Older Peoples Needs

• South Tyneside has a population of 148,200, with 27, 246 over 65’s and 3,600 over 85’s living in South Tyneside in 2001

• Over 65’s population in South Tyneside has increased from 17.8% to 18.2% population in 2011

• Estimated 32,300 over 65’s living in South Tyneside by 2021. Higher proportion of older people than other areas across UK

• 11.3% unpaid carers living in South Tyneside – many carers experience poor emotional and physical health

• 24% population reported having limiting long-term illness compared to 18% across UK

• Increase in number of older people diagnosed with dementia to 1100 people• Rate of emergency hospital admissions has risen during last two years and is

higher than national average• Increase in isolation leading to malnutrition and health problems• Higher proportion of people suffering from respiratory illness, stroke, diabetes and

chronic kidney disease. •

Older People’s Needs

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) 2011 recommendations:

• Tackle social isolation amongst older people by providing social and educational opportunities is priority

• Identifying older people at risk of social isolation to reduce risks through volunteering and community mentoring

• Provide sufficient and appropriate opportunities for older people to begin and maintain physical activity

• Falls prevention promotion to identified those at risk of falling

• Improved support for carers including emergency breaks, advocacy and flexible long term support.

• Supported an average of 10,000 older people in South Tyneside to improve later life every year

• Supported 6583 people with information and advice last year

• Assisted older people to claim over £1 million in benefits and income to alleviate poverty and provide vital support last year

• Supported 5758 older people with preventative services including Falls Prevention, Home from Hospital, Home Support and End of Life Care.

• Educated 1092 individuals about the benefits of modern technology and going online

• Delivered health related activities to 8,255 older people

• Over 17,400 older people attended our events including South Tyneside’s Older People’s Festival

• Assisted 145 volunteers to deliver services in the community
