The school year is upon us again. Everybody is focused on school supplies, sports gear, and school books. Brighten up Back to School blues with simple to make bookmarks which you can tuck into their backpacks for a surprise gift after a long day at school.

Skill Level: Confident Beginner/IntermediateSewing Time: 1 Hour

Janome Supplies Required:• Any Janome embroidery machine • Embroidery foot P • 140 x 140 hoop • Straight Stitch Needle Plate • High Tension Bobbin Case (yellow dot) • Purple Tip Needle • Janome Prewound Bobbin • Cutting Needle Set (002VFBSET) • Horizon Link Suite/Acutools/Embroidery Editor Download embroidery design: bookmark.jef

Supplies + Fabric Required:• 12” square lightweight cutaway stabilizer • 2 4” x 4” squares wool felt • Temporary Spray adhesive • Assorted colors embroidery thread

At your Computer:

1. Open EmbLink Tool/Embroidery Editor. 2. Navigate to folder with saved bookmark.jef, open design. 3. Select Edit > Designs.

Note: Do not rotate, resize or edit the bookmark design as doing so may distort the design information and the cutting needles may not work correctly. 4. Select Hoop SQ14. 5. Navigate to folders with designs you want to use to embellish the bookmarks. Insert a design into each triangle making sure the designs are not touching the cutting and stitching lines. If necessary, use the editing tools to rotate and resize to fit into each corner.

6. Write Design to machine using your favorite method.

At the Embroidery Machine

1. Center cutaway stabilizer in hoop.2. Open your bookmark with your added embroidery details.3. Attach hoop with stabilizer to machine.4. Sew the placement line; color #1 vermillion.

5. Spray a light coat of temporary spray adhesive to the wrong side of one felt square. Center this felt square over placement line.

6. Sew tack down line; color #2 gold.

7. Use the arrows on the Ready to Sew Screen to jump to color change #7.

Note: Colors 3-6 will be used to sew and cut out the bookmarks once your added embroidery designs are completed.

8. Embroider the added designs.

9. Carefully remove hoop from machine. DO NOT REMOVE STABLIZER AND FELT SQUARE.10. Lay hoop upside down on flat surface.

11. Spray a light coat of temporary spray adhesive to wrong side of felt square. Center this felt square over placement line.

This is the back.12. Attach hoop to machine, making sure the felt square is in place on the back.13. Jump to color #2 and tack down through all layers. 14. Sew color #3 yellow, stitching line.

15. Go to Set Mode; turn OFF Upper Thread Sensor.Note: The color numbers on the screen are now the colors of the cutting blades to be used.16. Insert the green cutting needle, start the machine to cut color #4.

17. Insert black cutting needle, start machine to cut color #5.18. Insert red cutting needle, start machine to cut color #6.19. Remove hoop from machine. 20. Remove book marks from hoop. Use embroidery scissors to trim the two threads that hold the bookmarks in place.

Get creative with your bookmarks; add names, embroider sports equipment, or favorite hobbies so that each bookmark reflects the personality of the recipient!

Reminder: Once you are finished making bookmarks, go to Set and turn the Upper Thread Sensor On to return this setting to normal on your machine.
