RAIL Art

Starting in the 1840s and for almost a century, railroads were America’s “dot-coms.” Railroads’ steel wheel on steel rail efficiency, large load capability, and all-weather reliability dominated our economy. At the same time, the railroad’s massive, mysteriously impersonal equipment traveling its own creation of the Open Road excited our imaginations. During that era, five rights of way were developed in Orange County, three of which remain in use today. Now, after being overshadowed by cars, trucks, and planes for some 70-80 years, railroads are re-asserting themselves as significant players in America’s twenty-first century economy. Frank S. Walker, Jr. Top to botton - Roanoke 1218 by Clinton Helms,

Golden Rails by Andrew Morgan, Under the Rapidan Trestle by Susan Garnett, 611 Locomotive by Ramey Campbell, Keepers of the Railroad by Lee Nixon, Old Remington Station by Kathleen Willingham, Postage Stamp Floor Cloth by Vyvyan Rungren.

There is no getting around the fact that the railroad has played a major role in the history of Orange, and continues to punctuate our daily lives with train whistles and traffic stops. With the Morin Gallery just yards from the tracks, this exhibit should feel right at home. Depicting the railway both past and present, memories, tributes to engines, serious to silly, complete with bells and whistles, this exhibit is sure to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Meet Artisan Anna Sawyer & Learn About the Not-So-Lost Art of BookbindingFriday, September 9th, 4-5pm in The Morin Gallery at The Arts Center In Orange Anna Sawyer was first drawn into bookbinding by a deep appreciation of the old crafts and skilled trades; as an avid reader and lover of antiques and all things beautiful, she quickly became fascinated with bookbinding. As she entered the bookbinding community, she was pleasantly surprised by the strong desire among bookbinders to further the craft by helping each other and passing on knowledge. The art of hand bookbinding will never die as long as there are skilled practitioners with a passion to teach others and share from their resources and skills to smooth the journey of those new to the trade.

Anna looks forward to sharing what she has learned and answering your questions about this fascinating trade. The event is free and attendees are encouraged to bring books for discussion.

Local artist Lee Nixon interprets Juneteenth! If you attended Orange County High School, the chances are good that Lee J. Nixon was your art teacher.

Retired from teaching, Nixon is now painting full-time. He works primarily in acrylics for their versatility and compatibility with other media. His Impressionist paintings reflect a need, care and reverence for a serene earth, and the desire to share it with the viewer through color, pattern and texture. His paintings have appeared in numerous galleries including the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond and The Arts Center In Orange.

His painting (to the left) The House That George Built is a tribute to George Gilmore and the many African-American founding fathers who, though born into slavery, upon emancipation worked to build homes, communities, and new lives for their families and the generations to come.
