SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH COMMITTEE – CWO

COMMISSIE WETENSCHAPPELIJK ONDERZOEK – CWO

MISSION

The faculty wants to be a national and international player in the field of

scientific research.

Through its departments and research groups the faculty wants to

contribute to the scientific exploration and further development of its

academic disciplines. Therefore, the faculty sets the necessary conditions

and strives to disclose the results of its research to third parties and to

integrate them into its own teaching, research and service.

WHAT IS RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT?

“(...) The compilation of many small practices

that make your data easier to understand, less likely to

be lost, and more likely to be useable

during a project or ten years later.” (Briney 2015)

DATA IN HUMANITIES RESEARCH

“Data (…) refers to entities used as evidence of

phenomena for the purpose of research or scholarship.”

(Borgman, 2015)

RESEARCH DATATYPES

Content type Textual, numerical, multimedia…

Data format/objectSpreadsheets/tabular data, notes, databases, marked

up text, images, audiovisual recordings…

Mode of data collection Experimental, observational, derived/compiled data…

Primary vs secondaryOriginal data created in context of research project vs.

reuse of existing data

Digital vs non-digital Digital-born/digitised vs analogue data

Level of processing Raw, processed, analysed data

DMP - DATA MANAGEMENT PLAN

A formal document specifying how data will be handled

during and after a project

a 'living' document

increasingly required by research funders/institutions

https://researchtips.ugent.be/en/

good practice even if not required!

DMP - WHY PLAN?

Planning takes time upfront, but…

saves a lot of time and problems later on

helps you consider a range of RDM issues involved

makes expectations, tasks and procedures explicit

leads to more informed decisions about data

INTERDISCIPLINARY PANEL

interdisciplinarity = progress can be made in each of the disciplines

involved by the execution of the joint project, in each of the disciplines

projects where one of the disciplines plays an instrumental role (e.g.

supply tools to support the other discipline) are not eligible

TIPS – PROPOSAL WRITING

91

TIPS (1/4)

92

start in time: good applications go through a maturation process

take care of your methodology

explain the rationale from a wider scientific context

be aware of your audience / evaluators

motivate your choices (especially when departing from more classical

approaches): which cases, what methods, what theories and why

add examples: choose them carefully and double-check them

TIPS (2/4)

93

work plan: be precise

what do you do when?

how are the different steps or phases related?

which conferences / symposia / articles are you planning?

what is the relationship with your project?

feasibility: the project should be sufficiently specific and the evaluators

must be convinced that the project is feasible

TIPS (3/4)

94

carefully check the references you provide

avoid gaps in your story. If any, acknowledge them and try to refer to

expertise in your research group

a co-promoter may be useful (cf. filling gaps), but only if there is added

value. Explain why you choose a particular co-promoter

FWO “personal statement”: show your motivation, add the important

things not asked elsewhere in the form

TIPS (4/4)

95

keywords: be sufficiently specific (e.g. not 'humanities’)

update your pages on the Faculty Research Portal: research.flw.ugent.be.

They may be checked by the evaluators

make use of Biblio: biblio.ugent.be and for FWO applications export from

Biblio to the FWO e-loket
