2 This month across the nation voters will take to the polls to place their votes for the next President of the United States. In Be Smart. Do Your

Part. VOTE!, Heather Ybarra provides a few tips to help Soldiers and their Families enable their ability to vote.

12 The day after Thanksgiving is now commonly referred to as Black Friday. Are you thinking about heading out in the crowds or would

you rather do shopping online in your pajamas? Heather Ybarra and Dee Dee Clark explore both options in Black Friday.

14 Warriors are a breed apart, willing to step forward to protect that which they cherish. November 11 marks a day set aside to

give thanks to all our Veterans. Heather Adams shares a few ways you can Thank a Veteran this year.

16 November is Month of the Military Family. In this month’s Spouse Corner, Heather Adams explains the One Constant for

Military Spouses. In this month’s Teen Corner, Oscar Ybarra looks at the positives of being a military child.

4 With the holidays upon us, we will spend time in the kitchen preparing our favorite meals for our friends and family. Are you looking for a new dessert recipe to try this year? In the

Be Smart.Do Your Part.

VOTE!By: Heather YbarraA few years ago, Kevin Costner starred in Swing Vote as Bud Johnson whose only real accomplishment appears to be his twelve year old daughter who is an overachiever. On Election Day, she sets off a series of events which result in the Presidential election coming down to Bud’s vote. Throughout the movie, Bud is swooned by both Presidential candidates and their affi liated parties to vote their way. It is after all, his vote that will decide who is the next President of the United States. Swing Vote is a comedy with a star studded cast going above and beyond to get across the message that every vote counts.

Each election year, a variety of marketing campaigns are created to encourage eligible citizens to get out and vote. US citizens are encouraged to vote and have their voice heard. The United States has only two requirements for individuals to be eligible to vote. The fi rst is to be a legal US Citizen. Second, the voter must be 18 years old. Individuals who meet these two criteria are eligible and encouraged to vote in both State and Federal Elections.

For many Americans, it is a relatively easy task to simply go to the polls on Election Day. For members of the Uniformed Services, this can create quite a challenge. Few Soldiers are legal residents in the state which they are stationed. Many members of the Military will not even be in country on Election Day. The Federal Voter Assistance Program is designed to assist Soldiers and their Family Members in having

their voice heard on

Election Day regardless of where they are currently stationed.

Determining the state of legal residents for those on Active Duty is the fi rst step in voting this election year. Many Soldiers believe their home of record is their state of legal residence; others believe it is the state in which they currently reside. When it actuality it can be either or neither of the above options. To make the process a little easier, Soldiers should ask the following questions: 1. What is the address on your LES? 2. Where have you registered to vote? 3. Where is your vehicle registered? 4. Where was your driver’s license issued?

Over the course of a Soldier’s career, the answers to these questions can change several times. If answering these questions does not provide you with a clear cut answer on what your state of legal residence is, contact the Voter Assistance Program for more clarifi cation.

Once you have determined your state of legal residence, you can begin the process of

applying for an absentee ballot. It is a fairly easy process and will result in

your voice being heard. The fi rst step is to submit a voter registration/

absentee ballot request to your state. These postage paid Federal Post Card

applications are available for all states at the Voter Assistance Program Offi ce. Some states do have an online version of the application available at www.fvap.com. Once a local state offi cial approves your request for an absentee ballot, the offi cial ballot will be mailed to your at your current address. Finally,

you simply mark your votes on the ballot and return via mail before the state deadline. Absentee ballots give you the choice of voting for individuals with no party affi liation or to vote party wide for all open seats.

This year’s election will be held November 6, 2012. For more information on how you can ensure you are registered to vote and have your voice heard this election year, head over the Voter Assistance Program Offi ce located on the 3rd fl oor of the Soldier Support Center to get your questions answered. Be Smart. Do your part. VOTE!

Wikipedia’s defi nition of Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In 2007, 135 million people participated in the Black Friday shopping rush. Most of the retailers open at 5 a.m. or even earlier.

While the name Black Friday was derived from the concept of the positive impact the day has on retailers’ earnings, many associate Black Friday with a negative connotation. The two different defi nitions of Black Friday also lead to two different perceptions in the consumer mind. So it comes as no surprise that DeeDee and I also have two different perceptions of Black Friday. You may agree with DeeDee or you may agree with me, but either way here are some valuable tips to make your Black Friday shopping experience the most enjoyable yet!

DeeDee says “Plan early and shop online”While I have participated in several Black Friday shopping excursions which have been very successful at saving me a lot of money, I began to wonder if it was worth the effort of getting up as early as 3 a.m. to wait in line to get into the stores as well as to check out. And let’s not forget the traffi c. In many cities, it is not uncommon to see shoppers lined up for hours before stores open.

After many years of participating in Black Friday shopping, I have learned how to avoid the crowds and still save money. Once I discovered that many stores with “Black Friday Deals” allow you to purchase items online at 12:01 a.m. for the same low price, I decided to stay home and steer clear of the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. O n e o f

my friends actually purchased all of the games and electronics he wanted online Thursday night. He simply had to pick the items up at the store the next day - at his convenience. Many stores also offer free shipping as a part of their deals.

Being an experienced shopper, I have learned to start early to avoid the rush and still get great prices. I often start my compiling my shopping list in mid-July. Usually online I can fi nd a coupon code to receive a discount and free shipping to save me even more money. By the time November comes around, my niece, nephew and son usually start asking for the most popular toys b e i n g advertised. The secret

to getting the “must have” toys

of the year is to start looking

for them as early as poss ib le. I usually g o o n l i n e a n d

Black Friday

Page 13

Five Tips to In Store Shopping Success:1. Scrub your shopping lists against store ads prior to going out. Know what stores offer which items at the lowest prices. Our lists were divided by stores not items and it is ok to have an item listed under more than one store.2. If you see the item you want, buy it! If another store has it later for cheaper, you can always return the fi rst one you purchased.3. Layout your day based on the stores you want to visit. We were able to visit three major stores and get something to eat without moving the truck once by parking in a central location.4. When you get to the store, one person stands in line while the other shops. Then, switch spots. This reduces your time standing in line.5. Pack snacks…food is fuel after all!

search for the toy or game at the lowest price and place my order way in advance to avoid paying the higher marked up prices or the dreaded “out of stock” status. One year I did not purchase an item my son “really” wanted early enough. I ended up paying a thirty percent mark-up for the item on an auction site. After all, it was the number one item on his shopping list and Santa never lets him down!

So, take my advice…stay in your jammies, log on to your computer and save! Save money, save time, and save the rest of the night for sleep.

Heather says, “It’s not just about the deals, it’s about the experience!”Black Friday shopping has been a part of my Thanksgiving ritual since long before it had an offi cial name. My mom, aunt, cousin and I would leave the boys at home to hang the decorations and watch football as we hit the malls shopping for deals. Of course, my “mission” on Black Friday has changed from Mom buying me c l o t h e s to me

fulfi lling the wish lists of my three children.

A recent trip back to Clarksville, Tennessee allowed me to go in search of the sales with my dearest friend, Denice. The day, or perhaps I should say night, was an experience we both thoroughly enjoyed and would do again every year - in a heartbeat. After a quick shower to freshen up, we headed out just before 1 a.m. without having had any sleep since we got up to put the turkey in the oven fi rst thing Thursday morning. Dressed in layers prepared for the changing of temperatures throughout the day, shopping lists sorted by store and coffee in hand, we were ready to face the day. First stop, a major toy retailer.

Was there a line to get in the store? Yes, of course there was! But, then again, it was the only one open that early and it took us less than 30 minutes to get the doors. Was there a line to stand in as we waited to check out? Yes, of course there was! But, that was all to be expected. We enjoyed each other’s company, chatted with those in line near us, snagged up nearly everything (and then some) on that stores list, and saved a ton while doing it all.

After a couple hours, we made it through with much success and headed out to get grab something to eat. After all, by 4 a.m. we were in the need of some nourishment to keep us

going on our mission. We scrubbed our lists as we ate and then headed out to complete our mission. Seven more hours of shopping were ahead of us before meeting up with friends for lunch. With each stop we learned a lesson we took with us to the next store. We returned home about 3 p.m. – a mere 14 hours later

– loaded down with goodies for our kids, husbands and of course, ourselves.

The experience. The day was full of fun, deals and great company. We knew there would be

lines; we knew there would be traffi c. We took it all in stride and look forward to the next time we

can enjoy our Black Friday experience together.

So, whether you chose to stay at home and shop on line, or grab a friend and head out to face the experience…make the day yours! GOOD LUCK AND

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Warriors are a breed apart, willing to

step forward to protect that which they cherish on behalf of those who, for

whatever reason, cannot protect themselves, most of the time being cut from the same cloth. They serve because their father served or brother or sister.

Some families have a long and distinguished history of military service which includes fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts or a combination of all. Many military families have multiple people serving at one time.

Ranging from a few years, to a lifetime of service, Soldiers past and present deserve to be appreciated and remembered. Regardless of when or where they may have served, every Soldier, Airman, Sailor and Marine has given a portion of themselves to their country and fellow citizens. Some, regrettably, have selfl essly given their last full measure, exchanging their lives and unfulfi lled future to ensure the future for those they love and serve.

So this Veterans Day please remember to enrich or enhance a Veteran:

1. Say Thank You – Just the simple act of saying “Thank you for your service” goes a long way with Veterans. Throw in a handshake too; you’re bound to see a smile on their face, which will make it all worth it.

2. Volunteer – Do something for the Veterans in your community. What’s an hour of your time for the sacrifi ces they’ve made? Checkout ACS or visit your local VA.

3. Donate – Make a small donation today to one of the many fantastic organizations out there that help Veterans each and every day.

4. Pay for Lunch – One of my husband’s fondest memories while serving was actually when a complete stranger came up to him and a group of three of his buddies and paid for their lunch. They were in their ACU’s eating in the airport on their way out to Iraq. He simply walked up said “We appreciate what you guys are doing (pointing to the table of three other men appearing to be traveling on business), this one’s on us.” Offer to pay for a Veteran’s meal today.

5. Never Forget – One of the biggest things you can do, and Veterans will agree, is to make the most out of the opportunity you’ve been given. Our freedoms have been paved with the sacrifi ces of our Soldiers and they did so for all of us to enjoy this great country; let’s

not forget that or take it for granted.

Being a military spouse means that life stands still when the Country needs your husband or wife. Being a military spouse means rumors become not just an annoyance but a form of subconscious truth and change. It means being a Daddy, a Mommy, and a friend. It means helping your children

understand that the person who comes and goes so often is a father, a mother, a husband or wife. He or she doesn’t just get angry and quiet, but cries and laughs. The sacrifi ces of a military family are endless, and only understood by those that are in the same position. The worries are uninterrupted. The changes are the only constant thing you have in your life…..except for the love. The LOVE proves its strength time and time again. It reaches across deserts, it fl oats over bullets. It spills out of packages and transmits over telephones. It

acts as the glue that keeps the frustrated spouse hanging on. It is the only reason, sometimes, for waiting so long. It connects those few that

share common ground. It allows that fl eeting glimpse of happiness, that light in all of the darkness….the light that is possible because of

the women involved, the children involved, the men involved. The light that is possible because of us, military spouses.

The One Constant for a Military Spouse

So this month we are celebrating Month of The Military Family, which is honoring what the Families of the military do in life. There are many poistive and negative things for one. You are going to be moving a lot across the states some times even countries. When you move you have the chance to meet new people and make twice as many friends as before you moved. You get to make new goals for yourself and often join new clubs and sports.

When moving you get the chance to know people all over the country or world. I personally know people from North Carlina, Tennessee, Washington, California, Germany, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Hawaii, and more. You also get introduced to new sports and clubs like math, wrestling, soccer, science, and many more. Joining sports and clubs can get you farther in life because who knows you could play soccer for you middle school and end up being the number one soccer player in the world.

Although you might thinks it sucks because you are always moving think of it as a gift because you could end up learning the sports or club subject from at least three different places. In which would make you better than just going by one place. So overall being in the military can be way better than what you might have thought because you might only look at the negative stuff instead of the positive.
