The Client:Achieving its Royal Charter as an institution of University status in 1967, the Royal College of Art (RCA) provides a unique educational experience in art and design to a community of carefully selected, and exceptionally talented postgraduate students from around the world.

The RCA is currently in the middle of an exciting programme of expansion at its campus in Battersea, London. These changes will have a transformative effect on the College and the areas of teaching it covers. The expansion plans include enhanced security of its buildings to maintain the protection of staff, students and assets. When the project completes in 2014 more than 300 RCA students will be based in Battersea.

The Situation:The RCA’s top priority is to provide a safe and secure environment for its staff and students at all times. Due to the diverse cultures and ages of its students, the College needs to address both differing learning styles and lifestyle needs. To ensure this is covered, access to the College buildings is provided from early morning until midnight seven days a week.

Due to the busy city location of the campus and in addition to ensuring the physical and personal safety of students, the RCA also needed to address safety in terms of protecting student work and intellectual property. These factors, coupled with a number of incidents where the College was unable to use poor quality recorded images as evidence for onsite events, it was agreed as part of the ongoing

redevelopment that there was a need to upgrade and enhance the current CCTV system to deliver continued security for all.

After a comprehensive tendering process Red Alert, a Kent based Security Installation company, was awarded the project and asked to deliver an upgraded CCTV system that would meet the current needs of the university whilst allowing for future expansion.

The Solution:Red Alert had worked with Honeywell Security Group on a number of previous projects and asked Honeywell to demonstrate to the College the new range of Honeywell IP cameras. After an onsite demonstration, the RCA agreed that the proposed IP solution would provide the required enhancements to its existing

system, deliver the enhanced images and quality of service needed, whilst also allowing for cost effective future enhancement.

“When we were approached to tender for this project, I knew that the Honeywell IP high definition solution would be perfect,” said Darren Martin, Technical Sales Surveyor at Red Alert. “The high quality images delivered by the cameras specified coupled with the fantastic customer and technical support from Honeywell ensured a smooth and timely delivered project.”

Honeywell’s new HDZ IP PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras were installed to monitor the perimeter and grounds, whilst a number of Honeywell’s high definition indoor/outdoor minidome cameras were chosen to monitor activity in common and critical areas. >

The BenefitsA Reliable Brand, a Trusted Security SystemThrough expertise in similar security installations and experience with the tried and trusted Honeywell CCTV system, Red Alert was able to deliver a reliable solution that would meet the continued needs of the College. And with support from the Honeywell sales team, provide product expertise from introduction to installation and commissioning.

Innovative ProductsThe installation of the new HDZ IP PTZ domes provides the College with brilliant, crisp picture quality which is ideal for areas that require detailed surveillance. These cameras provide high definition images, even in low light environments, and as such are ideal for external use at the College, monitoring car parks, storage areas and quiet access points ensuring complete safety for all around the clock.

Enhanced Image QualityThe upgraded system delivers clear and concise images ensuring incidents are fully identified, recorded and actioned accordingly,

eradicating previous situations where prosecution was not possible due to insufficient evidence owing to poor image quality.

Flexible and ScalableDue to the continued redevelopment and ongoing upgrades it was essential that any new products integrated with the current system, whilst also allowing for future expansion. The introduction of IP technology has provided increased options and flexibility for future cost effective and strategic enhancement of the system.

Ease of UseThe RCA required a user-friendly system that would be suitable for all staff to operate. The enhanced system installed allows easier and smoother security management for the site as it is managed from one location and from a single user interface enabling time and resource efficiencies.

Cost SavingsBy installing a professional security system Red Alert has provided the RCA with a cost-effective solution, offering significant material cost savings by supporting the limited

manpower of the security team with innovative and reliable security protection.

“The RCA has benefitted greatly from the enhanced security provided by this installation,” said Christopher Franklin, Facilities Manager at The Royal College of Art. “The clear and concise images provided by Honeywell’s high definition cameras ensures more robust and trustworthy security, whilst the ease of integration with our existing CCTV system ensured minimum disruption while maintaining safety at all times.“

Partner of ChoiceEstablished in 1993 Red Alert has gained an enviable reputation in the security industry for innovation and high end service levels. Based in Ashford, Kent, it is a multi discipline security company and services a broad range of clients throughout London and the south east. An award winning NACOSS Gold and BAFE business, its markets include intruder, fire, CCTV and access control. Organic and acquisition growth has contributed to the company’s success with operations in the public, private and industrial sectors. n

Paxton Launch Highly Anticipated Vandal Resistant and SIP Compatible Additions to the Net2 Entry Range

Paxton, UK access control leaders, are excited to announce that installers

can now get their hands on the new additions to their popular IP door entry range, Net2 Entry. The smart, simple door entry family is now SIP compatible and offers a super tough vandal resistant panel option.

The new developments in the range are due to high demand from installers. This demonstrates Paxton’s trademark commitment to listening to what customers need and developing access control solutions that are fit for market.

The Net2 Entry Vandal Resistant Panel allows installers to open opportunities at sites where vandal resistant capabilities are a prerequisite. The Net2 Entry VR Panel is made from corrosion resistant marine grade stainless steel and has an IP55 rating, to meet the most demanding environments. The toughened polycarbonate screen can withstand even the harshest treatment with an impact resistance rating of IK09. The panel comes in three variants; surface mount, flush mount and rain hood.

The new SIP compatible Net2 Entry allows

customers to answer their Net2 Entry panel from any SIP enabled device such as a smartphone, PC or tablet. Installers can reach customers with a new solution and increase their business potential; offering SIP technology ensures that forward thinking customers won’t go elsewhere for new developments.

Net2 Entry is designed to be a true plug and play solution with no complex wiring or diagrams, and can be combined with Paxton’s leading access control system, Net2. Just one type of cable, Cat5, is required to connect the robust exterior panel, Net2 door controller and audio/video touchscreen monitor. Net2 Entry expands using industry standard PoE extension switches making it a scalable solution for a variety of sites, from simple one door systems to much larger premises.

Adam Stroud, CEO of the Paxton Group, says: “We have developed this Net2 Entry panel, to ensure that it meets the exact standards of a vandal resistant security product, and is still attractive and easy to use. With the addition of SIP integration, allowing the use of 3rd party equipment, our installers will have a lot to play with. Put simply, this has been developed specifically for our installers, and for their requirements.” n

ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOy Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOy, has supplied products for an award winning children’s hospice.

Led by Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd based in Oxford Road, yeovil, Little Harbour in Cornwall was awarded the Architectural Ironmongery Specification Awards, by GAI and RIBA for Public Health Buildings. The children’s hospice was an ambitious project, which focused very much on the specialist needs of its multiple users.

Designed to provide a high standard of care for terminally ill children and their families, the self-contained building features patient and family accommodation suites, treatment rooms, spa, as well as administration facilities and reception rooms.

ASSA worked closely with Spiller to ensure that patients and visitors had freedom of access around the building, but that this was carefully balanced with security for both the patients and staff. Supplying a masterkey system, modular lockcases, door furniture, remote door monitoring systems and standalone electronic locks, all helped to meet this brief.

The masterkey system featured patent protected ASSA twin combi cylinders to provide added peace of mind as well as improved key management for the building owner and users.

Both Codoor and Solicode access control systems from ASSA, were used by Spiller throughout the impressive hospice, whilst designated escape doors were incorporated within the monitoring system with single action egress, ensuring the building met with all the relevant fire safety standards.

In addition, external doors incorporated both deadbolt monitoring by means of dual pole microswitches housed within the lockcase body, as well as door position monitoring. This provides a clear indication of each doors’ status and vulnerability – valuable information for overseeing patient access and security.

Speaking on the award-winning project, Mike Trowbridge from Spiller Architectural Ironmongery Ltd, said: “Little Harbour is an impressive project, which provides a vital service for the South West. Given the importance of the development it was crucial that we were able to supply products and solutions that met with the building’s demands, as well as the latest legislation. ASSA products enabled us to do this.

“The masterkey system and remote access control systems in particular, are vital in achieving the balance between access and security, whilst also creating management efficiencies for the building’s owners.”

Paul Johnson, Commercial Manager, from ASSA ABLOy Security Solutions, added: “The quality of the ASSA solutions supplied by Spiller more than justifies the prestigious award and were very pleased to be a part of this project. Working with Spiller has helped to ensure that a holistic specification solution has been supplied, which works with the building’s design and structure, whilst facilitating the needs of the patients, visitors and staff.” n For further information please visit www.spillerai.co.uk or www.assaabloy.co.uk/securitysolutions.

Axis announces high frame rate fixed network cameras for capture of quick movements in HD quality.

AXIS Q1614 and AXIS Q1614-E Fixed Network Cameras allow for identification of people and objects in demanding lighting conditions. In addition, the new fixed IP cameras provide a number of innovative installation features.

Axis Communications, the market leader in network video, announces the indoor AXIS Q1614 and the outdoor-ready AXIS Q1614-E cameras. Able to capture quick movements recording at twice the usual frame rate and to handle complex scenes with high contrasts and extreme low-light conditions, these IP cameras are ideal for traffic monitoring, city surveillance and industrial applications.

AXIS Q1614/-E cameras feature HDTV 720p recording at 50 or 60 frames per second which resembles twice the frame rate used in conventional cameras. This ensures quick movements are captured in more detail so that for example quickly passing objects on a sliding band in an industrial production line can be better identified.

Axis’ Wide Dynamic Range – dynamic capture (WDR) technology enables AXIS Q1614/-E cameras to handle complex scenes with high contrasts such as for example when sunlight creates both very bright zones as well as very dark shadow areas. Under these circumstances AXIS Q1614 and AXIS Q1614-E provide homogeneous images without too dark or too bright zones. This allows for identification of people and objects no matter if they are in a very bright or very dark zone of the monitored area.

AXIS Q1614/-E cameras also feature Axis’ Lightfinder technology to allow for effective operation in extreme low-light conditions. In contrast to conventional day and night cameras that switch to black and white in darkness, cameras incorporating Axis’ Lightfinder technology can maintain colours even in very dark conditions. There are many situations where surveillance video with colour is an important factor for successful identification, and this capability greatly enhances the possibility to effectively identify people and objects.

“The AXIS Q1614 cameras combine two appreciated technologies that we first introduced with the previous AXIS Q16 Series; Axis’ Lightfinder and the Wide Dynamic Range-dynamic capture,” says Erik Frännlid, Axis’ Director of Product

Management. “The cameras are not only suitable for all type of lighting conditions, but they represent our first fixed network cameras to provide smoother video with 50 or 60 frames per second in HDTV 720p video quality. We believe that the high frame rate and excellent video quality will be a successful combination in those applications where it is required to capture quick movements of objects, even in tough lighting situations.”

Axis is introducing new innovative installation features with AXIS Q1614/-E Fixed Network Cameras to cut down on time needed for installation and to ensure optimal setup of the cameras. With the new levelling assistance for example, a buzzer and a flashing light guide the installer to mount the camera at the right horizontal level. This is very useful when the installer is unsure whether the installation bracket is mounted straight or not. AXIS Q1614/-E are also Axis’ first cameras with adjustable high-sensitive shock detection, a function which enables the camera to automatically send an alarm to a control room if it is hit. This feature is especially valuable in areas subject to vandalism, and helps operators maximise camera uptime, see film.

The indoor AXIS Q1614 and the outdoor-ready AXIS Q1614-E fixed network cameras are planned to be available in Q4 2013 through Axis’ distribution channels.

The camera is supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner Program, and AXIS Camera Station. The camera includes support for AXIS Camera Companion, AXIS Camera Application Platform, AXIS Video Hosting System and ONVIF for easy camera system integration and for application developers to provide the camera with intelligent capabilities. n For further information please visit: www.axis.com

Luminite Electronics BoundaryShield wireless IR beam detectors

Luminite Electronics has introduced BoundaryShield, a battery powered, wireless, active IR beam range, which works in conjunction with its well-established, Genesis PIR detector system. The beams create an “invisible” fence around a site perimeter or across a gateway or corridor. They trigger alarms when the beam’s IR detection line is broken by an intruder or vehicle. Relay outputs can be used to create a physical alarm or raise a barrier; site key-holders can be emailed or warned; CCTV system recording can be triggered; and remote operators can be alerted, such as at a central monitoring station.

BoundaryShield has a modular design for simple system configuration and installation. Each wireless, battery powered Beam Head unit transmits alarm data to a Genesis Masthead receiver from up to 1km away. The Beam Head units, supplied in pairs, can be used as standalone detectors for mounting on walls or posts and come with 60m or 100m detection ranges. Single direction towers, for wall mounting, allow detection in one direction. The double sided towers,

for free-standing applications, allow detection in two directions. Tower heights are 1.75m, which incorporates one pair of Beam Heads per detection direction, and 3m tall, which incorporate two pairs of Beam Heads per direction.

“Luminite’s BoundaryShield beam detectors can accurately sense intruders across a 100m span,” explains Graham Creek, MD at Luminite. “We use advanced radio communications to enable up to 64 Beam Heads to communicate with a Masthead transceiver in exactly the same way as our Genesis PIR system. The beams are ideal for use at large sites without fenced perimeters or at gateways for barrier control. No cabling is needed to install the BoundaryShield system, so it can be mounted quickly and easily on a site perimeter, with no civil works.”

The BoundaryShield has front access for easy, on-site fitting and adjustment. The case is IP 65 rated for external use and made from tough, weather-proof ABS. Battery life is up to 2 years, using standard Alkaline cells, depending on settings and location. Lithium cells extend battery life further. The BoundaryShield can also take power from a 12v PSU,

instead of batteries, if preferred. n For further information please

NSI’s ‘Wall of Shame’ NSI’s ‘Wall of Shame’ Receives Warm Industry Welcome

In June of this year, NSI launched the ‘Wall of Shame’; a dedicated page on the NSI website to publicise the names of organisations who falsely claim to be NSI approved. The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the industry, prompting much positive feedback and discussion.

NSI has a high success rate in addressing misuse of logo complaints.Through direct contact with those making misrepresentations and with the assistance of Trading Standards and the Advertising Standards Authority, most misuse of logo issues are addressed and rectified quickly and co-operatively. The ‘Wall of Shame’ seeks to address those more persistent offenders.

It is a testament to the profile of the NSI brand that a number of organisations providing services in

the security and fire sectors falsely claim to be NSI approved, highlighting the commercial advantages that can be gleaned from displaying the NSI badge. However, this is clearly not acceptable, as it is misleading for end users and is unfair on those genuine organisations that invest the time and resource in maintaining their NSI approval by submitting themselves to regular and robust NSI audits.

NSI takes this matter very seriously and by continuing to strictly monitor and ‘name and shame’ these falsely-claiming companies, NSI hopes to protect the end users as well as NSI approved companies.

The NSI ‘Wall of Shame’ initiative has been welcomed by the industry in general. To date, this initiative has prompted more responses across NSI social media pages and groups than any other topic. It has also been positively referenced in a number of public forums.n The Wall of Shame email address provides the facility for this to be reported [email protected]

Impact resistance tests recently carried out by Samsung Techwin on its internal dome cameras with plastic housings have produced some surprising results.

The tests, which were carried out on all Samsung Techwin’s dome cameras to establish their ability to withstand impact, showed that Samsung Techwin’s SND-5061 1.3 megapixel network internal dome camera, despite being priced as an entry level model, is impact resistant to IK8. “Although it is our lowest priced internal dome camera model, the SND-5061 proved to be highly impact resistant,” said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “The good news however, is that all of the models successfully passed the tests and were given an IK rating.”

Historically impact resistant domes have always been thought of as been made of metal. Whilst we are proud to have established a reputation for manufacturing products that are robust as well as reliable, we nevertheless therefore felt it important to verify to customers that our

internal domes with plastic housings could continue to operate effectively even when attacked.”

Morphologically, the monitor is a smooth, flat white terminal equipped with a TFT colour screen and a keypad with such surprising features as an additional keyboard that remains invisible until the user needs it. Thanks also to its extreme thinness and rounded corners, the set conveys an immediate impression of freshness and elegance.

This design has been extended beyond the surface to

achieve the best usability. The result is a user interface that offers simple and intuitive use. So much so, that the user is able to program any of the equipment’s several functions easily, with no need for previous instructions.

SMILE comes in two different formats: with a 7” or 3,5” screen, both suitable for surface or flush mounted installation. In the former case, the monitor stands out 20 mm from the wall; if the flush option is chosen (in this case a frame is supplied to provide a perfect finish), the visible profile is only 4 mm.

SMILE provides advanced features as standard: different ringtones, do-not-disturb option, panic call and elevator control, among others. And as usual in all products from Fermax, it has different elements to facilitate accessibility to everyone.

SMILE, highlighted by the prestigious professional association ADI-FAD as one of the best designed products of 2013, is a project by Ramón Benedito, National Design Prizewinner in 1992 and Fermax’s Worldwide Design Partner. n

CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products can today announce they have won the contract to secure the largest single NHS hospital build in Scotland; the New South Glasgow Hospitals, part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The publicly funded development will give Glasgow one of the most advanced adult acute services hospitals in the UK and will be the biggest critical care complex in Scotland.

CEM Approved Reseller Boston Networks is installing a multi million pound Intelligent Building solution for the new super hospital which features the CEM AC2000 Security Management System (SMS), securing over 400 doors throughout the facility. Construction work commenced on site early 2010 and is due for completion in 2015. The main contractor on the project is Brookfield Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd.

The powerful CEM AC2000 system will secure the brand New Adult and Children’s hospital. The new 14 floor adult hospital will house 1109 beds, state of the art emergency, acute receiving, critical care, 30 modern operating theatres, diagnostic services and a full range of in-patient and day case paediatric services.

“At the New South Glasgow hospitals, AC2000 will provide a highly flexible and integrated security solution by linking to both Pelco Endura CCTV and Honeywell Galaxy Intruder Detection Systems” said Philip Verner, Regional Sales Director, EMEA, CEM Systems. “The CEM AC2000 system has many high level integrations in its portfolio, which enables it to act as a powerful Security Management System for South Glasgow hospital.

Commenting on the partnership, Paul Goodbrand, Director of Intelligent Buildings, Boston Networks states, ‘‘Due to the sheer scale and complexity of the New South Glasgow Hospitals project, Boston Networks had to consider numerous factors when choosing our security partners, such as future proof technology, integration capabilities and the ability to provide a solution that would allow us to meet all elements of the installation and commissioning program”.

In addition to high integration capabilities, the CEM AC2000 system offers a comprehensive set of software applications that enhance site operations. The New South Glasgow Hospitals will utilise both AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging & Pass Production System), which allows users to design professional, quality ID passes which can include text, logos, graphics, photos, barcodes and signatures, and AC2000 AED (Alarm Event Display). AC2000 AED provides a dynamic and real-time graphical view of all alarms and events that occur on the AC2000 system.

As a new building with an Ethernet infrastructure the hospital was also able to utilise CEM’s Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology. This means that only one Ethernet cable is required at the door, ensuring simplified installation and time savings; a welcomed benefit in such a huge project.

“The technological capabilities of CEM’s unique Power over Ethernet (PoE) solution along with AC2000 met the needs of the Hospital’s multifaceted Access Control demands and also provided Boston Networks with the integration capabilities essential to deliver a robust and future proof IP security solution, within program and budget”, continued Paul Goodbrand, Director of Intelligent Buildings, Boston Networks . “By having complete control of the installation and working closely with CEM, Boston Networks will ensure that we meet and exceed the project milestones, installation and commissioning dates.”

CEM EtherProx readers will also be used to secure the site. EtherProx is the industry’s smallest Ethernet card reader with integrated keypad, LCD display and internal database giving off-line validation and intelligent decision-making at the point of entry, even when host communications are not available. EtherProx readers can display hospital cardholders with immediate text descriptions on the swipe of their card i.e. a hospital porter trying to access the hospital pharmacy may get the message - Access Denied and a red LED will flash indicating access has not be granted. n For further information visit www.cemsys.com

The new GCI-K2505B true day / night box camera is the latest addition to Grundig’s comprehensive IP range. The high quality IP camera offers outstanding sensitivity at low-light levels. The camera remains in colour mode until 0.03 Lux, before switching to black and white mode, where its sensitivity extends to an incredible 0.005 Lux with no additional IR lighting.

The GCI-K2505B uses a 2 Megapixel CMOS sensor with dual shutter and Progressive Scan technology to produce high quality, quad video streams at these exceptionally low light levels. Installers can select a range of resolutions for each video stream. Options include a single, 1080p stream at 50 frames per second (FPS) in H.264 or MJPEG formats; dual streams of 1080p and 720p at 50FPS; and Quad streams of 1080p, 2x 720p and CIF, simultaneously at 25 FPS.

Andreas Franusic, product manager at Grundig, explains, “The high ‘frames per second’ rate increases low-light performance and enables real-time video

recording from multiple streams simultaneously. The Quad stream technology allows efficient video transmission and storage, whilst saving network bandwidth. The streams can be optimized to suit applications, such as 1080p for NVR recording and lower resolution 720p, D1 or CIF video streams for monitor displays, PCs, tablets and smartphone viewing.”

The GCI-K2505B is ONVIF S compatible, comes with a micro SD/SDHC memory card slot for alarm and scheduled image recording and has a power over Ethernet (PoE IEEE 802.3af) option, so no separate power supply is required.

The camera’s video format is 16:9, which can be rotated through 90° to provide portrait (corridor view) or landscape views. It has motion detection built-in and five privacy zones. Image quality has been further enhanced with ATW, WDR and DNR functionality. n For further information visit www.grosvenortechnology.com

Spanish security specialist Omega Seguridad has already secured over 20 solar parks across Spain and its neighbouring countries. The company always tries to convince its customers

to install thermal imaging cameras for perimeter protection and surveillance projects. And this is exactly what happened for a solar park surveillance project in Sebis, Romania.

The SR seriesFor this particular project, Omega Seguridad relied on FLIR’s SR-Series surveillance cameras, which offer high quality thermal imaging in any night or daytime environmental conditions. More specifically SR-313 cameras with 35 mm lens and 320 x 240 resolution was selected, along with SR-324 cameras with 19 mm lens and 320 x 240 resolution. The SR-Series of security cameras provide high contrast imagery optimized to get the most out of video analytics software. In this case, video analytics was provided by Spanish company Davantis.

Surveillance technologiesOmega Seguridad usually offers two options for perimeter protection to its customers: CCTV

cameras and thermal imaging cameras. Although traditional CCTV systems are effective for security and surveillance applications, they are not able to see in total darkness. As a result, they have to be complemented with additional lighting.

Smaller investment for thermal imagingAlthough a thermal camera is still more expensive than a visual video camera, the investment cost for perimeter surveillance will still be lower, as fewer cameras are needed. Fewer cameras also mean that there will be less investment on camera-related equipment ie. The equipment required to ensure the camera operates efficiently and get the video signal onto the control room screen.

Better performance with thermal imagingThe lower overall investment is not the only reason why Omega Seguridad prefers thermal

imaging for the Sebis project in Romania. Thermal cameras also have a higher accuracy and they generate fewer false alarms, which ultimately results in less frustration and less work for the control room operator.n For more information about thermal imaging cameras please visit www.flir.com

Tensor is a long running specialist supplier and installer of Panasonic surveillance solutions with expert experience

and knowledge in; smartcard and biometrics, time and attendance, access control, visitor monitoring, gates, barriers and turnstiles, digital CCTV, fire roll call and HR personnel software. Established in 1991 Tensor has received a number of accreditations across specialist sectors including the Aerospace Defence industry, secured by Design accreditation, British Security Industry Association and Safe Contractor approval and has delivered a multitude of projects.

One of Tensor’s most recent projects required close collaboration with J2K Video

Ltd to provide a fully integrated security solution for Continental Clothing to feature two of the most revolutionary pieces of equipment in the security sector; Panasonic’s WV-SW395 and WV-NW502.

Continental Clothing is a designer and manufacturer which began in 1994. As the originator of the baby doll t-shirt style in Europe the company continues to lead the way in terms of new ideas and designs. The focus of Continental Clothing is on the creation of high quality, expertly styled garments with a vision which surpasses other similar operations; Continental Clothing strives for low carbon clothing built upon the principles of sustainable production and socially positive supply chain management. Continental has

a strict code of conduct based on both the conventions of the International Labour Organisation and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and work with the Environmental Justice Foundation in support of the Clean Cotton Campaign.

With highly desirable fashion garments in significant volumes on site, the security solution for Continental Clothing delivered by J2K and Tensor was designed to secure the premises of the warehouse and distribution centre in Bedford. Continental needed a reliable and effective warning system in place that would detect break-ins through side walls of the building. This was with the aim to meet key insurance requirements and maintain a sustainable business

operation that would be protected against possible threats.

In order to successfully secure the premises a system was designed that combined the WVR-64NI-16000 SharpView Network Video Recorder (NVR) with Genesis’ Luminite PIR Detectors and the SharpView Manager Professional software. Another key component to the system were WV-S395 Super Dynamic, weather resistant HD network dome cameras that were selected to provide pan-tilt-zoom control and auto-tracking of 720p high definition (HD) images plus WV-NW502 fixed HD super dynamic dome cameras from Panasonic.

Although the use of vibration sensors was identified as one of the first options to evaluate, several hundred sensors would have been required and the cost would have exceeded the available budget of Continental Clothing. Tensor therefore developed a system which was equally secure and was available at a lower cost.

“Not all businesses have a lot of money to spend on security and it is essential to develop a solution which is within the constraints of the budget. The flexibility of the Panasonic equipment was integral in achieving this as it offered extensive possibilities in how to deliver the

desired security solution.” Jay of J2KThe NVR has been developed

for Megapixel and HD video requirements and is accompanied by the VMS software ‘SharpView Manager Professional’ allows security professionals to manage their security system on Apple Mac OS X and Windows PCs at the same time. Several Luminite PIR detectors use wireless sensors to detect body warmth from possible intruders and send a signal to a central receiver that is connected to the SharpView NVR. Tensor has programmed the SharpView NVR to send the WV-S395 and WV-NW502 to preset positions relating to the location from where

a PIR signal was received.The WV-SW395 is an all-in-

one, fully functional outdoor network dome which takes HD IP video surveillance to a new level. Fitted with a newly developed 1.3 Megapixel MOS sensor, the WV-SW395 delivers high quality images in HD 720p and up to 30ips. Multiple H.264 and VGA streams ensure real-time recording and monitoring capability. The dome is fully functional with 360 degree panning and has 18x optical zoom, with further 12x digital zoom which can increase to 36x optical zoom in VGA mode. 24/7 monitoring is further ensured by a host of features including Super Dynamic technology which ensures clear images and face detection which sends data to the WVR-64NI- 16000 SharpView Network Video Recorder to enable its face matching functionality.

The WV-NW502 H.264 Vandal Resistant Network Dome Camera

features Super Dynamic technology, up to 3 Megapixel JPEG stream, Multiple H.264 streams and JPEG streams. It is the perfect solution for an IP/analogue hybrid system such as the Continental Clothing’s system. In addition, the WV-NW502 comes with superior colour reproduction and the ability to alter the JPEG image compression ratio when an alarm is triggered so that higher quality images can be provided.

Both of these cameras function seamlessly in conjunction with the SharpView NVR, Luminite PIR detectors and SharpView Manager Professional, making this system exemplary of Panasonic surveillance cross compatibility with existing and other manufacturers’ solutions.

“Despite the complexity of the solution, with regards to the variety of the equipment involved, the installation was installed, tested

and delivered to the satisfaction of our client. The different elements functioned seamlessly and the business met its objectives.” explained Matt Hopwood of Tensor.

To date the system has provided a number of early warnings of potential intrusions along all sides of the building and has helped the Continental Clothing team confidently secure entrances and goods shutters. Luminite PIR detectors by Genesis alert the SharpView Network Video Recorder which tells the WV-SW395 or WV-NW502S to cover the area of intrusion. The video is streamed directly to the Security Manager’s PC which is running SharpView Manager Professional. This enables staff to take control of the cameras and monitor possible threats with greater detail. It is also possible to review alarm triggers and the causes of the alerts with more speed. n

Tensor, Panasonic and J2K have delivered a solution within budget and on time which today flawlessly executes everything we required. We are delighted to have a fully secure premise, which meets the requirements of our insurer and allows our

business to flourish.” said Ian Cundy of Panasonic

Milestone XProtect® open platform video management software (VMS) is the basis for an integrated

security system in the Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). Since each school previously had a stand-alone system, the security was upgraded to connect all 26 buildings in the district on one IP network.

Paul Mahon, Director of Construction and Maintenance for TCAPS, partnered with COMMTECH Design for the integrated solution that has Milestone video surveillance technology as the central core. “Since the Milestone XProtect integration into our school district, we’ve had instances on campus where having a reliable security system has easily reinforced our decision to upgrade,” confirms Mahon.

The Traverse City Area Public School District (TCAPS) covers 300 square miles over three counties in Central Michigan, with thousands of students, teachers and staff. The increased need to protect them and the valuable public property of its 26 buildings prompted a custom security system to enable monitoring all school activity from a central hub that integrates all security systems in the district into one easy-to-use yet effective platform. Milestone XProtect® Corporate software allows authorized staff to monitor for safety, security and disciplinary actions at any time.

Flexible, Federated Solution for Entire District“We’ve worked with multiple solutions over the years, each deploying its own stand-alone

presence, with pros and cons,” stated Mahon. “Installing a district-wide solution that’s easy to use, scalable and supports our multiple levels of security ensures the safety of our students and staff, which was the number one priority for this project.”

It is a full-scale, federated security solution that includes video streaming, alarm management, access control via card access systems, emergency panic lockdown abilities, video synchronization for all the above, and the ability to control each system centrally from one main control unit.

“TCAPS was quite a large-scale design: we had to understand the intricacies of 26 structures that were all unique in their own needs. A vast amount of engineering had to be examined, dealing with the

School connection

different wiring, ceiling setups and potential monitoring station locations,” says COMMTECH consultant Bret Emerson. “We wanted a comprehensive solution that allows video surveillance to be integrated seamlessly into all aspects of the district.”

After Emerson’s report on the system’s architecture and design, TCAPS contracted with Windemuller Electric to provide the customized solution, including access control, lockdown and alarm systems. NETech, subcontracted through Windemuller, installed the Milestone solution, ensuring the VMS core of the implementation was perfectly tuned for the district. The XProtect software was implemented quickly and efficiently in the school settings, minimizing interruption or confusion with the administrators who monitor the hundreds of cameras.

A total of 685 cameras were set up in TCAPS, 397 in Phase II by NETech. Panasonic’s IP WV-Sw355, WV-SW395 and WV-SF366 cameras were installed throughout the entire district, in addition to

two Arecont AV8185 IP cameras. XProtect’s open platform abilities allow end users to have a freedom of choice in hardware devices. More than 1,500 models of network cameras and encoders from over 100 different manufacturers are supported by Milestone.

Throughout the school district, 19 monitoring stations were established, each with an HP video workstation synchronized with Milestone XProtect Corporate. Four HP ProLiant video servers and an HP StorageWorks MDS600 with 70TB of space round off the system’s storage capabilities. This powerful capacity is important for so much video data: Milestone XProtect Corporate supports an unlimited number of cameras, users and sites, making it the perfect match for TCAPS, who have plans for additional cameras.

Future-proof Upgrades and Expandability“Keeping in mind our plans to expand the system, the server and software are a very important aspect. As of now, our server has

the capacity to tack on additional cameras. Using XProtect helps us maintain the work and educational environment when we decide to upgrade. It’s simple, fast and effective,” states Mahon.

“I’ve been working with Milestone and its software solutions for five years,” stated Emerson. “We came into this knowing the system would eventually be expanded, and XProtect Corporate will completely support this. We can rest assured the growing security plan will be easily achievable, adding any camera seamlessly that fits the budgetary or physical needs of TCAPS.”

Milestone solutions are future-proof, with a licensing model that offers upgrades with the freedom to add or integrate new technologies as they are developed.

Select administration and staff, known as Champions around the school district, are being trained in waves by Luke LeaTrea of NETech to operate the security system.

“The software is amazing,” states LeaTrea. “The administrators in the technical champion sessions quickly

learn and understand the Milestone software. There are rarely any post-training questions. It is by far one of the most user-friendly interfaces available.”

Since the security upgrade, there have been instances where school property was reported missing, and those trained to use the system monitored, reviewed and recorded the event. The digital evidence was quickly and easily exported from the Milestone system and provided to the local police department with a built-in viewer.

“At times, we have dealt with vandalism, instances of theft or other security issues regarding publicly owned property outside the school environment. We can easily show the footage to the accused and police to quickly turn around the situation. We are extremely confident in our system and trust that we are keeping the school and all of those in attendance safe. XProtect is really well put together,

powerful software. It meets our complicated needs and we have been very happy with the outcome.” concludes Mahon. n For further information please visit: www.milestonesys.com

Brenda Taylor of Traka discusses how key and asset management can integrate with other security disciplines to

extend beyond ‘convergence’ and move towards intelligent building management. Brenda shows how assets can be protected with an approach that draws on shared data while making its own contribution to enterprise-wide information. Case studies of this method make compelling return-on-investment (ROI) arguments for updating key-based access control and asset management to electronically-tagged fobs and RFID lockers within a management software system.

A point I make to anybody who is

looking beyond traditional metal keys is that keys are of no value in themselves; their worth lies in what they give access to and the protection they afford to processes and assets. Access control in terms of door management progressed beyond the traditional key as soon as role-based discrimination between staff was made possible by the magstripe card and subsequently by proximity cards using RFID. High-level access control measures may now combine evaluation of a card submitted by the user with biometric scanning.

Delayed adoption of this technology to control the issue of keys and discriminate between staff

on a need-to-have basis has made key management a poor relation of access control. But companies such as Traka have pioneered fob systems in which use of keys is controlled and recorded with the fob – usually a nickel-plated cylinder – being attached to the keys via a tamper-proof metal seal. A uniquely-identifiable chip within the fob allows facility supervisors to impose hierarchical rights management on use of the key with the sophistication we associate with door control. Management software now allows the pooling of data between different sectors of the security spectrum, collaboration which makes the case for intelligent key management overwhelming.

Fobs serving as keysWorking with Tesco, Traka has further refined its offering (and increased potential for interaction with other security systems) by making the fob the key itself rather than just an attachment and using the fobs to control access to forklift trucks. Only a staff member with a fob confirming that they have an appropriate license and training certificate can even turn the ignition. In this way, a security mechanism permeates through health and safety. Similarly wide-reaching systems are in place at mines in South Africa run by Sasol. Stringent safety practices log a worker’s hours in areas where they may be exposed to contaminants, and when fob details indicate that a threshold has been reached the worker is unable to use vehicles and equipment.

Open architectureCommon standards are also being promoted by access control developers. Through the OpenAccess Alliance Program, Lenel is encouraging open

architecture through interfaces to its OnGuard™ platform and Traka has second-level certification. Open protocols are allowing exchange of many types of data. Exchange of information may soon extend to fire or emergency mustering since a staff member identifying themselves to an intelligent key cabinet to access an asset is often a more recent indication of their location than the opening of a door. This kind of functionality is at concept stage only but it underlines how building management systems will only be ‘intelligent’ once they swap data across the widest range of sources.

Open standards are the new closed sourceInteroperability between security sectors is a ‘given’ now and not a debate. Discerning clients see it as a starting point. Notably, access control is expected to report to CCTV with a standard example being the manner in which break-glass incidents either trigger CCTV recording or send a request for higher resolution. Consultants specifying new-build installations

now demand that access control, key systems and issue of assets should all integrate with CCTV, visitor management software and enterprise-wide online incident reporting.

As systems converge, contractors visiting a site on a regular basis can be granted some of the access rights of staff members and may be issued with tools and equipment. This functionality is available within Traka. It should also be noted that good system architecture now draws on the intelligence of field devices at the ‘edge’.

Traka supports integration into any open-standard video management system. This is often demonstrated in the casino environment, by customers in the financial sector with pinhole cameras installed in the facia of the key cabinet, and in entry and exit doors at data centres where Traka manages the keys to data racks. Not only is a worker unable to exit a data centre if they are still holding a key, but video integration connects ootage to the attempted exit and to usage of the key cabinet. >

Delayed adoption of this technology to control the issue of keys and discriminate between staff on a need-to-have basis has made key management a poor relation of access control.

Other triggered events might be to sound a bleeper or send an email to a manager. Working with surveillance specialists Visimetrics, Traka is able to use video analytics to ensure that supervisors assessing staff behaviour at key cabinets and asset lockers do not have to watch eventless footage. Disputes between staff as to asset usage can be resolved easily when key cabinets are integrated to CCTV with analytics.

Alarms can be scaled. A low-key alert such as a beacon might advise a staff member of an innocent mistake such as putting a key into a wrong position while an audible alarm would be activated by more unusual behaviour around a cabinet such as somebody opening and closing a door repeatedly with no associated key event. Graduated alarms of this kind are possible in the Traka 32 PC administration software.

Lenel integrationIn leading access control systems,

adding or editing an individual’s profile and rights allows for automated integration with Traka. This is at the heart of Traka’s interaction with Lenel and can be seen in a case study for a multinational electronic commerce company. At these sites, which can extend over one million square feet, a staff member’s card within the OnGuard system from Lenel not only allows them through physical security zones in the form of rack or picking areas but, as a result of integration with Traka software, determines what equipment (notably PDAs) can be issued to them. The fob becomes a key in its own right.

At the end of a shift, all data collected by the fob is downloaded into the system and if the PDA or scanner has not been properly returned the employee is unable to exit the facility. This is extended to control access to dock doors and to lorry-truck management so ensuring that lorries are secured to the dock prior to the door

being raised. In this way, Traka extends security functionality to compliance, health & safety and regulatory management.

ConclusionIf building subsystems such as access control and asset management are to improve they must continue to integrate and make good judgment calls based on any situation that might arise. In my inbox as I sum up is a claim by the University of Illinois at Chicago that one of the world’s best-known artificial intelligence units, ConceptNet4, has the intellect of a four-year-old. On the BMS front, current trends are more encouraging. Truly integrated solutions are bringing together access control, fire detection, biometric screening, photo ID and PA/VA under intelligent platforms with key and asset management proving versatile components in security and situational awareness. n For further information please visit www.traka.com

The Allianz Arena, Munich: no longer merely one of the largest and most attractive football

stadiums in Europe, it is now also one of the safest. The video surveillance system in the stadium in the Bavarian state capital has been thoroughly overhauled and converted to Dallmeier technology. At the heart of the system, Panomera® multifocal sensor technology is tasked with ensuring order in the North and South ends of the stadium.

The home stadium for FC Bayern München, which is where TSV 1860 München also play their home games, can accommodate over 71,000 spectators. In order to ensure the safety of fans and

players at all times, the existing video surveillance system has been completely modernised. “The system for controlling individual PTZ cameras was technologically temperamental and the resolution achieved was no longer equal to current needs. It would not have been commercially viable to modernise or expand the existing system, so we set out to find a new system”, says Richard Ponteles, Team Leader Technical FM, Department Operations at the Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH.

Then, the security managers saw the Dallmeier Panomera® multifocal sensor system at the “Sponsors Sports Venue Summit” – and they were convinced by the performance capabilities of this new camera technology.

An extensive planning phase followed, in which the technicians from Dallmeier visited the site a number of times to design a new video system that was perfectly adapted to the Allianz Arena.

Highest possible resolution for the North and South endsThe heart of this new video installation is the patented Panomera® system, a so-called multifocal sensor system. Unlike conventional cameras, which rely on single lenses, the multifocal sensor system operates with multiple lenses, each with a different focal length. This new sensor concept makes it possible to provide surveillance over a vast area with the highest possible resolution from a single

Football focus

installation point. “Even more distant individuals or objects are captured with the same quality resolution as those in the image foreground”, explains Roland Meier, Head of Panomera® at Dallmeier.

And there is one other important difference from conventional cameras: Whereas PTZ cameras only ever record the zone that is currently being viewed live, which means that the success of searches depends crucially on the respective operators, with Panomera® the entire image – that is to say the entire area under surveillance – is recorded continuously and at maximum resolution. This means that no details are lost, and a wide range of analysis and evaluation options are made possible.

The responsible staff members at the Allianz Arena were particularly concerned to provide security in the spectators’ areas in the North and South ends. So the Panomera® systems were mounted at a dizzying height: three cascaded Panomeras

behind the scoreboard cover the upper tier of the North stand, several more Panomeras on the lighting gantries are trained on the lower tiers of the North and South ends.

“The resolution of detail offered by Panomera® is simply incredible”, enthuses Richard Ponteles.

Integrating the existing installation with the Dallmeier systemIn all, about 100 cameras are used to oversee the entire stadium area including the stands, the inner building, entrances and exits, and even the car parks. In the course of the modernisation, depending on their condition the existing cameras were either replaced with Dallmeier dome cameras or box cameras with integrated infrared illumination, or were incorporated in the new system. “Previously, we worked with two management systems in order to be able to operate the cameras from the various manufacturers. But these have now been replaced with a single

system from Dallmeier, the SeMSy® Management System: the legacy cameras from multiple manufacturers, the Dallmeier HD cameras and the Panomera® cameras can all be controlled and analysed very simply with one management system”, recounts Richard Ponteles.

Four workstations, all equipped with the SeMSy® Management System and the Panomera® Viewer, have been set up in the command centre for the police. Another three workstations are located in the Welcome Area West, the Stewards’ Office and the Engineering Room. This enables the security staff and stewards to be deployed optimally in the stadium during matches, and even areas such as the stairwells or lifts can be overseen reliably. In addition, all status reports from the PGuard advance analysis software are routed to the workstation in the Engineering Room, so the staff there is informed automatically if a fan or a camera malfunctions for example. >

The Allianz Arena, Munich: one of the largest and most attractive football stadiums in Europe is now also one of the safest thanks to Dallmeier technology and Panomera® multifocal sensor technology

Reliable recordingSeveral DMX 1600 Smatrix were installed for the recordings from the legacy cameras, the Panomera® systems are stored on IPS 2400 Smavia. The IPS 2400 is a high-performance appliance with integrated storage system and high recording speed. The IPS 2400 is particularly notable for its extremely space-saving design as well as low power consumption and heat emission.

Resounding successManaging Director Jürgen Muth also considers the new video system a complete success: “The extremely high detail resolution, the capability of integrating our existing system, and particularly the intuitive operation of the system were the decisive factors for us in choosing Dallmeier. We are more than satisfied, both with the system and with

the consulting support we have received from Dallmeier.” n For further information please visit www.dallmeier.com

With the DDF4320HD-DN and DDF4520HDV-DN Dallmeier launches two new HD cameras with excellent low light performance.

The DDF4320HD-DN and the vandal-resistant DDF4520HDV-DN are hybrid dome cameras, providing HD video in real-time (720p/30) using the H.264 codec and supporting resolutions up to 1.3 megapixel. In addition to HD video over IP, the hybrid cameras provide for a simultaneous analogue SD (PAL/NTSC) video output via BNC (CVBS).

High low light performanceThe cameras are characterized by their Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) and ability to capture images with highest colour fidelity and superb detail reproduction even in scenes with a wide range of contrast and strong backlighting. The excellent low light performance also provides for clear and low noise images even in low light conditions.

Besides a comprehensive set of automatic and manual image optimization functions and many other setting options, the cameras feature automatic Day/Night operation supported by integrated ambient light sensing and a removable IR cut filter (ICR).

Motor-driven varifocal lensThe cameras are equipped with a fast (large maximum aperture) and motor-driven P-Iris

megapixel varifocal lens (F1.2 – F2.3 / 3 – 9 mm) which allows for the convenient adjustment and configuration of the zoom, focus and iris via the web browser. The novel P-Iris control technology, designed for a precise and automatic adjustment of the best iris position (optimum aperture), thereby realizes a significantly improved image quality compared to conventional DC auto iris lenses with excellent contrast, brilliant clarity and enhanced detail resolution combined with a greater depth of field. n

Winter is coming

Making sure your business’ security is up to scratch this winter is a good idea for a number of reasons. Here, James Kelly, explains why this is the case and provides key advice on how to use security systems to save costs, as well as protect your staff and business during this winter season.

During the cold season the UK reportedly sees a 20% increase in crimes, possibly because increased hours of darkness helps provide an essential cover to burglars and thieves, with premises often left unoccupied for longer periods of time due to festivities and holidays.

This is also the time when individual members of staff or lone workers may find themselves walking through vulnerable areas of your premises in the dark, putting their personal safety at risk.

Making sure business premises are well secured means taking active steps to prevent crimes such as vandalism, theft, attacks and intrusions that could threaten your business and staff.

There are also added value benefits when implementing new security measures. With low occupancy rates and a shift towards cost-savings and sustainability,

smarter security can also work with Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) to reduce energy usage.

Starting from the outsideSturdy physical security solutions such as fences, locks and barriers are all well-known methods that can be very effective in protecting the perimeter of business sites as well as the building itself. This is true at any time of the year, but particularly during darker nights, where a lack of light means intruders can go unnoticed more easily. The greatest advantage of using these solutions is

Page 39: In Security - November 2013

IN SECURITy I November 2013 I 37

that they provide a visual deterrent as well as an actual physical barrier that will slow intruders down considerably - if not put them off completely - giving on-site security personnel time to respond to any activity.

Integrating these solutions with detectors that trigger intruder alarm systems can provide an extra layer of security by helping warn off unwanted visitors as well as notifying personnel or neighbouring facilities of the intrusion. But in order to be effective, all these products need to be regularly reviewed to make sure they are meeting the needs of constantly evolving premises, and that they are always turned to the vulnerable areas of the site that require attention.

Adjusting the settingsCCTV cameras are another solution widely adopted by businesses across the country. Newer developments such as infrared thermal imaging and Remote Video Response Centres (RVRC) are making the technology more effective than ever, particularly in the dark, by alerting on-site personnel or remote control rooms of breaches in real time, allowing for a quick response.

CCTV solutions only work if correctly employed. With the start of winter it is important to adjust the settings and position of the cameras to match the change in natural lighting. For example, the lower winter sun may result in a glare shining directly into a camera, making the recordings unusable. Readjusting the position of the

camera is important to avoid this. Moreover, if the remote

monitoring and lighting systems are controlled separately, the timer on the lighting must be adjusted once British Summer Time ends. If these systems are out of sync, it may be some time before the lighting switches on, creating an unwanted gap in the footage that intruders could take advantage of.

Looking out for staffLighting is not important only to enable CCTV cameras to function properly during the hours of dark. Motion sensor security lighting can be an immediate deterrent to thieves and can help alert security personnel of movements in vulnerable areas. Moreover, fixed lighting in dark and ample spaces, such as car parks, >

Page 40: In Security - November 2013

38 I November 2013 I IN SECURITy

is important to make members of staff feel safe when walking through in the dark evenings. Making sure the settings are adjusted so that no time of night is left uncovered is once again an important, yet quick, precaution that all businesses should take.

Going one step further, as protecting staff is a key prerogative for any business, lone worker security alarms are also a great way to ensure the safety of those who may be required to work long hours alone in unoccupied or dark areas.

More than just securityTechnological advances and clever integration means that security systems are increasingly being used for more than just security. Perhaps underestimated is the role that solutions such as access control can play in helping

businesses save energy in a season where the need to heat buildings despite low occupancy rates are driving energy bills up.

Access control is used to monitor the movement of people, assets and vehicles in and out of a building, allowing for secure control over a site. When integrated with other systems, however, access control can be utilised to monitor areas of importance such as heating and lighting.

By integrating the security solution with Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) the two systems can work together to identify and then control energy usage in each part of the building, based on what areas are used at what times, and which members of staff are using a particular heating zone. Such integration meant that BSIA member ADT helped cut gas bills by 77% at a BT site in Castle

Warf. Subsequently, by reducing gas bills, this type of integration can also help reduce the company’s environmental footprint.

Turn to the expertsIn most cases, security proofing a business for the winter nights is a case of using what is already in place, but it is essential to review it to make sure it is fit for purpose.

Whether this is the case or whether you require a complete overhaul of your security strategy, knowing you are talking to a professional can make all the difference in ensuring your site and staff are completely protected this winter. BSIA members offer the very best of the security industry and provide an array of services to help battle these potential threats.n To locate a BSIA supplier near you visit www.bsia.co.uk/ find-a-local-security-company
