ZAKAT PURIFIES
ZAKAT
Can Zakat be rendered to charities? There is no religious inconvenience in rendering zakat to foundations, institutions or aid funds that collect zakat in a fund managed by trustworthy people for the benefit of purposes indicated in 60th verse of Surah Al-Tawbah.
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakat will have their reward with the Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:277)

What is Zakat? The religious meaning of zakat – purifi cation, clean-sing and prosperity – refers to giving up some of your pro-perty in the name of Allah to those entitled to receive zakat by religious teaching. Zakat is one of fi ve main pillars of Islam as one of the fi nancial worship-ping me-thods; the Quran prescribes establishing pray-er properly and giving zakat (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:43).
What does Nisab mean? Nisab is the minimum level of wealth determined by the Prophet Mohammed. Zakat is obligatory at 80.18 grams of gold or equivalent value in cash or commer-cial goods. There is no defi ned time to give zakat, which should be given from the time it becomes fa-ridah. Zakat may be given personally, or via power of attorney or transfer.
Zakat is paid in gold, silver, cash, agricultural products or livestock, meat, milk, and power from such, such as sheep, veal, camel and horse, and also real estate and commer-cial goods.
Every Muslim that has reached or passed puberty, and is independent, intelli-gent and owns property at a nisab amount is liable to give zakat.
Zakat is obligatory after one year for those whose assets amount to 80.18 grams of gold after deducting basic needs.
People owning goods at an amount of nisab should give 2.5% of their goods as zakat.
