Review Day—Friday 28th November As you know from your Planner, Friday 28th November has been allocated for our annual Review Day. This is a day when the normal school timetable is suspended and you meet with your tutors to consider your progress and set targets and action points for the future.
School buses will not be available and you will need to make your own travel arrangements in time for your appointment.
You must attend your appointment, unless you are ill and not fit for school. You must also attend in school uniform at a time allocated by your tutor and the process will take approximately half an hour. Each year group will receive specific instructions from their Year Leader about producing a presentation for your tutor. Like last year, in preparation for Review Day, you will be expected to produce a presentation to show your tutor called #MyLearning. Click here to see more information on what is expected of you.
You should undertake independent learning during the rest of the day. Examples of independent learning are available on the school web site under each curriculum area and on Realsmart in the student section by Key Stage Hub.
Calling all Dancers! You are invited to attend a contemporary dance workshop run by Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). The workshop is free of charge and will take place in school on Monday 8th December 2014 3-5pm (in the Gym). NSCD are a Centre for Advance Training in Dance and run the Yorkshire Young Dancers (YYD) scheme. The YYD and NSCD aim to provide 13-17 year olds access to high quality dance training whilst developing creative potential as dancers. The workshop at Ilkley Grammar School offers an opportunity for students to experience contemporary dance and to consider if the YYD scheme would be suitable for them. A dance artist from NSCD will deliver a 2 hour workshop based on contemporary technique and choreography. This workshop also acts as a preliminary audition onto the YYD scheme. If you would like to take part then please ask Miss Watson for a letter which needs to be signed and returned by parents/carers. The deadline to confirm a workshop place is 27th November.
Please be aware to prepare for the day we will have on long registration on Friday 21st November (Monday’s timings).
Year 7 and 8 Flu Vaccine All students in Year 7 and 8 should have received their letters for the flu vaccine. These letters have been sent home requesting parental consent for you to have the nasal spray that will be administered on Friday 6th December in C8.
You can only receive the vaccine if you return a signed consent letter.

Congratulations to Ellis Thompson (7ASH) who is the first student in the whole school to achieve his Bronze Certificate (40 credits).
Well played to our Y15 rugby team who competed against Guiseley School in the NatWest Vase on Monday. It was a close match with the final score ending IGS 21-28 Guiseley.
Well done to Arthur Ashcroft (8PDH), Mark Rennison (8PDH), Pedram Habibzadeh (8PDH), Joe Higgitt (8PDH) and Vlad Tirdea (8PB) for organising a successful football match last Friday after school. The match was organised to raise money for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign as part of the boys’ ‘Another Football is Possible’ project. The boys raised £20.20 with donations still coming in. A hard-fought and fast-paced match ended 6-5, finishing in extra time thanks to a ‘golden goal’ from Robert Johnson (7DJS). Thanks to all who played, to Harry Watson (9KL) for volunteering as a referee and to the PE department for sorting out the bus and equipment.

Congratulations to Jamie Simpson-Kidd (8PB) who won a silver medal at the Taekwondo Commonwealth Championships 2014 in Edinburgh for Team England. Jamie beat Australian, Mackenzie Spiers in his first match and went on to beat one of his England team mates, Tyler Barwell in the semi finals. The final was between himself and another team England athlete Matthew Guest, with Jamie only just losing out on the gold.
Well done Jamie!

Well done to our Year 9 basketball team who played in the Bradford Schools’ play-off finals on Wednesday night. The boys played incredibly well and performed superbly as a team. Joe Haigh (9GPS) and Ralph Atkinson (9CW) have written the match report.
The team began their campaign confidently, with an emphatic win against Kings. Team captain Ralph Atkinson opened the scoring, followed by baskets from Adam Hayes, Patryk Bialkowski, Adam Cooke and Cameron Shankland.
In the second game however, the IGS team found themselves engaged in an end to end struggle. Every time one team scored the other went and equalised soon after. IGS came excruciatingly close to taking the three points, but eventually lost out to Thornton by a last second free throw. Points were scored by Ralph Atkinson (5), Adam Hayes (4) and Jacob Cooke (2).
In the final game IGS were up against their arch enemies, Beckfoot. Even with points from Ralph Atkinson (4), Patryk Bialkowski (2), Adam Hayes (2) and Matthew Spencer (2) it was still not enough to overcome the eventual tournament winners, Beckfoot.
IGS finished as runners up. Joe Haigh and Ralph Atkinson

Well done to Emma Powell (9JP) who secured 2nd place in the seniors category at Rope Race Manchester. Her favourite route was climbing up a telegraph pole onto a football shaped wooden ball (both moving around) then up onto fake ice blocks to the top . Emma’s next competition is on 29th November at The Leeds Wall...good luck Emma!
Congratulations to our Cross Country Team who were in action last Wednesday at Cliffe Castle, Keighley. All runners did really well. Bethan Morley (8PDH) came 2nd in her age group and Rachel Scott (8PDH) was placed 5th. Photograph courtesy of Woodentops.

Well done to our orienteers who competed in the British Schools Orienteering Championships on Sunday 16th November. In total, 640 students participated in the event with students coming from all around the UK - Torquay, Banchory and Ulverstone, to name but a few. Ilkley Grammar School was represented by eight athletes across the year groups: Eloise Hall (7PO), Laura King (11FV), Lucy Jacques (11AJH), Robbie Matthews (8PB), Lucy Haines (11VEB), Matthew Hall (9CW), Daniel Hayes (12PC) and Ruaridh Mon-Williams (12PC).
Although the event took place on a somewhat cold and very grey day this did not dampen the spirits of those participating, who did so with enthusiasm and vigour.
The IGS team did the school proud not just with their positive cheerful attitude but with a great set of results.
The three Year 11 girls made up a competitive team and stormed to victory, winning the team prize in their age category. Lucy Haines lead the team home in 1st position, Laura King was in 10th position and Lucy Jacques in 17th, which was particularly impressive given she is relatively new to the sport of orienteering. Although IGS were unable to make up teams in the other year groups, there were strong individual performances .
Eloise and Matthew Hall both finished near the top of their field in 6th place (Year 7 girls’ and Year 9 boys’ respectively), Robbie Matthews had a great run to finish in 17th position in a particularly strong field of over 60 competitors and Ruaridh Mon-Williams and Daniel Hayes produced some solid results with 7th and 16th place respectively.
Well played to our Year 8 footballers who took part in a Football Tournament at St Mary’s School on Wednesday night where 15 Year 8 boys made their IGS football debuts.
Prince Henry’s, St Mary’s, Guiseley and IGS fielded two 7-a-side teams and they played a round robin tournament. Despite not recording a win, the IGS sides were in very high spirits and played some lovely football. They are looking forward to their next run out in the new year.

Year 11 Craven College Taster Day We are organising a Taster Day at Craven College on Wednesday 3rd December. We will leave school promptly at 8.30am and return for 3pm for school buses. Students will not be required to wear uniform to the Taster Day.
Please sign up for 2 sessions; we recommend you try a course to find out if it’s a realistic option for you next year. You can apply for more than 1 course at a college. Courses at college are very different from school and you will need a post 16 pathway and a back-up plan. For any questions or queries about the Taster Day or courses, please see Mrs Mitchell in the Key Stage 4 Hub.
GCSE Overview
Year 11 Revision Technique—Testing yourself This week’s technique is particularly important to ensure the effectiveness of the revision you have done. Please check out the links and try the technique for yourself. You will be surprised at how much more you remember from your revision if you do it right.
Storage method used. Repetition
What is it? A test for checking if your revision is EFFECTIVE.
What to do? Test yourself again and again on work that you have
learned with increasing gaps between tests. E.g. spend 10 minutes at the start of a revision session
testing yourself on what you revised yesterday. Spend 5 minutes a couple of days later, 2 minutes a week later. You will be amazed at how much more you remember.
Handy hints: If you can’t remember the
information at any point in the cycle, then re-learn it and go back to start.

Careers Using Biology Overview: Pursuing a career in Biology can be immensely rewarding and exciting. Biologists learn how living things work; how they interact with one another and how they evolve. They could study the evolution, natural history and conservation of plants and animals investigate the interactions of living organisms with light, the environment or each other or have careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology or medical research. Their work increases our understanding about the natural world in which we live and helps us address issues of personal well being and worldwide concern such as environmental degradation, threats to human health and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies. What do Biologists do?: There are several career paths you can follow including:
Research Research Biologists study the natural world using the latest
scientific tools and techniques in both laboratory settings and the natural environment to understand how living systems work.
Health Care Biologists may develop public health campaigns to defeat illnesses
such as tuberculosis, AIDS, cancer and heart disease.
Veterinarians tend to sick and injured animals. Doctors, dentists, nurses and other health care professionals maintain the general health and well being of their patients.
Environmental Management and Conservation
This involves solving environmental problems and conserving the natural world for future generations. National Park Wardens/Officers help preserve their natural resources and educate the general public. Zoo and aquarium biologists carry out endangered species recovery programmes and serve as a vital education resource to the general public. Management and conservation biologists often work with members of the community such as landowners and special interest groups. There are also openings with not-for-profit conservation organisations, private ecological consulting firms or wildlife rehabilitation centres at home and abroad.
Education Life science educators enjoy working with people and
encouraging them to learn new things, whether in a classroom, a research lab, the field or a museum.
There are jobs in Colleges and Universities, Primary and Secondary Schools, Science Museums, Zoos, Aquariums, Parks and Nature Centres. Other career opportunities involving Biology exist within: Biotechnology, Forensic Science, Politics and Policy making, Business and Industry, Economics, Science Writing and Communication and Art.

Prospects (the education, employment and training, employee-owned-mutual company) and E3 Bradford (a partnership between business, education providers alongside Bradford Chamber of Commerce and Bradford Council, have sponsored a new film encouraging local young people to consider becoming entrepreneurs. This coincides with Global Entrepreneurship week (17-23 November), which is the largest campaign in the world to promote the benefits of becoming an entrepreneur and the positive contribution they make to the economy. The video, called Bradford Born, Bred and in Business, includes interviews with eight local entrepreneurs. They discuss how they became entrepreneurs and why young people should consider becoming one. In addition to the film, local young people interested in becoming an entrepreneur can also join the Facebook page called ‘Bradford Talent’ to find advice and information on how to start a business. The Bradford Born, Bred and in Business film can be watched on YouTube here. This film is one of the initiatives that Prospects runs in Yorkshire and the Humber to tackle youth unemployment in the region. Another is ‘18 Works’, a free service linking employers who have vacancies with young people wanting work. Employers simply submit their vacancies to the ‘18 Works’ website. Vacancies are then promoted to young people via the website, social media and through the ‘18 Works’ team’s extensive network of schools, universities and other organisations working with young people. Find out more about ‘18 Works’ by visiting their website www.18works.co.uk.
For more information on this, please see Mrs Mitchell, Careers Coordinator, based in KS4 Hub.
Are you the next young entrepreneur in
Bradford?
