There are four language competencies; listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Writing is one of the important ability in English subject. It is one of the difficult ability to be

mastered, too. Unfortunately, some English students of SMA 1 Kudus thought that writing

English was difficult, because they have to know about grammar and the structure. Some of

them have been good. Based on the fact, the writer wants to solve the problem faced by the

teacher and the students in the class X by proposing an alternative media in teaching English

through Kudus culture, that is Kretek Museum because Kudus is very well known as Kretek

City.

The purpose of this research is to find out whether Kudus culture can improve the

students’ writing ability of descriptive text in X Science 4 of SMA 1 Kudus in the academic

year 2015/2016 and to describe the students’ response on the teaching and learning process

through Kudus culture which is aimed to improve their writing ability.

This reseach is a collaborative Action Research. The research is done in two

cycles. The subject of this research was the studnets of X Science 4 of SMA 1 Kudus in the

academic year 2015/2016 with the total of the students is 36. This research uses three

instruments to collect the data; they were observation sheet, interview, and the test.

The result of this research shows that in cycle I, the average score of the students’

writing ability is 75.69 and in cycle II, the average score is 89.9. Besides, the response of the

students was better in every cycle. While the students’s response is very good since it is

seldom for them to study outside of the class, but some of them suggested to visit other

interesting places such as mal and cinema.

Based on the result of the research above, the writer concludes that through

Kudus culture, the students’ writing ability in X Science 4 of SMA 1 Kudus in the academic

year 2015/2016 can be improved. The writer also suggests the English teacher and the other

researchers to use Kudus culture as a media to improve the students’ writing ability especially

in writing descriptive text.

Ada empat kompetensi bahasa; mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis.

Menulis adalah salah satu kemampuan penting dalam Bahasa Inggris. Ini adalah salah satu

kemampuan yang sulit dikuasai. Sayangnya, beberapa siswa dari SMA 1 Kudus berpikir

bahwa menulis bahasa Inggris sulit karena mereka harus tahu tentang tata basa dan struktur.

Namun, beberapa dari mereka sudah memiliki kemampuan menulis yang baik. Berdasarkan

fakta, penulis ingin memecahkan masalah yang dihadapi oleh guru dan siswa di kelas X

dengan mengusulkan media alternatif dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris melalui Kebudayaan

Kudus, yaitu Museum Kretek karena Kudus dikenal sebagai kota Kretek.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah Kebudayaan Kudus

mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa X MIA 4 dari SMA 1 Kudus pada tahun akademik

2015/2016 menulis teks deskriptif dan untuk menggambarkan respon siswa pada proses

pengajaran dan pembelajaran melalui Kebudayaan Kudus yang bertujuan untuk

menungkatkan kemampuan menulis mereka.

Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas Kolaboratif. Penelitian ini

dilakukan dalam dua siklus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa X MIA 4 dari SMA 1 Kudus

pada tahun akademik 2015/2016 dengan total siswa adalah 36. Penelitian ini menggunakan

tiga instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data; yaitu lembar observasi, wawancara, dan tes.

Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada siklus I, nilai rata-rata kemampuan

menulis siswa adalah 75.69 dan pada siklus II, nilai rata-rata adalah 89.9. Selain itu, respon

siswa lebih baik dalam setiap siklus. Sementara respon siswa sangat baik karena jarang bagi

mereka untuk belajar di luar kelas, tetapi beberapa dari mereka menyarankan untuk

mengunjungi tempat-tempat menarik lainnya seperti mal dan bioskop.

Berdasarkan hasil penelitian di atas, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa melalui

Kebudayaan Kudus, kemampuan menulis siwa di X MIA 4 dari SMA 1 Kudus pada Bahas

inggris dan peneliti lain untuk menggunakan Kebudayaan Kudus sebagai media untuk

meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa terutama dalam menulis teks deskriptif.
