The Centre for Sustainable Chemistry is a carbon-
neutral chemistry laboratory located on the University
of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. The timber-framed
structure offers state-of-the-art teaching and research
laboratories.
Imtech carried out design, installation and
commissioning of the full mechanical and electrical
services package. The project was partly funded by
GlaxoSmithKline and at the centre of the building
is the Climate Neutral Laboratory (CNL). Working
in collaboration with the main contractor, Imtech
delivered innovative solutions, as the CNL is naturally
ventilated by wind power.
Scientific InnovationFollowing a design review, Imtech’s team identified
areas where the ventilation systems could be improved
and specifications modified to maximise efficiency.
CFD modelling was utilised to prove the system’s
effectiveness and performance prior to installation.
Carbon Neutral A key requirement of the project was that the building
needed to achieve carbon neutral status within 25 years
of operation. Equipment and systems were selected
and designed taking minimum embodied carbon and
maximum efficiency into account. Each component was
verified using a carbon calculator.
Award WinningSince completion the Centre for Sustainable Chemistry
has won many awards including architectural and
design accolades. We are very proud to have been
recognised by our industry, winning the Construction
News Specialist Awards – Project of the Year for our
work on this prestigious project.

The University of Hertfordshire’s new £50m science
building is located on the College Lane Campus
in Hatfield. This landmark building provides the
University with state-of-the-art facilities including
laboratories and research technology. This forms part
of the Universities 2020 Estates Vision, a pioneering
programme that brings vital additions and dramatic
transformations to the Campus.
Programme CompletionImtech undertook the mechanical and electrical
installation to this new building. Working closely with
the main contractor, the MEP designer and the client,
the team ensured that the mechanical and electrical
services were procured, installed and completed on
time and to budget, meeting the scheduled build
programme.
Proactive SolutionsFollowing late completion of the building design,
Imtech were appointed to the project with a six week
lead-in to site operations. The team engaged proactive
solutions such as adapting pre-construction activities
to work in line with the on-going construction
programme.
Also, our experienced engineers were able to ensure
quotations were received and the development and
submission of technical proposals and approvals were
all completed within the set timescale.

Collaborative Teaching Laboratory
The University of Birmingham’s new £40m Collaborative
Teaching Laboratory (CTL), will bring together
practical teaching activities across a broad range of
science and engineering disciplines. The project has
now commenced and is scheduled to be complete by
summer 2018. The three-storey 72,120 sq. ft. building
will take the shape of a robust brick structure, with
variation in materials and form to represent three
different internal environments of the laboratories.
Rethinking TeachingImtech are delivering the full mechanical and electrical
design and build solution, including specialist systems
such as variable volume fume extract and specialist
gases, to this state-of-the-art facility. When complete
it will enable the University to rethink the way STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
subjects are taught and will also enable enhanced
collaborative and interdisciplinary training and
engagement.
Efficient DesignThe building design has been awarded the BREEAM
Excellent standard and an EPC A Rating for efficiency.

Royal Birmingham Conservatoire
The new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire is a state-of-
the-art music and teaching venue consisting of 9500m2
of teaching spaces, performance venues, workshops
and recording studios. Imtech delivered the full
mechanical and electrical services to the building.
Maximising Prefabrication
In the early stages of this project, Imtech’s team
worked closely with Galliford Try to develop the fully
integrated programme and review the buildability
strategy. This included maximising the opportunities
for off-site manufacture, along with ensuring the
construction programme was adapted to accommodate
the pre-fabricated packages.
Acoustic Challenges
The nature of the building also presented some
challenging design requirements in terms of the
humidity levels and acoustic requirements. To ensure
that the design of the ventilation systems achieved
the critical temperature and humidity levels required,
Imtech undertook a full dynamic thermal model of
every room.
The team also had to consider the acoustic
performance of the building and the services installed.
The noise criteria in a number of areas was as low as
PNC15, which required extreme care and consideration
in the design and construction of the MEP services. This
included ultra-low velocities in the ductwork systems as
well as triple attenuator arrangements.
Technical Facilities Management Following the successful delivery of this project, Imtech
Inviron have secured the technical services maintenance
contract at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Guildhall School of Music & DramaContractor: Sir Robert McAlpine | Value: £11.3m
The internationally renowned Guildhall School of Music
& Drama occupies an eight storey annexe of the Milton
Court development in the City of London’s Barbican
Centre. The annexe provides the students with state-
of-the-art performance venues, rehearsal rooms and
teaching accommodation.
Audiences can enjoy the 608 seat concert hall, 223 seat
theatre and studio theatre as well as spacious, light-
filled foyers and public spaces.
Imtech installed various technical services, including
heating, ventilation and air conditioning, high
specification performance lighting and fully-adjustable
acoustics to suit each type of performance.
Exacting Standards During the early stages of the project our team
recognised that its successful delivery would be
achieved by all parties working together to contribute
their experience and knowledge. This collaborative
approach ensured the entire project team were able to
effectively overcome challenging spatial constraints and
meet the exacting standards necessary for this high-
tech installation project.
Zero DefectsImtech successfully delivered a challenging project.
Milton Court reached the end of the two year defects
period with zero engineering issues, and a satisfied
client and end user.

University of Lincoln
The University of Lincoln’s award-winning campus
provides a modern, student-centred environment.
The university has rapidly moved up in the university
rankings, having risen 60 places in four years. In 2017,
it ranked amongst the top 10 English universities.
The Challenge
The estate size has grown significantly from 67
buildings to 77 buildings in 2017. We undertake all
mechanical and electrical work across six campuses
including student accommodation, lecture halls,
specialist training centres, offices, entertainment
venues and sports facilities.
Since its’ appointment as technical hard services
provider, Imtech Inviron, has worked in partnership
with the university team and the soft services provider.
Approach
We jointly implemented a framework to encourage
and monitor the success of the collaboration between
all facilities management teams. In addition to daily
dialogue, workshops are held once a year, this gives us
all the opportunity to assess and review performance
along with ensuring we are aware of any changes to
the environment and requirements of the university
and its students.
Result Having worked in partnership alongside the university
facilities team since 2009, we have become an integral
part of the university expansion project and helped
make the transition of the campus to its current size
and capacity run smoothly.
Innovation
The contract is constantly reviewed and we implement
a business focused strategy to maximise efficiency and
reduce cost of planned preventative maintenance.
