1. Who Am I? (Hook in activity)

Ask students who are you? After a brief pause, ask for volunteers to share their responses.

Instruct students to complete the Think, Pair, Share activity as follows:

Distribute the Who Am I? activity sheet and instruct students to independently list at least ten things about who they are.

Instruct students to partner with another student and share their responses with each other.

Ask for student pairs to volunteer to share the responses of their partner.

Instruct students to file their Who Am I? activity sheet in their notebooks.

Teacher note: Remind students to maintain a notebook which will be used throughout the course. All student activities should be kept in this notebook. This is a building reference guide.

Distribute the Interests, Attitudes, and Values K-W-L Chart to students and instruct them to complete it as follows:

In Column K, record what they already know about each topic.

In Column W, write any notes about what they wish to learn about each topic.

In Column L, Instruct students that they should record notes as they progress through the activities in this objective.

Introduces students to the topic and starts them talking and thinking about who they are

2. Using a digital projector, view Slides 1-2 of the 1.01 PowerPoint. Inform students that they will be discovering more about who they are by identifying what their interests, attitudes, and values are.

While viewing Slide 3 of the 1.01 PowerPoint, explain to students that they will be using self-assessment tools often referred to as inventories to learn more about their interests, attitudes, and values. Inform them that self-assessment through completion of inventories is a way to identify and understand who they are.

While viewing Slide 4 of the 1.01 PowerPoint, lead a discussion about interests. Have students brainstorm what interests are and give some examples. Write the responses on the board.

3. Instruct students to read Your Interests on page 120 in Learning for Earning textbook.

Once students have had a sufficient amount of time to complete the reading assignment, facilitate class discussion by asking students to share what they learned from their reading.

Explain to students that their interests are made up of the hobbies, activities, and subjects they like.

Instruct students to complete the Think, Pair, Share activity as follows:

Distribute the Hobbies, Activities, and Subjects activity sheet. Instruct students to Think about and list at least 5 hobbies, activities, and subjects that they like.

Once students have listed their hobbies, activities, and subjects, Pair students and instruct them to share their list with their partner.

Ask student volunteers to Share with the class any patterns they saw in their partner’s interests. Discuss the patterns.

4. Teacher preparation: Post four sheets of flip chart paper around the room with one of the following titles on each: People, Data, Things, and Ideas.

Explain to students that interests in hobbies, activities, and subjects they like can be categorized as interests in people, data, things, and ideas.

Instruct students to return to their partner from the previous activity and get out their Hobbies, Activities, and Subjects activity sheet

Distribute sticky notes to each student and instruct them to record their partner’s interests in hobbies, activities, and subjects they like. Students should use one sticky note per interest. They should not include names!

Instruct students to post their partner’s sticky notes on the flip chart paper that matches their partner’s category of interest.

After students have completed the postings, engage class in a discussion about the four interest categories:

People: Activities that involve helping others, teaching, making friends, babysitting, team sports, etc.

Data: Activities that involve record keeping, surfing the Internet, reading, experimenting, or researching.

Things: Activities that involve building or fixing things, cooking, working with your hands, and lawn care.

Ideas: Activities that involve writing stories or music, painting, inventing, and playing a musical instrument.

Reference the postings and facilitate a discussion about the categorization of their partners’ interests.

Ask these questions:

Are the interests in the right categories?

If they are, how do you know?

If they are not, what category should they be moved to? Why?

Once class decides the appropriate category, move the sticky notes to the appropriate flip chart.

6. Distribute the My Interests Summary activity sheet and instruct students to summarize what they learned about interests in general and about their personal interests.

Explain to students that there are numerous self-assessment interest inventories that can be found on the Internet by searching the key word interest inventories.

8. Distribute the Attitude Adds Up activity sheet to students and instruct them to evaluate their attitudes by completing the activity independently.

Once students have had sufficient time to complete the activity, divide the class into 4 groups.

Instruct students to designate a recorder and a reporter within each group.

Distribute one sheet of flip chart paper to each group and instruct students to discuss the results of their Attitude Adds Up activity and list ways to improve their attitudes. Instruct the recorder to list these ideas on the flip chart paper.

Instruct the reporter for each group to post the group’s list around the room and present his/her group’s ideas.

Instruct students to add to their individual lists any ideas that might be helpful to them that are not already on their lists.

Remind students to file their Attitude Adds Up activity sheet in their notebook.

9. Ask students to think about how attitude affects one’s outlook on life.

Explain to students that values can be categorized as relationships, responsibility, achievement, compassion, recognition, and courage.

Instruct students to complete the Think, Pair, Share activity as follows:

Pair with another student and instruct students to share their list and definitions with their partner.

Inform students that each section of the coat of arms represents the different things that they discovered about who they are as they relate to their interests, attitudes and values.

Instruct students to go through each section and write about what they have discovered about their interests, attitudes, values, and who they are.

Interests are the things you enjoy doing, including your likes and dislikes at work. Hobbies will help you plan for careers that best match who you are. The more interest you have in your work, the happier you will be on the job.

The following interest inventory activity will help you organize your likes and dislikes into four categories: people, data, things, or ideas.
