Fund Being Rais Wilhelm Gericke, who gave thirtec of the best years of his life to musi in this country as conductor of th Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1880 to 1889 and 1897 to 1006, is now, it is reported, at the age of seventy-seven living in Vienna in straitened financial circumstances, since v_.ost of his sav¬ ings have been swept away by the war and the depreciation of Austrian value«. A conductors' committee to assist in collecting funds for their colleague has been formed by Walter Damrosch, who will act as treasurer, with Leopold Stokowski, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Pierre Monteux, Frederick Stock, Artur Bo- danzky and Alfred Hertz. America owes much to Mr. Gericke and his ministrations as a musician, and his gentleness and modesty won him many friends. It is intolerable to think that owing to the results of the war such a man should not be able to live the remaining years his life in reasonable comfort. Pierre Monteux will conduct at the evening concert Berlioz's "Fantastic" Symphony, two descriptive pieces of the late Charles T. Griffes, "Clouds" and "The White Peacock"; Vaughan Williams'! fantasia for string orches¬ tra on a theme by Thpmas Tallis, and Glazounoff's symphonic poem, "Ste'-.ka Razin." For the matinee the symphony will be the fourth of Brahms in E miner. Strauas's tone poem, "Thus Spake Znra- thustra," will also be played. The ether number will be "Horace Vic¬ torieux," by Honneger, a member of the Parisian "Six." This score is en¬ titled "A Mimed Symphony," and al¬ though played in London and Paris is on this occasion to have its first American performance. -%.- Cleveland Orchestra To Be Supported by Popular Fund The Cleveland Orchestra, Nikolai So- koloff, conductor, has received from the people of Cleveland a maintenance fund of $200,000 for the season of 1922-'23, wiping out the anticipated deficit in the annual budget, 808 sub¬ scribers to this fund, 600 of them being new, contributing sums ranging from |6 to $80,000, fifty of whom have made their gifts annual pledges. This has been accomplished by a special busi- | ness men's committee of one hundred, headed by Dudley S. Blossom, exeeu- I tive vice-president and treasurer of the Magical Arts Association, without re- sorting to an expensive publicity cam¬ paign, all newspaper work being done in the Cleveland Orchestra business office by the regular staff. Philadelphia Orchestra Jaan Gerardy will be the soloist at the Philadelphia Orchestra concert Tuesday evening at Carnegie Hall, giv¬ ing a first American hearing to Ed¬ ward Elgar's concerto for violoncello and orchestra. Written during the summer of 1919, it was given for the first time by the London Symphony Or¬ chestra at Queen's Hall, October 27, 1619, with Elgar conducting and Felix Salmond as soloist. Thorndike, an Amer¬ ican born in Paris, is having an ex¬ hibition at the Kingoro gallery. He has passed through a varied artistic experience. He has ftudied at Julien's. Ho has felt the influence of Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He has dipped Into the impressionism of Monet ami he has been attracted by Cezanne. It is the last mentioned, wc surmise, who has given him his point of departure for the landscapes and pictures of buildings in the present exhibition. H. F. Waltman, in his Prospect Park fountain, paints a crystalline, sunny atmosphère. Gothold's deep, shadowy symphony, "Aftermath." Among the sculpture are Mahonri Young's laugh- Alexander and the Wife of Darius (Frotn the. painting by Tiepoio, at the Reinhardt gallery) manner and paint her in simple masses of deep tone it has done bitn good. But he has not yet arrived.at a con¬ clusive solution of his problems, he has not yet achieved a style. Ilia drawing is .crude. His color la with¬ out c'.iarm. We feel in his work a promising disposition to compos«; a picture rather broadly And handsome- ly. We do not feel that he has got interesting design really under con¬ trol. Further training would, doubt¬ less, be beneficial to that rude force which he undoubtedly possesses. When Mr. Russell Cheney had his first exhibition at the Babcock gallery a year ago he made it plain at once that he had talent. But there was a good deal that was crude about the affair. Now he appears again at the same place and leaves almost if not quite the same impression. He has not gone backward, but neither has he gone forward. We suspect now, ns we suspected then, that he works toe hastily, Over and over again he sh-owf us the makings of a good paintinf rather than the painting itself. Th- "Orpheus" is a case in point. Th« composition is happy. This still lif« very nearly comes off. Unfortunately it just misses. The best things in th« exhibition are either the big land ¡scapes like the "Skungimaug.Morn ing," or tho mere sketches like "Coop' I Sawmill." Between these two extreme i of ambition and casual, spontaneou playing with paint, there are too man works which start out to be full dres pictures and end by remaining splash sketches, motiveless and uninteresi ing. The many friends of Joseph 3 Camp will be glad to hear that he rapidly recovering from the long i ness which terminated recently in major operation, He is thorough convalescent and will soon be at wo again. Paintings and sculpture by twelve men and women, including several modernists, are being shown at the School of.-Design and Liberal Arts. The names are Alger, Brodsky, Field, Gay- lor, Laurent, Miller, Mege, Nicolaide*. Tannehill, Scott and Wesselhoeft | George 0. Hart's water colors of the tropics are also being shown, Eloquent and spontaneous sketches from his notebook are the little series of crayon drawings by Homer D. Mar¬ tin shown side by side at the Ferargil Studio, 24 East Forty-ninth Street, They are merest fragments.a moun- tainscape touched for accentuation with a sweep of white chalk, a tree gilded creek in fine suggested detail, a river camp and a rowboat, with reclin¬ ing figures, riding listlessly on the tide. They are but notes, to be sure, but masterly in their conception and econ¬ omy of line. Fanny Willcox Brown has here also a series of needlepoint dec¬ orations, They are fantastic and have a relationship to the sampler, with all the hitter's quaintness and naivete One is a Noah's Ark representation, with odd figures and animals worked in j colored thread. Another is called the "Happy Prince," after that legend, and there is a large centerpiece woven with medallions depicting "Saints and Mar¬ tyrs." Charles Morris Young is not alone content with painting exquisitely the romance and color of the fox hunt, but he invests these subjects with a back- ground that would do credit to many avowed workers in landscape alone. He is fundamentally an artist, an im- pressionist. How deeply apparent this is in his "Halt in the Woods." Again the rich sunlight of the Pennsylvania hills breaks upon & lively hunt meet at White Horse Tavern. The hustling hounds lose individual identity in ac¬ tive masses of broken color. The red- coated riders are up and about, and never in immediate focus. Mr. Young never, in fact, gives up to direct state¬ ments of the hunt as such. Barnard paints with con¬ siderable facility In water color and with special feeling for such subjects, as her group of "Other Little Ameri¬ cans," which include several Oriental children and a negro boy., These and n number of portraits and «till life subjects are being shown at the Browrr Robertson gallery. The latter include spirited suggestions of jades, porce¬ lains, Japanese dolls and bo forth, with an inclusion of flowers. Here the art¬ ist is surest One portrait head.a di¬ rect effort in brown wash.Is effective. A surer hand at drafting would add considerably to her merit. Ono of the largest exhibition» of the eason is that mode up of drawings in rayon by Winold Reiss and sketches >nd drawings by Clara Tice, which .olds spectacular sway at the Anderson Galleries. Mr. Reiss could tell his story well enough in twenty, instead of more than a hundred, ..xamples. He has traveled far and wide for ínter- esting and varied types, but no change of environment has affected his method, which is flat, decorative and realistic. He workn in the inflexible, unerno- tlonal style of the German tradition of a few years ago, and obtain« what subtlety he can in this way by a close shading rather- than expressiveness of line. Mexico, Sweden, Bavaria and other climes have yielded to a healthy yearning for expressive character. The most pictorial ho found in Sweden, where color, costume and blossoming beauty were warmly receptive to his crayon. The Oberammergau players gave him rugged, inspirational person¬ alities to deal with. But unbendingly ho could give them Only that ¡sculptural expressiveness that typifies the method he uses. Miss Clara Tice, on the other hand and miles apart, is light-hearted, loves the fantastic and has a sense of humor. Her drawings-of children at play, ani- mala.-whimsical and otherwise., sketchy nudes and action pictures are all studied in gesture. They spell an alert mind, an observing eye and. a] ¡lever hand. Undoubtedly she takes j ibis work to heart, though her ap- proacb to it is essentially superficial. Many of her animals reflect the whimsy one finds in children's story books. That is their intent. Others have a more serious intent, but as studies animal nature they lack anatomical ex¬ pression. Her pen sketches are vola¬ tile and spontaneous. There is a cer. tain fine rhythm about all her work. Miss Tice has en ecstatic mind, and turns lightly tomany form» of exprès-, sion. _ To-morrow the Frankl gallery will open an exhibition of modern deco- I rative art, including a collection of Kaehler (Danish) ceramics. Adding to his reputation as a por¬ trait painter, Mr. J. Young-Hunter may be »een at the Montague Flagg gallery in the guise of landscapist. Since his last exhibition hero he has found time and opportunity to make several new portraits of distinction, a group of i canvases of New Mexico's landscape j and Indians, and still others of New Hampshire woodland scenes. "The Vil¬ lage of Las Cruces" and the imposing mesa "Bad Lands" find him responsive to a certain barren beauty. The in¬ tricacies of color in his mountain scen¬ ery are more puzzling and lack spon¬ taneity of expression. More at home in portraiture, he has a colorful and charming composition of three chil¬ dren. His painting of E. W. Scripps is posed with interesting informality. Cleveland Orchestra To BeSupported by Popular Fund

The Cleveland Orchestra, Nikolai So-koloff, conductor, has received from thepeople of Cleveland a maintenancefund of $200,000 for the season of1922-'23, wiping out the anticipateddeficit in the annual budget, 808 sub¬scribers to this fund, 600 of them beingnew, contributing sums ranging from|6 to $80,000, fifty of whom have madetheir gifts annual pledges.
