CALGARY EAST - REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
On August 16, 2015 a memorial was held at Calgary East Church of the Nazarene for the 11th Anniversary of the Ga-tumba Camp Massacre. Gatumba is a village on the western side of Burundi, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A significant refugee camp had been established there. On August 13, 2004, a force of armed combatants at-tacked the camp, massacred at least 166 Congolese civilians
and wounded another 106. Many of the attackers and the organizers of the attack have never been prosecuted for their actions so the call for justice echoed through the memorial service.
The sanctuary was full of men, women and children, many of whom were directly connected to people who were involved or had actually been there themselves. Several participants of the service were origi-nally from Burundi or Congo, and are now members of various congre-gations in Calgary and as far away as Edmonton. Members of our own congregation attended as well.
The service began with a time of praise and worship and was led in their native language with translators providing English. A senior pas-tor from one of their congregations preached an energetic message and expressed the hope that justice would someday be accom-plished. There were testimonies from eyewitnesses who were in the camp on that evening. Their words captured the reality and cruelty of the whole event and revealed the insidious racial and tribal nature of
the attacks. Two members of our own congregation shared their personal stories of tragedy as they lost their firstborn daughter.
A woman from Burundi gave a response, offering condolenc-es and recognition that the event happened on Burundi soil.
The evening concluded with food and fellowship downstairs.
Calgary East church is in a position to offer a place of com-fort, acceptance and healing for refugees from all parts of the world, seeking safety and a better way of life for their loved ones. It’s a privilege to walk with these people and journey with them through their grief.

CALGARY EAST - THANKS
The congregation from Calgary East church would
like to thank Canada West District for their support
this summer through the Work and Witness project. A
total of 56 people gave away part of their summer to
improve our facilities. Special thank you to the con-
gregations of Calgary First and Calgary Skyview who
brought in hearty meals for the work crews and sent
skilled volunteers to assist us. Particular recognition
must go to Richard and Pat Bahan and to Darlene Hy-
att, all of whom are energy ‘machines’ and kept the
project moving. We are in deep appreciation of the
district office and the NMI council who provided
some funding, as well as others who gave personal
donations of food, supplies and material. Our sanctu-
ary feels fresh and updated and our bathrooms are
now handicapped accessible – they smell great, they
are much easier to clean, and they are welcoming to
all. This project has needed to be done for some time.
We are a busy congregation and the building is fre-
quently booked with community and ministry groups,
but we do not have the skilled labour or the financial
resources to hire out what needed to be accomplished.
We are thrilled to be ready for company this fall! We
look forward to helping out at the next Work and Wit-
ness project.

CHURCH NEWS
CALGARY SKYVIEW
This past summer we made a transition to a new facility for our weekly worship services due
to unforeseen changes at the location we were leasing for the past ten years. Despite this
unplanned transition God has opened up the opportunity for us to meet in a public school
gymnasium located close to our future church facility site in the northwest community of
Harvest Hills. This new rental location allows us to make our presence known in the com-
munity prior to the completion of our building program and we look forward to making use
of the opportunity our new location offers us.
Though the transition to the new worship space has not been without challenge we remain
encouraged as we move ahead with our plans to build. Currently we are awaiting the city's
approval for a development permit. Our hope is to break ground prior to the winter freeze and in order to do so we
will need this development permit to be issued within the coming month. We would like to appeal to our district
family to keep us in prayer. In particular, that we will find favour with the city in our planning and building of this
new facility and that we will receive all the necessary approvals in a timely fashion. Also, keep us in prayer as we
adapt to a new community and a new worship space. It is our desire to continue to fulfill the vision God has given
us as we move closer to the completion of our own permanent worship space. Pray that God will grant us the
grace to make disciples during this time of transition.
CAMP HARMATTAN
On Tuesday, August 11, 8 women and 19 children (ranging in age
from 5 months to 14 yrs old) arrived at Harmattan. This was the
second year that we had the privilege to open our camp to women
and children from a local shelter. When it became clear that we
wouldn't be able to host family camp last summer due to the col-
lapse of the multiplex we began to dream about how we could use
the seemingly unfortunate loss of the multiplex and the opportunity to host family camp as an opportunity to bless
someone. I phoned a shelter in the area and they were excited about our idea.
Last year we had 5 families register, but 2 of the families ended up not showing up. This year we had 12 women
and 23 children register. On Monday I received an email from a caseworker informing me that she would have to
cancel for her client as she had lost contact with her client. Three other women and their children ended up not
showing up on Tuesday. Some of the women were able to drive themselves and their children to camp. Rebecca
and Maris went with Bill Young in a school bus to pick up those without transportation from the shelter.
Pastor Darlene Hyatt met with our staff to give them a brief overview of working with these women and their chil-
dren. Many of the staff expressed some level of anxiety in regards to concerns they were feeling. Over the time
that the women and children were at camp we played games, did campfires with s'mores, went tubing, climbed the
climbing wall, did archery, crafts, pampering time for the women and ended the last night with fireworks!

CAMP HARMATTAN (continued)
One of the women said that she and her cousin had hoped to take
their children on vacation over the summer but that they couldn't
afford it and that we had given them that opportunity. Another
woman talked about the loneliness that has caused her to return to
an abusive situation in the past and her fear that this could happen
again.
We had just enough tshirts leftover from our youth camps to give each of the children one. We told the moms that
we would love to have their children attend our youth camps, but we wanted to let them know that if they did
choose to send them it was important for them to know that we are a Christian camp and we do share stories from
the Bible during youth camps. The women responded that they had googled our camp before coming and that they
had been surprised and thankful that we hadn't been preaching at them. We told them that we wanted to show
them God's love rather than preaching at them.
We sent the women home with many leftovers and they expressed overwhelming gratitude for both the food and
for the time they spent at Harmattan. We are so thankful we have had the opportunity to host these women and
children both last summer and again this summer. We didn't realize when we initially began this partnership that
Alberta's family violence rate is slightly higher than the national average with approximately 290 victims per
100,000 people in 2013 and that Alberta has the second highest rate of self-reported spousal violence in the coun-
try. The shocking reality of these stats is that every hour of every day an Albertan woman will be a victim of some
form of violence by an ex-spouse or ex-partner. We know that a few days of respite and retreat at Harmattan
won't solve this issue but our hope is to continue with this partnership with this women's shelter and that God
would open doors to more opportunities.
Thank you to the Harmattan staff for being willing to serve so lovingly in spite of the anxiety they expressed at the
beginning of this retreat. Thank you to the individuals and companies that gave to help make this retreat happen.

NMI Update!
Thank you all for your generous support of mis-
sions at Harmattan Family Camp this year! To-
nya Kucey, missionary to Haiti shared passion-
ately from her heart and so many respond-
ed. Over the week we raised an NMI Deputation
for Tonya of $4,030! The children at Family
Camp raised $4,702.51 for the Haiti School
Backpacks for the Los Mamos school! The
Sedgewick church also raised another $1200+
for the children’s project bringing the total to $
5,911.55! Wow!!
Becky, the pastor’s wife from Port Orange
Church of the Nazarene in Daytona Beach, FL has graciously offered to order all the school supplies, and the
vendor companies are providing free shipping to Ft Pierce, FL. We will still be responsible for shipping from Ft
Pierce to Haiti (where the backpacks will actually be assembled) and we will not know the total of that cost until
we finalize the weight of all the school supplies. Hopefully we will have an update on that for the next Loop. If
you interested in participating in a Work and Witness project to Haiti, please email Tonya at
[email protected] and copy Carolyn Herbert at [email protected] . Tonya would love it if some of our
Canada West people could actually present the school packs to the children!

Rose Knows
Dear Rose: Our church has a substantial amount of funds that were given as designated funds. These funds are inflating our bank balance making it seem like we have more operating funds than we actually do. How would you handle this? Signed, Big Balance!
Dear Big Balance: This is a good question that brings up a larger issue. Restricted (Designated) funds must be kept separate from operating funds. The link to the Industry Canada bulletin that expounds on this follows:
http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cilp-pdci.nsf/eng/cl00693.html
Here is an excerpt from the bulletin:
Liability risks from co-mingling of donor restricted funds Donor restricted funds consist of gifts to a charity that are subject to restrictions, limitations, conditions, terms of reference, directions, or other restricting factors imposed by the donor that constrain or limit a charity concerning how the gift can be used. Donor restricted funds, also referred to as special charitable purpose trusts, can include:
endowment funds, i.e., gifts of capital to be held and invested in perpetuity;
donor restricted use, i.e., monies given to a building fund; and,
ten year gifts, i.e., gifts of capital to be held for a minimum of ten years in accordance with the re-quirements of the Income Tax Act.
At common law, each donor restricted fund is required to be held in a separate account from other re-stricted funds and cannot be co-mingled.
Churches are encouraged to deposit restricted funds that you will not be using regularly into the District Bond where the funds will garner interest. Otherwise, a separate account should be opened to avoid co-mingling funds.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Rose
