vistula, Pilica, Kamienna, Nida and Czarnaas well as natural ponds, artificial water reser-voirs and lakes create a real paradise for anglers.The Chaƒcza artificial lake (470 hectares) in theRaków commune set up on the Czarna Staszowskariver abounds in carp, pike-perch, perch, bream,grass carp and other species. Rock ClimbingThe best conditions for rock climbing in theÂwi´tokrzyski Region are found in the area ofKadzielnia, Góra Zelejowa, Stokówka,Ciosowa, Wykieƒ, and Tumlin. Climbing routesrange from 6 to 15 meters in length and do notexceed the difficulty rate of VI.4. It is howeverof utmost importance to check if you are noton the nature protected territory and if theobject itself is not a monument of inanimatenature.Experienced members of the Âwi´tokrzyskiAlpine Club of Kielce provide informationabout possibilities of practicing rock climbing inthe region and about safety facilities on climb-ing routes. The club organizes national compe-titions in winter rock climbing, rock climbingcourses, demonstrations of mountain rescuetechniques, collection of wastes within theframework of the International Earth Day, ropegames for children, and cooperates with the“I’ve Got a Dream Foundation”. It’s certainlyworth an effort to consult expert climbers ofthe club in order to minimize hazards of rockclimbing exploits.Bouldering or climbing man-made walls withoutany rope safety protection is also very popular.There are some man-made walls available, but inthe Âwi´tokrzyski Region bouldering can bepracticed on natural ascents as well. Convenientconditions for that style of climbing are offeredby Brody I∏˝eckie near Starachowice, Ska∏aNihilistów near åmielów or KamieƒMichniowski, which constitutes a forest naturereserve on the territory of the SieradowickiLandscape Park and therefore should be treatedwith an appropriate care and respect.
