NEVER HAS THERE BEEN A BETTER REASON TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY
Albert Einstein
Best in energy performanceNever has there been a better reason to do things differently. As Einstein so clearly stated, the world will not evolve past its
current state of crisis by using the same thinking that created the situation. Addressing climate change is the innovation
challenge of the century and we at Imtech are proud to be at the heart of the drive towards a low carbon economy.
With a reputation as a European technical services giant and with many years of experience across the energy, environmental,
water and traffic sectors. Imtech can address these challenges with highly integrated technical solutions that are provided on
the basis of guaranteed outputs whether that is energy efficiency savings, low carbon or renewable heat, cooling and power.
Underpinning these guarantees are the capabilities we have built across our business that enable us to deliver everything from;
identifying the applicable low carbon measures, evaluating their cost and carbon performance, developing the scenario for
phased deployment, identifying investment structures and associated returns, understanding and communicating the wider
effects on the local community/stakeholders, technical deployment including integration of plant, project management,
engineering and maintenance, and full life cycle support including measurement and verification. Whilst these services can be
performed individually, the greatest benefits are gained when they are combined to provide an integrated ultra-low carbon
technical asset management service.
“The biggest challenge society faces is climate change. As responsible engineers and technical
innovators, Imtech are able to provide the expertise necessary to deliver sustainable energy projects
that not only offer economic benefits to our clients but provide solutions for communities and the
wider environment as a whole”

EngineeringServices
Our approach to Energy Services is based on an integrated model that creates solutions to meet the needs of today whilst
reducing the demand on the natural environment for tomorrow. It is this approach which saw us win an award for the
‘’Best energy service project’’ at the European Energy Service Awards.
This approach is underpinned by our Triple Pillars of Energy Services:
1. Green Buildings
Just like any other resource fundamental to modern society, energy should be used as efficiently as possible. Buildings
consume 42% of all electricity, more than any other physical asset and property costs are typically the second largest cost
for many businesses with economic pressures requiring better performance for the same or less resource.
Our Green building process follows a number of logical steps to ensure your building is running as efficiently as possible
and we will guarantee the results transferring the risk from you to us providing peace of mind that you do not have to bear
the risk for the performance of the contract.
We will perform an in-depth analysis of the property, develop a number of energy efficient solutions, install the required
elements. We then monitor these savings via our measurement and verification plan to ensure the energy savings are
being met or exceeded. The savings in energy costs will be used to pay back the capital investment of the project or can
be reinvested into the building to allow for further capital upgrades that may otherwise be unfeasible. The Green Building
approach combines Imtech’s exceptional building and technical expertise and the building efficiency improvements can
be provided with no up-front capital expenditure via our non-recourse asset investment solution. This comprehensive and
detailed approach enables the latest technologies to be installed to increase plant efficiency and improve building
performance and ultimate value.

2. Decentralised Energy
The UK’s centralised model of production and transmission wastes an astonishing two-thirds of primary energy inputs as
illustrated below, requiring us to burn far more fuel and emit far more carbon dioxide than necessary. But there is an
alternative where electricity is generated close to or at the point of use avoiding the losses in transport and driving
efficiency by utilising the heat generated in the process through technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP)
systems. In a Decentralised Energy system, buildings, instead of being passive consumers of energy, become power stations,
constituent parts of local community energy networks.

Imtech Approach
• Analyse the power, heating and cooling load requirements of the building/s
• Assess the local grid connection availability
• Survey the area for potential of local and district heat network distribution
• Prepare an outline technical and/or financial model including local planning requirements
• Agree best model and commercial structure to progress with
• Carry out full design to clients performance requirements
• Provide full Design & Build Services under an acceptable EPC contract
• Provide full Operation & Maintenance Services over agreed term
Imtech offer all the services necessary to establish optimised Decentralised Energy systems from planning, design and
procurement to implementation and operation.

3. Green Power
Generating renewable electricity from natural resources such as the wind, sun or earth as well as utilising waste products
to produce heat and power or convert into biogas or valuable biofertilisers are all forms of Imtech’s Green Power solutions.
As an engineering and infrastructure provider with 20+ years experience within the UK’s utilities sector none of these
technologies or applications are new to Imtech. However the purpose and drive are different and the types of contracting
vehicles and structures are rapidly evolving to ensure the increasing carbon legislations are being met whilst the opposing
tariff incentives are maximised. Imtech are fully conversant in these requirements and offer all the services necessary to take
a project from idea stage to an operational asset including assistance in the funding strategies and legal structures as well
as the technical models.
We have already helped a number of leading water companies to produce more power than they require to treat their
wastewater, through Advanced Digestion. They even export the surplus back to the grid. Integrated solutions are vital to
ensure that we can optimise energy effi ciency and sustainable power generation to achieve power and energy
self-suffi ciency. Below is an example illustration for a energy from waste/biogas project, completed for Welsh Water in
Cardiff.

Free Power for Schools
Imtech provided the design, supply and installation of solar PV installations to
approximately 85 schools across the UK with a total output of 1.7MW under
the ‘Free Power for Schools’ scheme. This was originally a signifi cantly larger
framework utilising the 7 initial FIT rates but was subsequently scaled back due
to changes to the tariffs. This scheme was externally funded utilising a mix of
debt and equity including institutional funds.

Green Power - Case Studies
Poplars Food waste AD Plant
The project included turnkey design, construction and commissioning of the
AD plant. The Biffa Poplars AD facility will treat an estimated two million
tonnes of source segregated food waste over its lifetime that would otherwise
be disposed of via landfi ll. The received waste is generated from supermarket,
restaurant and kitchen waste, oils from fast food outlets and other
biodegradable product sources. The facility will export approximately 6MW
of electricity to the National Grid as renewable energy – enough power for
around 5000 homes.
AMP5 Sludge Strategy Cardiff / Afan STC’s
The projects included turnkey design, construction, commissioning and
optimization(SOOP) of a complete advanced digestion plant including
enhanced thermal hydrolysis, anaerobic digestion, and CHP. The sludge
strategy consisted of treating 80,000 tonnes across four sites with improved
performance helping to reduce carbon footprint by 35,000tonnes CO2 per
year and generate 40MWh/day.
Boggeragh Wind Farm
This project involves the construction of 3 bay 110kV substations connecting
the 19 wind turbines on Ireland's largest wind farm. The 19 wind turbines
from the Boggeragh Wind Farm generate 57 MW in sustainable energy,
enough to provide energy for 30,000 homes. Imtech provided the project
management and balance of plant for the wind farm.

Technology that improves society
Imtech’s vision is of a decentralised and democratic energy network.
Bringing energy generation into the local community means consumers
will have a closer and more intelligent relationship with it. When
people understand where energy comes from and have a sense of
ownership of it, they will value it more and use it less. Energy that’s
local and low carbon is energy that is secured for future generations.
