The facts:• One woman is murdered almost every week in Australia by a current
or former partner• Women are the majority of victims of intimate partner violence• Men are the majority of perpetrators of intimate partner violence
Join the national conversation Men play a crucial role in ending family violence.
Most men are not violent and we need them to speak out and be positive role models.
Men who are violent need to be able to engage with evidence-based interventions that will support change.
This conference will bring together people from all over the country who are doing work in this space – or wanting to do work in this space – to explore how this can be achieved.
Who will attend?
Representatives of the Government, Community, Police and Justice sectors with responsibility for:
• Domestic/Family Violence • Women • Children/Child Protection • Families
• Men’s Behaviour Change • Violence Prevention • Mental Health • Drug and Alcohol
This conference has been developed through consultation with sector representatives and our Advisory Panel:
Rosie Batty Family Violence Campaigner & 2015 Australian of the Year
Jacqui Watt, Chief Executive Officer No To Violence – Men’s Referral Service
“Men are the answer to combatting domestic and family violence against women. The majority of men are non-violent. We need those to speak out and provide positive models. And we need the ones that
are abusive to engage in evidence-based interventions to become safer partners and parents.”
- Dr Silke Meyer, Lecturer in Domestic & Family Violence Practice, CQU & Honorary Research Fellow, UQ – 15/7/16

3:50 KEYNOTE:
Recognising family violence perpetration as a parenting choice changes everything
In this presentation, the creator of the internationally recognised Safe and Together Model will discuss how a few key ideas can transform our approach to family violence intervention. These ideas include:• Practicing based on the idea that men who are violent impact child and
family functioning• Interventions with men who are violent need to hold him accountable as a
parent for the impact of his behaviours. • Interventions with men who are violent need to be based on high standards
for men as parents• Implementing these concepts cannot only change how we work with men
but also improve our ability to partner with adult and child domestic abuse survivors.

Bringing innovation into interrupting men’s violence to othersPre Conference Workshop B Monday 13th February 2017, 1:00pm – 4:00pm Price: $499 + GST
Your workshop leader:
Ken McMaster, Director, HMA
This workshop will explore a number of cutting edge ideas that augment current practice. The other place where innovation can support the work, is around blended learning solutions (e-learning, face-to-face, mentor led) to build a workforce capacity. As family violence continues to emerge from behind closed doors, it is clear that we need responses from a wide range of agencies across multiple sectors.
Why attend this workshop:• To understand how technology is changing the nature of abusive practices• To gain examples of recent innovations in intervention strategies for men
who engage in abusive practices• To be able to better match intervention with clients walking in the door/
portal• Consider how the rise of social media and technology challenges our own
practice
What you will take away by attending: • An understanding of the role that innovation can play in supporting
disruption of abusive practices• Ideas around upskilling staff to better prepare them for practice in an age
of social media

appeals which can inspire and mobilise them• Learn from Australian and international experience
What you will take away by attending: • Practical skills in engaging and changing men• Understanding of the spectrum of strategies which can be used to involve
men in violence prevention• Awareness of key debates and controversies and how to navigate them

Your workshop leaders:Nathan DeGuara, Men’s Referral Service Manager, No to Violence – Men’s Referral Service
Jacqui Watt, Chief Executive Office, No to Violence – Men’s Referral Service
Without specialised training in identifying the predominant aggressor and engaging without colluding, when that person is in fact the predominant aggressor, the counsellor’s response can lead to colluding with a man’s internal narrative that his partner is responsible for his behaviour, reinforcing his use of violence, power and control, and further endangering women and children.
Why attend this workshop:• Learn how to identify the predominant aggressor to appropriately support
the person using violence to change his behaviour, and help increase the safety of partners and children
• Learn more about the evidence base relating to the high prevalence of men within intimate partner relationships who present as victims who are in fact the predominant aggressors
What you will take away by attending:• Understand how to identify the predominant aggressor including the
ability to: identify smokescreens (a defence mechanism), red flags (that indicate a person is more likely to be the predominant aggressor) and blue flags (the person you are speaking to is more likely to be the victim)
