Letter from the Chair
2014 is rapidly drawing to a close. For me personally it has been an annus horribilis but for show and
agility Beagles in South Africa it has been an annus pretty goodus. Show entries have stabilised, we usually
have either the largest or second largest numerical entry in the hound group and we have seen a number of
different Beagles being awarded BIS & RBIS in the minor groups, just the big one has eluded us, perhaps 2015
will be the year when BIS is awarded to a Beagle again, in the 1980’s this was quite a regular occurrence.
Imports seen in the show ring have come from the States, New Zealand, and Hungary. Entries at FCI shows
have also increased. Two Beagles represented South Africa at the Agility World Cup in Luxembourg.
Our club is going from strength to strength. Membership is creeping up, but not fast enough. We were able
to hold two open shows this year, both attracted entries in excess of 20 Beagles, but we need to attract an
entry of 30 hounds before we can consider holding a Championship Show. Our judges for both these shows
were internationally recognised Beagle specialists, our own Sylvia Tutchener (ex UK) and Sue Bownds of
Australia, who I believe in 2015 will be officiating at The Beagle Club (UK) 125th anniversary show. If any of
you can make it overseas in 2015, this is the show to attend. In addition to the open shows we also staged a
very successful fun day at Goldfields which included a scenting demo by the Hunt Club, this event drew an
entry of over 70 Beagles, wow, if only we could have these numbers in the show ring. In addition to the two
judges mentioned above we were also very lucky to have the following breed specialists judge at
Championship shows, Marion Watson (Aus), Sue Carter, Jack Peden, Elaine Ty (Phill.), Heather Jones (Aus),
and Audrey Hauptfleisch. It is to be hoped that we have a similar number of breed specialists in 2015.
While Beagles are in the top ten breeds by registration numbers, our show entries don’t reflect this. The
reason being that the majority of these registrations come from breeders whose only interest is in making
money from the breed, which is contrary to KUSA ethics. Using the statistics for 2012 & 2014 the top ten
breeders (nine in 2014) -numerically by numbers of puppies registered - have never set foot in the show ring.
These are also some of the breeders who are selling puppies at cut prices and advertising unregistered
beagles as well (contrary to KUSA rules). The cost of rearing a Beagle puppy to 8 weeks, provided there are
no complications, has been established at R3000 – R4000, this figure has been arrived at in consultation with
a veterinary surgeon. Anyone selling a puppy below that price is cutting corners along the line. Equally at the
other end of the scale there are breeders who are selling puppies at R8000 plus, these breeders again are
just in it for the money. The breeders who import dogs to widen the gene pool, test their breeding stock for
genetic disorders, consult specialists on problems, have researched breeding programs, who set benchmarks
to attain minimum standards and who are constantly striving to improve the breed through showing are
from midway to the bottom end of the scale. Ironically it is these breeders who are often reviled on social
networks and websites. In 2015 we hope to be publishing breed statistics on a quarterly basis and where we
have evidence of abuse of KUSA rules and regulations hope to take the matter further. Breed restrictions
have obviously not worked and in my view, are probably one of the causes of this excessive breeding.
Membership subscriptions are now due. While there is a steady trickle of subscriptions coming in, this is a
reminder to existing members to renew and enthusiasts wishing to join, to fill in and return the membership
application form together with subscription. Anyone wanting a pack who has not received one should
contact a member of the com mittee, see page 1 for contact details. Please encourage all Beagle owners that

you know to join as we need members and if we are to hold a Championship Show in the future we need
more Beagle exhibitors in the show ring.
Congratulations to all the winners of the various categories of the Beagle of the Year competition. Prizes will
be handed out after judging BIS at the Beagle Association Open Show to be held on the 25th January 2014 at
Goldfields Showgrounds. This year the most closely contested category was Sire of the Year, only 6 points
separate the top 3, and 1 between first & second, the winner once again being an imported dog from
England. From this year we are introducing a new category, namely Working Beagle of the Year. Additionally
anyone, members or exhibitors, wishing to propose changes to the Beagle of the Year competition should
submit their proposals to the committee for consideration, not later than the 31st January 2015.
Schedules will be sent out this month for the open show, please encourage as many beagle owners as
possible to attend. Our judge for this show will be Dachshund breeder & exhibitor, Jetty Botes-Erasmus from
the Western Province. Our AGM is scheduled for 21st March 2015, please see the website & facebook page
for further details.
Our website is currently in a state of flux but we hope to rectify this situation shortly but it is live, and
improving all the time so visit it occasionally to check our progress. http://thebeagleassociation.co.za
To avoid disappointment don’t forget to book your front page ads early – March, June & September 2015 are
still available.

Living with a Beagle
Introduction
I am frequently asked why there are so many Beagles up for rehoming. My answers to this are - many
breeders are only interested in a quick sale and don’t bother to discuss the physical and psychological
needs of the Beagle with prospective buyers, and many buyers don’t bother to research the breed they
are buying and just want a cute dog for little Johnny to play with or feel they need a dog as an accessory
to complete the happy family picture.
When you buy a puppy you are bringing a new member into your family that may be with you for up to
15 years , it is not a matter to be taken lightly. What follows are some guidelines, it is not intended to be
an all- encompassing guide, but it may give prospective owners an insight on living with Beagles as
family members. The breeders amongst you may wish to pass this guideline on to their puppy buyers.
Temperament
Temperament is the most important issue to be considered and is often raised by parents with young
children. When an eight week to twelve week old puppy comes into a home where there are young
children, the puppy needs to be protected, it is not a toy but a living being, it needs its own space & it
needs quiet times as well as play times - young children with the best will in the world can damage a
young puppy very easily. The breed standard states – “amiable and alert, showing no aggression or
timidity”. Make sure your beagle knows who their pack leader is – that’s you. When out walking on
neutral territory Beagles may bark when they see another dog approaching, but when they get close up
they usually are very friendly. Some male Beagles, particularly when on their own territory, be it on their
home ground, owners car or in their crate at shows, may be a bit intolerant of other males getting too
close but overall as a breed, temperament is excellent.
Beagles crave company, your family is their pack. A Beagle left alone all day makes for a miserable,
bored and destructive dog.
As for the dog versus bitch debate – that must be a matter of personal choice. The dogs are every bit as
affectionate as the bitches and may be less bother overall.
Trainability
Stubbornness and trainability are questions that are sometimes crop up from prospective buyers who
have done a little research. Yes they are stubborn, yes they do take time to train, but with patience and
perseverance they can be trained. There are Beagles who do agility, dog jumping and obedience work all
of which require a fairly high level of training. Beagles are food driven and a fair measure of success can
be achieving using the reward system of training. Yes they can be walked off the lead and will come on
the recall if you select your exercise area carefully and put in some training. As with most things you will
get out of it what you put in (and a pocketful of biscuits works wonders).
6
Crates
Crates and crate training are another question often raised. I personally would never be without crates
for my Beagles. The crate is useful for toilet training puppies and a safe place for puppies for short
periods if they cannot be supervised. The crate becomes the dogs retreat, its private space, they will go
in voluntarily to snooze or retreat. When you have more than one dog, crates can be used for feeding to
prevent stealing/ squabbles amongst greedy eaters. Crates also present a safe means of safely
transporting your dog in the car. They should never be considered as a place to go to for punishment,
nor used to enclose a dog for long periods in your absence.
Size – A medium sized crate is suitable for a single Beagle. If the crate is going to double as a bed and
you have more than one dog, as Beagles like to cuddle up together, a large crate is better. Type – In our
climate the open wire crates are preferable as they are cooler and can be covered with a blanket for
additional warmth & privacy.
Food
No discussion about Beagles is complete without mentioning food. Most breeds are good eaters and
opportunists when something tasty comes their way, but Beagles raise that to a whole new level. Your
kitchen bin needs to be behind a firmly closed cupboard door, the alternative is to have the contents
scattered across the kitchen floor at every opportunity.
Beagles put on weight very easily and it’s very hard to take it off again. Keep daily treats to minimum &
limit to a chew, a biscuit or a piece of apple or carrot.
When you get your puppy the breeder will advise on frequency and brand of food. As adults most
Beagles seem to do best on two equal sized meals a day. If you decide to change the brand of food do it
gradually.
Exercise
While Beagles do not necessarily need a large garden, they do need lots of exercise. Do not over
exercise young pups but build it up gradually. For those living on a small property a daily walk of at least
half an hour is essential. All Beagles, irrespective of the size of their garden, relish the stimulation that a
trip to the outside world gives, whether it be a walk around the block, a run in the park or beach, or just
a ride in the car to the shops. There are also opportunities for Beagles to participate in dog sports, such
as breed showing, agility, dog jumping, obedience, dancing and scent hunting which mostly they
thoroughly enjoy- so why not consider trying your hand at one or more.
Maintenance
Maintenance is a plus point as far as Beagles are concerned. They are a low maintenance breed in
comparison to a lot of others. Their coats are short and weatherproof and easily wiped down or dried
off with a quick rub. A daily brush will remove dead hairs, nails should be clipped on a monthly basis but
the frequency will depend on the surfaces they run on. Teeth brushed weekly will help prevent dental
decay as will regular chew treats.
7
Garden
Beagles are the magicians of the doggy world – they’re great at disappearing – so a thorough and
regular check of your perimeter fencing/walling is essential to make it escape proof. Also ensure that
there is source of clean, fresh water at all times and there is weatherproof shelter from the elements.

Agility
A group of enthusiasts in Kwazulu Natal recently arranged a fun day with agility – its great to see other
Beagles starting with agility and hopefully this will snowball.
Here in Gauteng Bernie & Zoe qualified for the SA Dog Jumping Championships. Bernie gained a very
creditable third in semi final 1.

National Beagle of the Year Competition
The National Beagle of the Year is a competition to determine the Beagle that has won the most Best of
Breeds & Reserve Best of Breeds during the course of any one show year, it is not a competition to
determine the dog that has beaten the most other dogs and differs from other competitions in that it
takes into account Reserve Best of Breeds. In addition to the Beagle of the Year there are various other
categories which are validated by other KUSA recognised awards, eg Veteran, Junior, Puppy, Baby
Puppy, Neutered Dog, as well as recognition given to Sires, Dams & Breeders of the top dogs. The Beagle
of the Year is free and all Beagles exhibited at Championship Shows throughout South Africa
automatically qualify
The points allocation can be obtained from the Chairman by interested parties
Please note The Beagle Association does an internal audit to ensure accuracy of these leaderboards
according to the points allocation, and based on these results the awards will be made at the year
end, however should any exhibitor have a query about their dogs points please contact us and we will
check that no error has occurred.

……………..and Now
by Tanya De Ville
6.30am – It’s a frosty winters morning in a mountain range in Gauteng. The air is crisp, the grass crunches under foot, the weak sun has not yet risen above the mountains……everything is calm, cold and quiet. Then there is the baying of a Beagle on a scent… and another Beagle, and another, and a whole pack of little hounds, tails up , noses down, throats open. All of a sudden the peace of an early Sunday morning is gone.
This is a typical Sunday morning for a pack of Gauteng Beaglers and their scent hunting hounds.
Every second Sunday, during the winter months, approximately 50 Beaglers and their Beagles come together for a scent hunt. The scent is made up of pilchards in tomato sauce in a bag, and dragged on foot, along a 1.0 to 1.5km trail over mountains and through valleys. tHe scent is laid by a team of about 5 fit walkers and led by our huntmaster. Before they set off on their trail, all of the Beagles are scented – and allowed to have a sniff of the pilchard bag. The team of walkers walk the line in about 30 to 40 minutes. Once they have reached the end of their line, they find a spot under some trees, conceal themselves and signal to the rest of the pack that they are ready. The pack of the excited baying Beagles lines up, rearing to go. A horn is blown and the hounds are released. What excitement! The handlers remain still and quiet so as not to disturb the hounds on the trail. The pack of excited Beagles follow the pilchard scent through the mountains at a rapid rate. The fastest Beagles finish the line in about half the time it took the huntmaster and his team to lay the line. The handlers at the beginning of the line stay quiet and watch the pack trickle in to the finish line. Once the Beagles are off the line, the handlers make their way, on foot, to the finish line and get their hounds back on lead, give them some water and the scores are read. The pack runs five lines per morning.
Scores are awarded for each line and tallied up at the end of the season. The ten Beagles with the highest scores for the year are invited to take part in the Top Ten Challenge where they run one challenging line of approximately 7 kilometres…..the excitement on the morning of Top Ten is palpable, even though the Beagles are oblivious to their accomplishment of making the cut!
The hunt season ends in a swanky dinner and prizegiving evening where we pay tribute to our lovely little hounds and their achievements in the field.
The hunts are a great form of exercise for energetic Beagles who just love doing what they are bred to do. Nothing beats the sight of a Beagle with a long pink tongue, grinning from floppy ear to floppy ear as they run through the mountains doing their job.
The Gauteng pack ranges in age from very young (pups can start running with the pack from 9 months old) to the golden oldies – well over ten years old – who show the youngsters they still have it.
The scent hunts a really fun morning out with our happy hounds.
