He had been hired by York University here to teach Ameri- can history and had been as- signed classes for the fall term but is unable to teach because of the Immigration Dept. rejec- tion. Dr. Kolko said he applied for landed-immigrant status in early May but received a letter from the federal immigration depart-, mnt in July saying his applica- tion had been refused. He filed an appeal six weeks ago but there has been no decision. John Saywell, dean of arts at York, said Dr. Kolko has been an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam war, but his opposition has been lawful. Courier-Express Wellsvillt Bureau ALFRED The bishop of the Rochester Episcopal Diocese told 400 delegates to a regional forum on aging Wednesday that they must act to create a better cli- mate toward the elderly. The Rt. Rev. Robert R. Spears, who noted that at 51 he was too young to be a conference dele- gate, said activity by the aged, in "irritating and educating the country," was the major element in removing the negative image attached to getting old. Hell at Alfred Tech The conference, with delegates from eight New York counties in the Southern Tier, was.held at the State Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred. Sim- ilar conferences are being held across the eoiintry in prepara- tion for a 1971 White House Con- ference on Aging. : The bishop, keynote speaker at the meeting, said two major questions will be discussed at the national conference: What is needed to create a better at- titude toward aging, and: if the aged do not work to create that climate, who will? After the speech, delegates split into 14 discussion groups and filled out questionnaires which, along with reports from the discussion groups, will be forwarded to the New York Of- fice for the Aging and to the White House conference pre- paratory staff. The delegates were addressed via closed-circuit teilevision by ;Gov, Nelson A. Rockefeller dur- ing a break in the small-group discussions. Cuba Specialty To Move to Filhnore ' Couritr-Mrprtn Wtlltv&ts Bureau FILLMORE—The Cuba Spe- cialty Manufacturing Co. of Houghton has purchased the for- mer Perry Knitting Co. building here and will move from Hough- ton into the building in October, it was announced Wednesday by A. Beverly Taylor, owner and manager. The 12,000-square-foot building on a 3'i-acre lot on Rt. 19 just south of Fillmore has been vacant since November 1968 when the Perry Co.'s Fillmore Division was closed. The Cuba company, which has been lo- cated in Houghton since 1912, makes fish and crab traps. The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Columbus Hospital. Patrolmen Raymond Shea and Edward Jacobs said Spencer was crossing Niagara St. from the west to the east curb en- route ta a nearby store when the accident occurred. The car, operated by Mrs. Dorothy N. Grosse, 3f, of 537 Busti Ave,, was northbound on Niagara St. His death boosted the city's traffic fatality toll to 34 for the year. There were 41 traffic deaths in the city during the same period in 1969. BataviaMan Dies While Lake Wading Courier-Express Batavia Bureau BATAVIA Frederick Berry, 61, of 9550 Putnam Rd, appar- ently suffered a fatal attack Wednesday afternoon white wading in the shallow water of Canandaigua Lake, Berry, an appraiser for the State Dept. of Equalisation and Assessment, had been staying at a Canandaigua motel with his wife. She told village police her husband had had a stroke earlier this year. They put on their bathing suits and went to the lake shore about 2:30 p.m,, Mrs. Berry said. Her husband could- n't swim but went down an embankment and was wading about 10 feet from shore. She turned her back to lower herself to the beach, Mrs. Berry told police, and when she looked again her husband was lying face-down in the water. The water waa only about knee deep. Two men from Rochester brought the body ashore. State police said a routine check of the two small buses the nine were riding in uncov- ered marijuana, amphetamines, barbituates and hashish, along with a hashish pipe and a "roach clip," used for smoking marijuana cigarettes. The arrested were identified by police as: Mat'hew Katz, 40, June Katz, 28,, Richard Pacharz, 25, Miss Aline Seegers, 22, and Ernest Enochson, 25, all of San Fran- cisco; Mark Frankel, 21, of Brooklyn; Mark Quinn, 21, War- wick, R.I.; James Duckett, 20, Fairfax, Calif., and Ross Win- etsky, Cambridge, Mass. The arrests were made about 10 a.m. at the intersection of Rts. 5 and 20, northwest of Avon. Fidanza Jr., 24, of Middleport suffered severe burns Wednesday when his clothing caught fire after the truck he was driving ran off the Holley-Byron Rd. and struck a tree. Fidanza is in serious condition at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. He has third-degree burns over 60 per cent of his body. Clarendon volunteer firemen extinguished the flames. Kolko, W'IO taught history last y?ar at the University of Buf­falo, has been refused landed-immigrant status in Canada be­cause his presence has been called "contrary to Canadian na­tional interests."

He had been hired by York University here to teach Ameri­can history and had been as­signed classes for the fall term but is unable to teach because of the Immigration Dept. rejec­tion.

Dr. Kolko said he applied for landed-immigrant status in early May but received a letter from the federal immigration depart-, mnt in July saying his applica­tion had been refused. He filed an appeal six weeks ago but there has been no decision.

John Saywell, dean of arts at York, said Dr. Kolko has been an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam war, but his opposition has been lawful. Dr. Kolko said he has sworn he is not a mem­ber of the Communist party and has never been in jail.

The bishop, keynote speaker at the meeting, said two major questions will be discussed at the national conference: What is needed to create a better at­titude toward aging, and: if the aged do not work to create that climate, who will?

After the speech, delegates split into 14 discussion groups and filled out questionnaires which, along with reports from the discussion groups, will be forwarded to the New York Of­fice for the Aging and to the White House conference pre­paratory staff.

The delegates were addressed via closed-circuit teilevision by ;Gov, Nelson A. Rockefeller dur­ing a break in the small-group discussions.

Cuba Specialty To Move to Filhnore

cialty Manufacturing Co. of Houghton has purchased the for-mer Perry Knitting Co. building here and will move from Hough­ton into the building in October, it was announced Wednesday by A. Beverly Taylor, owner and manager.

The 12,000-square-foot building on a 3'i-acre lot on Rt. 19 just south of Fillmore has been vacant since November 1968 when the Perry Co.'s Fillmore Division was closed. The Cuba company, which has been lo­cated in Houghton since 1912, makes fish and crab traps.

The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Columbus Hospital.

Patrolmen Raymond Shea and Edward Jacobs said Spencer was crossing Niagara St. from the west to the east curb en-route ta a nearby store when the accident occurred.

The car, operated by Mrs. Dorothy N. Grosse, 3f, of 537 Busti Ave,, was northbound on Niagara St.

His death boosted the city's traffic fatality toll to 34 for the year. There were 41 traffic deaths in the city during the same period in 1969.

William St., Town of Lancaster, was killed shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a car in front of his home.

Town Patrolmen Ronald Kei-cher and James Natalizia said the boy ran into the street to catch a school bus that was 100 feet away on the other side of the road. The driver of the car, Gary Nobbs, 29, of West Ave, Eden, was not charged.

Grand Island Student Dies as Car Skids

The injured student, Bryan J. Keuer, 26, of 2306 W. Oakfiekl Rd., Grand Island the driver, suffered superficial lacerations. He was treated at Brooks Me­morial Hospital, Dunkirk.

Hill was pronounced dead on arrival at the Dunkirk hospital, Chautauqua County Coroner An­son Stewart, who issued a certi-ficate of accidentia! death, said Hill suffered multiple injuries.

Village police said Keller told them the car in which he and Hill were returning to the Iro­quois Motor Court, Rt. 20, Town of Sheridan, where they lived, skidded as he attempted to pass a pickup truck. Keller was thrown from the auto, but Hill was wedged between the car and the tree.

BataviaMan Dies While Lake Wading

Courier-Express Batavia Bureau BATAVIA — Frederick Berry,

61, of 9550 Putnam Rd, appar­ently suffered a fatal attack Wednesday afternoon white wading in the shallow water of Canandaigua Lake,

Berry, an appraiser for the State Dept. of Equalisation and Assessment, had been staying at a Canandaigua motel with his wife. She told village police her husband had had a stroke earlier this year.

They put on • their bathing suits and went to the lake shore about 2:30 p.m,, Mrs. Berry said. Her husband could­n't swim but went down an embankment and was wading about 10 feet from shore.

She turned her back to lower herself to the beach, Mrs. Berry told police, and when she looked again her husband was lying face-down in the water. The water waa only about knee deep.

Two men from Rochester brought the body ashore. An Ontario County coroner is in­vestigating,

9 Arrested At Avon On Drug Counts

women, all from out of State, were arrested here Wednesday morning on charges of possess­ing dangerous drugs a»d nar­cotic implements.

State police said a routine check of the two small buses the nine were riding in uncov­ered marijuana, amphetamines, barbituates and hashish, along with a hashish pipe and a "roach clip," used for smoking marijuana cigarettes.

The arrested were identified by police as:

Mat'hew Katz, 40, June Katz, 28,, Richard Pacharz, 25, Miss Aline Seegers, 22, and Ernest Enochson, 25, all of San Fran­cisco; Mark Frankel, 21, of Brooklyn; Mark Quinn, 21, War­wick, R.I.; James Duckett, 20, Fairfax, Calif., and Ross Win-etsky, Cambridge, Mass.

The arrests were made about 10 a.m. at the intersection of Rts. 5 and 20, northwest of Avon.

After arraignment b e f o r e Town Justice Paul Strassen-burgh, they were released on cash bond for a court appear­ance at a date to be set after the group consults with an at­torney.

Police said the nine are mem­bers of a rock music group ami were driving from San Francis­co to the Boston area.

MEDINA - Michael Paul Collins, 18-month-old son of Mrs. Diana Powley of Holley and Richard P. Collins of San Diego, Calif., died Tuesday in Medina. Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car.

The child was hit earlier in the day in front of the home of maternal grandparents, with whom he had b**en living on Salt Works Rd., Shelby.

State police said the boy was hit by a car driven by Joseph Poodey, 80, of 461 Bloomingdale Rd,, Akron, who was not charged. Poodey told investi-* gators he slowed when he saw the child standing near a mail­box but the child darted sudden­ly into the road.

Area Trucker Burned Badly

Jr., 24, of Middleport suffered severe burns Wednesday when his clothing caught fire after the truck he was driving ran off the Holley-Byron Rd. and struck a tree.

Fidanza is in serious condition at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. He has third-degree burns over 60 per cent of his body.

Clarendon volunteer firemen extinguished the flames. Neither they nor Orleans County depu­ties could learn much about the accident since there were no witnesses and they couldn't question the driver.
