Dear Friends of Caroline Center,

In a year when much of the news has been about what we believe divides us – you, our generous donors, have shown us the elegance and durability of all that unites us.

Your abiding commitment to the wholeness of what we do at Caroline Center heals fractures.Your trust and confidence in the effectiveness of what we do creates change. And, your freelygiven gifts of every kind insure our staying power. For all of these blessings, and so muchmore, we are grateful to you for your generosity this past year.

It is difficult sometimes to grasp a simple truth – even when that truth is right in front of us.This truth was observed by Malala Yousafzai when she was just 16 years old – “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen, can change the world.” Each and every day at Caroline Cen-ter, we see Malala’s wisdom manifest at Caroline Center through tangible and visible change.Change that is profound and lasting. Change that is happening in real time. One woman, one teacher, and one amazing education at a time.

We hope that you will take a few moments as you peruse this Annual Report to read the in-terview with Caroline Center donors Charles and Sandra Zeiler. Their generosity and com-mitment clearly demonstrate that whatever good we do for others, when it is done with allour heart, there is nothing we cannot accomplish together. It was the Zeiler’s who inspiredthe title for this year’s report – “In Every Season, For All Time.”

On behalf of the courageous and gifted women we are privileged to serve, we thank you sovery much for your generous support this past year.

D O N O R P R O F I L E

AN ANNUAL REPORT IS, BY NATURE, A TIME-BOUND DOCUMENT. APLACE WHERE WE TAKE ACCOUNT AND EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDEFOR THE GIVING OF RESOURCES, TIME, AND TALENT DURING THEPAST YEAR.

WHETHER YOU ARE A READER OF ANCIENT WISDOM TEXTS OR A FANOF SIXTIES FOLK ROCK MUSIC, THESE WORDS WILL BE FAMILIAR TOYOU: “TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A TIME TO EVERYPURPOSE UNDER HEAVEN.”

GENEROUS DONORS CHARLIE AND SANDY ZEILER ARE MOSTASSUREDLY NOT TIME-BOUND IN THEIR LOVE FOR AND COMMITMENTTO CAROLINE CENTER. IN FACT, THEY HAVE BEEN WITH US, OURSTEADY COMPANIONS AND DEAR FRIENDS, SINCE THE BEGINNING.THEY KEEP US STRONG AND SURE IN EVERY SEASON. AND, FOR OUREVERY GOOD PURPOSE, THEY CREATE POSSIBILITIES THAT ALWAYSMAKE OUR TIMING LOOK IMPECCABLE. WHETHER IT’S A “TIME TOPLANT,” “A TIME TO BUILD UP,” OR “A TIME TO GATHER STONES TO-GETHER,” THE ZEILERS BRING TRUE WISDOM OF THE HEART TOTHEIR GIVING TO CAROLINE CENTER.

WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL ENJOY GETTING TO KNOW THE ZEILERS ALITTLE BETTER IN THIS BRIEF INTERVIEW AS THEY REFLECT ON WHATIT MEANS TO THEM TO GIVE AND, MAYBE EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY,WHAT IT MEANS TO THEM TO SIMPLY “BE THERE” FOR CAROLINE CEN-TER – IN EVERY SEASON AND FOR ALL TIME.

ZEILERIF IT’S OKAY WITH YOU, MAYBE WE CAN LOOK AT THISCONVERSATION AS ALSO NOT “TIME-BOUND.” SO, LET’SBEGIN WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN. YOUR RELA-TIONSHIP WITH CAROLINE CENTER IS SO LONGSTANDING,I KNOW THERE ARE STORIES YOU COULD SHARE.

Well, there certainly are stories. We were introduced to Caro-line Center a number of years ago by Sr. Pat Glinka throughher brother and our good friends, Ernie and Jackie Glinka. Weattended Caroline Center’s first “Green Foods and Bands” an-nual fundraiser, and we loved it! We ended up attending thisevent every year until it had run its course and was replacedby other activities and events. At Green Foods and Bands, Icaught up with a long-time friend of mine and fellow alumnafrom my Hopkins nursing days – Eileen Leahy – who wasworking at Caroline Center at the time in development andfundraising. As I talked more with Eileen, my interest in Car-oline Center really took root.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARNEDFROM EILEEN THAT SPARKED DEEPER INTEREST INCAROLINE CENTER FOR YOU?

I was very happy to hear about Caroline Center’s career train-ing program and the focus Caroline Center placed on helpingwomen find good jobs - jobs where they could make a livingwage. I worked as a nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in eastBaltimore for 32 years, so I saw, firsthand, the effects thatpoverty can have on the health and well-being of individuals, families, and even whole communities. An organization, likeCaroline Center, that was providing education and job train-ing to prepare women living in the community to be nursingassistants struck me immediately as just a great idea.

EDUCATING WOMEN TO BECOME CERTIFIED NURSINGASSISTANTS AND CERTIFIED GERIATRIC NURSING ASSISTANTSAT CAROLINE CENTER TURNS OUT TO HAVE BEEN A “GREATIDEA,” JUST AS YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. YOU ANDYOUR HUSBAND, CHARLIE, HOWEVER, MADE IT AN “AMAZ-ING IDEA” BY GENEROUSLY HELPING CAROLINE CENTERCREATE A REAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR TRAINEESTHAT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR LEARNING ANDCAREER SUCCESS. WOULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT?

Charlie knew how meaningful my nursing career was to me– how big a part of my life it was. So, when I retired from nurs-ing 10 years ago, he told me that he wanted to do somethingspecial that would honor my years of service and my devotionto the profession. When he learned about the need at CarolineCenter for an updated clinical skills lab that would help thewomen in the CNA/GNA program better prepare for their newcareers – and, he asked me how I felt about helping out witha gift to refurbish and update the skills lab – I was all for it!

More recently, last year at Caroline Center’s “Scrubs on a Mis-sion” fundraising event, in fact – when Charlie and I learnedthat additional skills lab improvements were needed at Car-oline Center, we were happy to help with those as well. Theskills lab and classroom space were all updated during thesummer months and everything was in place and ready to usefor the class coming in the fall 2016.

I guess you could say that we – Charlie and I – feel particu-larly responsible for keeping the clinical skills lab up-to-dateand in good condition . . . and, not just because our namesare on a plate outside the door! The skills lab is the placewhere the most essential training for anyone planning toenter the caring professions, such as healthcare, happens. So,having a great, working lab is critical. For nursing assistanttrainees, mastering basic skills provides positive reinforce-ment and contributes to confidence. When the skills are solid, there is a better chance that a trainee will enjoy her job be-cause she knows that she can do the job well.

On a side note, I wanted the skills lab to be a pleasant, well-lit environment that the women would enjoy using. Since Car-oline Center’s clinical skills lab is set up in a basement-likearea in the building, this was a little bit of a challenge – but,I think we accomplished it with better lighting, brightlypainted walls, carpeting, etcetera.

FROM GENEROUS GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND TO YOURCOMMITMENT TO CAROLINE CENTER’S PERMANENT EN-DOWMENT FUND, AND SO MANY MORE MEANINGFULGIFTS IN BETWEEN, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONEWHO MIGHT BE THINKING ABOUT MAKING A FIRST GIFTOR INCREASING A GIFT TO CAROLINE CENTER?

I think we both would say that anyone considering making acharitable contribution to Caroline Center will never regretthe decision. There is no downside. Gifts are used for worthypurposes that make such a huge difference for women whoare experiencing poverty. Giving to Caroline Center is not ahandout, it’s a hand-up. Caroline Center’s board and staff aretotally committed to using all donor gifts wisely, and they re-ally do make a difference.

LASTLY, ESPECIALLY IN TIMES OF CHANGE, WE ARE ALLCHALLENGED TO FIND NEW, MEANINGFUL WAYS OF HOLD-ING ON TO WHAT IS MEANINGFUL TO US AND NURTURINGWHAT WE LOVE, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE GROWINGOUT OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CAROLINE CENTER TOSHARE WITH READERS ABOUT HOW TO “BE THERE” FORTHE PEOPLE AND THE WORK THAT ARE CLOSEST TO ONE’SHEART?

“Being there” for Caroline Center for us has always been apleasure and very meaningful. After I retired, I served on theCaroline Center Board of Trustees for two terms, and duringthat time I got to know the dedicated Caroline Center staff. Ialso saw how effectively and responsibly Caroline Centerused its very limited resources to enhance and grow its pro-gram. And, the outcomes were impressive! There were goodjobs – meaningful work – for every graduate; and, many of thegraduates went on to further their education, get additionalprofessional certifications, and to get promotions at work. Per-sonally, and mostly, I’m for any effort that empowers women– Charlie agrees with me – for any effort that gives women theopportunity to join the workforce. This is work that is close tomy heart and work that we want to nurture.

Created by John I. Leahy to honor the memory of his wife, the Nancy B. Leahy Scholars Programallows Caroline Center to make its educational program available to women in most need and whowould most benefit from the opportunity through direct scholarship assistance. During her life,Nancy B. Leahy gave selflessly of her time, talents, and resources to the women of Caroline Center.Donors who support Caroline Center today through the scholars program help to continue Nancy B.Leahy’s legacy through their generous giving. Caroline Center is grateful to the donors who choseto support the scholars program this past year, and we are thankful to the Leahy family for their on-going support and vision, which enabled Caroline Center to establish its outstanding training pro-gram for certified pharmacy technicians (PT) and nationally certified pharmacy technicians (CPhT).

A generous gift from an individual donor made it possible for Caroline Center to establish an endowment fund in 2011. A vibrant endowment will help preserve the vitality of the Caroline Center educational program and will helpmake the excellent program available to hundreds of women each year whoare seeking to start new lives through careers with potential for advancement. If you would like to know more about making an endowment gift, pleasecontact Development Director Mitch Crook at [email protected].
