SIMSR ALCOM team was in full gear during the last 6 weeks. They have worked hard and created SIMSR Chapters across the country in 7 cities which were, Bombay, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Pune.

The Alumni Team has started a new initiative called the Alumni Outreach program, where our first year students will be establishing contact with any Alumnus working in the Organisation where they will be completing their summer projects. Request your co-operation in meeting and spending some time with them, so as to help us gather more pertinent information and also enabling us to share our activities with you.

We also have had our Alumni participating in the GDPI process across the country. This is what they have to say.

ALUMNI INITIATIVES

Rajiv Saraiya - Delhi

“Firstly, it was the happiness one gets, when you get a chance to reunite with your roots,

- Having gone through the experience and grind of management studies, and thereafter having applied it in real life for over a decade and a half, you do have a fair idea of what is needed for one to successfully complete the studies and emerge as a worthwhile professional. It is this learning that you apply, and try to pick the right candidates, and make it win-win for the candidates and the organization

- Satisfaction, in terms of being able to guide the candidates at times,

- And the fun factor, of reliving the college moments, during the process. This is how I would describe my experience for the day. Of course, the evening was fun too, having got an opportunity to meet almost 40+ alumni over dinner.”

Arun rao – Mumbai and Bangalore

"It was indeed a pleasure to reconnect with the institute and interact with the faculty members. With regards to the admissions of the prospective candidates, I was amazed to see that the candidates were of a very high caliber which augurs well for the institute and it was a thrilling experience talking to them."

Piyush Arya - Delhi

“I think this is the first time you have included corporates in the admission process. I believe this brings different mindset in selecting right candidates.

We, corporates, will always interview candidates based on their employability and this would help SIMSR to select candidates who can be placed comfortably during placements.

I feel that the entire event was managed professionally and I would reiterate that my faculties are best.”

ALUMNI INITIATIVES

Mohd. Nadim – CCU

“It was an absolute pleasure representing the SIMSR admissions panel this year. The day started on a nostalgic note with a video showcasing SIMSR. Being part of the panel was a learning-cum-enriching experience for me. During the 2-day process, I came across a diverse range of prospective candidates and while interacting with them I could feel that I was down that same road before. It was like "re-inventing the wheel all over again". However, I truly enjoyed continuing to represent SIMSR but in a different capacity as an alumna. Interacting with students trying to make a choice about the college reminded me of where I started and why I chose SIMSR. It also gave me the opportunity to share the amazing experience I had in my two years. I can think of no better way to thank SIMSR for all it has given me than to pay it forward.”

Viju Shankar – Delhi “It was a very good experience & I enjoyed it very much. Recruitment is part of our KPI's as we need to recruit team members for various roles in our organisation and while interviewing we were making sure that he is capable enough for handling pressures in his job as well. Secondly being an alumni it's our duty that we are selecting the right candidate which will raise the bar of SIMSR in the coming years Please continue this activity in the coming years and try to involve more and more alumni who are ready to spend few hours for his institute as well” Rajeev Agarwal – Delhi It was nice to meet SIMSR faculty at Delhi and the welcome was very warm. The entire admission process was well managed and immaculately orchestrated

A world as dynamic as ours often makes us ponder over how things may change

in the wink of an eye. And we

eventually realize the only thing that is

constant is change. SIMSR has always been on the forefront when it comes to

preparing its future managers aware of

such changes

happening around the

world at every

instant .Thus

the Marketing department

of the

institute,

strives to give every

opportunity to

the students to enhance their marketing

acumen and keep them up to date with

the latest happenings shaping up the future of the business world .The 2nd

Marketing Round Table Conference at

SIMSR was held on 13th March 2014 in

MARKETING 2020 New Horizon New Challenges

similar lines of thought where the topic

of discussion was “Marketing in the year

2020- New horizons, New Challenges”. The main attraction of this year’s Round

Table Conference was the keynote

speaker Ms. Vinita Bali (former MD –

Britannia Industries) who is known to be one of the first

few women to

have worked

for consumer goods

companies like

Britannia in

Indian history. SIMSR was

honoured to

have on

campus such an eminent personality in the Indian Business circles. A

transformational leader, Ms. Bali has

won several awards and accolades for

her business acumen and leadership. In

2009 she was named The Business

Woman of the Year by The Economic Times and ranked 18th among the

world's top 50 business women by The

Financial Times. An opportunity to

interact with a personality who has achieved such great heights in the area

of Marketing is a chance of a lifetime

and the students of SIMSR surely did

make the most of it. This was overwhelmingly evident from the

turnout that we had in our Red

Auditorium. It was full to the brim with

students even occupying the stairs.

The event started with an introductory speech by our Director, Prof Dr. Satish

Ailawadi, followed by the introduction

of the dignitaries for the day, Ms. Vinita

Bali and Mr. Samir Somaiya by Prof. Dr Monica Khanna. The topic of the

conference was introduced by Prof.

Isaac Jacob who through his

presentation took us through the advances that can be expected in the

fields of marketing from a consumer’s

perspective in the coming years.

Post the introduction, Ms. Vinita Bali began her presentation which was

mainly focussed on making us

understand what a “Brand” is and how

the top brands have achieved success over the years. The presentation began

with Ms. Bali stressing on the

importance of having an opinion on

every little thing and how it can make a difference if appropriate insights are

garnered and leveraged upon in the

field of Marketing.

The Event concluded with a Q&A session

where students asked various questions to Ms. Bali who responded to them with

poise and clarity. The replies were crisp

and to the point, yet very

comprehensive. Therefore we believe the 2nd Marketing Round Table

conference has definitely helped in

molding the thoughts of most of the

aspiring marketers among us.

“MANASVINI” Celebration of Womanhood

Women's Development Cell (SIMSR), in association with Somaiya Vidyavihar,

commemorated International Women’s

Day, on the 8th of March, in a grand

week long celebration, called “Manasvini”, which comprised of a

series of activities and competitions

from 4th March ’14 to 9th March ’14.

Team Imprints brings to you a quick peek at the series of events.

The celebrations kicked off with the

unveiling of the Celebrate Womanhood Wall where students, faculty and all the

visitors wrote inspiring, heartfelt messages about the difference women

make in their lives.

The following day started off with the

online quiz contest “Jigyasa” wherein participants were brainstormed through

2 rigorous rounds themed on

“Prominent Women Personalities of the World”. The event, won by Mayank Asthana and Satyajit Gahana of SIMSR,

ended with a healthy and fun filled knowledge sharing session about the

outstanding achievements that women

have attained throughout history.

On the 6th of March, a plantation drive called “Green Patch of Fame” was

organized in the college campus as a

unique initiative to give back to Mother

Earth. The event saw students, faculty members and admin staff turning up in

large numbers to plant saplings and

name them after woman achievers of

their choice like Kalpana Chawla, Helen

Keller and many more. Next, it was time for the oratory contest

Vaani, themed on Different Shades of Womanhood". The contest received

enthusiastic participation from both men and women, who mesmerised the

audience and judge Dr. Pushpinder

Gupta Bhatia,(Associate Prof.

Physics, Guru Nanak College of Arts, Science and Commerce,) with their

thought provoking speech and poetry.

As a part of Manasvini, an art contest

Naaz, was organized by the WDC

committee where artworks like

charcoal painting, watercolour portraits and paper filigree made by the

participants were displayed in 3

different categories, namely

Drawing/Painting, Photography and Unique Art Forms.

Ada, the Talent Hunt encouraged

participants to showcase their flair in

Dance, Music or Drama. The lush voices, the graceful moves and monologues

portraying the myriad moods of a

woman held the audience captive in a

journey of beauty, elegance and power. Saturday, 8th March, or International

Women’s Day, was dedicated to a much

needed cause for Indian women –

Cervical Cancer Awareness. Joining

behind this cause, more than 30 walkers

converged on the morning of

International Women’s Day to take a step as a part of the walk-a-thon,

towards greater awareness of and lesser

deaths from this deadly disease.

On the last day of the celebrations, an exclusive-to-women trek to Karnala

Fort, Panvel was organized by WDC,

SIMSR to encourage more women to

engage in such healthy activities. This event marked the end of the Women’s

Week Celebrations at Somaiya

Vidyavihar with a pledge by all to work

in unity towards women’s empowerment and for a better future.

GUEST INTERACTION Dr. Aman Trehan, Gm Global IP and Strategy,

Wockhardt

Be it the Indian Pharmaceutical industry

or worldwide, the importance of Intellectual property is not hidden from

any. Dr. Aman Trehan, GM Global IP and

Strategy, Wockhardt, had an interaction

on the same, with the students organized by IBS@SISMR. The students

benefitted from his rich industry

experience and learned about the

importance of implementing IP strategy in line with a company’s corporate

strategy for gaining an edge over the

competitors.

He also talked in detail about several patent strategies in practice. Some of

these included- product patents, second generation patents, process patents, product by process patents, utility patents, formulation patents and patent term extensions. As future Managers and Strategists gained an exposure to the IP practices of a company, they inquisitively raised questions that were addressed by Dr. Trehan with poise and clarity. A few live industry cases were also discussed during the interaction. The session was very insightful for the students and raised their interest for further research in the area.

CLICK A STORY Mirror continues to give me hope:

Objects are closer than they appear!

“Similar were the thoughts in our mind when we toyed with the idea of expressing our feelings about poverty, unemployment, women harassment and other social evils. But soon enough we realized that such deep thoughts can not be easily carved out in words. We need special presentation interface to express them. And Photography came to our rescue” a Social cell representative told Team Imprints in the event of Click a Story competition. The Social Cell organized this special photography competition for all management and MCA students from 24 march to 31 march keeping Somaiya Social Cell - Facebook as the platform to share the photographs. The event saw a massive response and the amount of depth in the photographs was highly intriguing. Entries ranged from themes like hope, animal love, women empowerment, poverty to education. All the winners were given special prizes and certificates while all the participants were awarded with a honor certificate. We take this opportunity to bring to you a quick glance at the event and the winning photographs that would definitely leave you with an inspiration to continue working towards the betterment of the society.

#SECOND PRIZE: CHAYANIKA MALIK The role of a woman transcends much beyond the role of a housemaker. Today's woman is strong, confident, informed and has a mind of her own and shoulders responsibilities along with men to make this world a better place to live.

E WEEK Celebrating entrepreneurship can implant

the idea of innovation in many a mind.

entrepreneurship. E-Week banners were

made to literally roam around the campus with the help of Y-Chakra, an initiative by

CI-YII. From the creative writing to the

analytical and cognitive skill of students’

minds were brought to test. Where the Entrepreneur Café was won over by Anish

Bengeri of PGDM(IB) 13-15 with his flare in

writing, The Apprentice tested the ability to

bring a business idea to life with the Novice

Challengers taking the prize away with her yummy baking skills and a whooping profit

of 6000 bucks . Ennovate, a case study

competition conducted on campus was

won by team Netrutva and the ADVIK,

F INeix’2014

It is often said that anyone who thinks there is safety only in numbers, probably hasn’t looked at the pages of a book on stock market. And it is this uncertainty and impermanence that makes the journey of every stock market exciting for most of us. However, it is the responsibility of the market to ensure that it functions in the best interest of the maximum number of its stakeholders. On March 22nd, 2014, Finstreet at SIMSR in association with National Security Depository Limited ( NSDL) hosted a first of its kind panel discussion for the future Wall Street aspirants of SIMSR ,where dignitaries from the industry put forward their views on the topic "Is the cautious approach justified for the Indian Financial Market"? The session was moderated by Mr. Ajay Marwah (EVP & Head- Trading, HDFC Bank) and the panellists who graced the dais included Mr. Mukund Santhanam

(Director, Deutsche Bank), our very own alumni Mr. Sanjay Shah (MD, Morgan Stanley) and Mr. Samar Banwat (SVP, NSDL). The event next in line was FINeix’ 2014- the annual inter-collegiate mutual funds portfolio design competition which had been organized to give recognition to ‘Nothing but the Best of Financial Engineering’ .The competition saw participation from 100+ teams across B-schools of India. It was conducted in three rounds namely- Elimination Quiz (online round 1), Online-Entry submission followed by a Campus Round in the end. The Finale was judged by Mr. Vinay Paharia (Religare Invesco Mutual Funds). It witnessed teams from NMIMS Mumbai, IIM Shillong and K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research compete for cash prizes and they have truly set the bar high for FINeix 2015.

A small step yet big in nature:

Yi-Chakra “Hope is a waking dream.” Well said by Aristotle. Young Indians Committee at SIMSR which is an integral part of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) brought in 15 branded bicycles in the beginning of this year, continuing with its dream of converting SIMSR into an eco-friendly campus and to pass on the message to all the students that in order to be fit and healthy in this sedentary lifestyle, they must opt for regular cycling.

With great help from our Director Sir Mr. Satish Ailawadi and faculty head Mrs. Reena Mehta, the committee undertook an initiative ‘Yi- Chakra’ of

bringing bicycles for K.J Somaiya Management & Engineering students inside the campus so that a student doesn’t have to wait for autos or taxis outside the hostel premises, can go easy on pocket and also get fit faster than a gym. The initiative was also taken with another motive of keeping the campus cleaner and greener.

The initiative was highly appreciated by students as well as the faculties. In order to encourage the students to ride cycle, various initiatives have been taken up by Yi-Chakra team in the last few months. Some of the prominent ones are:

1) Cycle Rally: A cycle rally was organized from Chembur to Thane in collaboration with

Chembur Cycle Club where in 11 students from

SIMSR took part. They rallied for 40kms. A BSA

sponsored tee was gifted to all the cyclists. 2) Tour de SIMSR: A Competition was organized

for those who like to spend more time on their

bicycle. Cycling hours were recorded every

week (starting from Monday and ending on Saturday) and the person who spent

maximum number of hours on a bicycle in a

particular week was judged as the WINNER

of the week and awarded the title of 'Tour de SIMSR’. Exciting prizes were given to the

winner each week. The competition

continued for two weeks.

3) Slow Cycle Race: With over 100 registrations

for the event and faculties also being a part

of the event, the slow cycle race was a huge success at SIMSR. The participants were

required to reach the finishing line without

stepping down and being the slowest.

Various exciting prizes were given to the winners by our Faculty head Mrs. Reena

Mehta. 4) Recently Yi-Chakra featured in a leading

Maharashtra newspaper ‘Mumbai Times’

edition, dated March 11, 2014.
