Lot: 250Alfred WALLIS (1855-1942) Mixed media / house paint onheavy card 'Three Sailing Vessels on a River' Inscribed toverso in pencil 'For Stevan and Gwinneth, their marriage 1937, from Jim Ede. Painting by Alfred Wallis' Signed Framed andglazed in original frame 7" x 11.75" (17.8cm x 29.8cm) Noteson the painting by Robert Jones author of 'Alfred Wallis Artist &Mariner' published 2001 & 2006 by Halsgrove In his seagoingdays Alfred Wallis would have visited Falmouth and in his laterlife painted his memories of the area. As well as a paintingentitled 'A River Fal' and pictures of tug-boats typical ofFalmouth, there are paintings which are obvious descriptions ofthe landscape of that area. Wallis painted his memory of a shipcalled Nestor. With the help of the National Maritime MuseumCornwall, it was discovered that a large German ship carryingrice from Rangoon to London called for orders at Falmouth. That ship was the largest to have visited Falmouth during thatperiod and would have been an impressive sight to Wallis, sothe painting could date Wallis's presence in Falmouth to thevisit of the ship Nestor in 1882/1883. The painting 'ThreeSailing Vessels on a River' depicts three gaff-rigged sailingvessels. Although similar in rig to Falmouth working boats, which can still be seen to the present day, the vessels depicted

are much larger. They have ratlines, rope-ladders going up themasts which allow crew members to climb to make sailadjustments. These vessels were used to carry cargo from thelarger ships that came into Falmouth, to the upper reaches ofthe Fal, Truro rivers, and the Helford, etc. The painting showswooded areas on the river bank, and also a small quay, perhaps somewhere like Mylor, Point, Devoran or RoundwoodQuay. The fact that Wallis also painted pictures of similarvessels showing trees in blossom, the sort of thing that can beseen at Coombe or Kea where there are apple and plumorchards, shows that he knew the upper reaches of these riverswell, and demonstrates his extraordinary visual memory. Aseaman whose ship visited Falmouth would not ordinarily havegone to these places, so one could speculate that Wallis mayhave worked on a Westcountry sailing barge, which would havegiven him a good knowledge of this area. The owner of thispainting inherited it from his aunt. She was given the paintingby her neighbour in Mullion, the artist Gwinneth Jones-Parrywhom she had looked after in her old age. Gwyneth Jones-Parry had been married to the Hungarian artist and authorIstván Szegedi-Szuts (1892-1959) who came to Britain in1936. His books include 'My War' and 'Letters from Stalingrad'.He showed work at the Redfern Gallery in London and also atNewlyn Art Gallery. A self-portrait by him is in the collection of Falmouth Art Gallery. 'Three Sailing Vessels on a River' wasgiven to István (Stevan) and Gwinneth on their marriage in1937 by Jim Ede. At the time Jim Ede was a junior curator atthe Tate, who received bundles of paintings from Alfred Walliswith accompanying letters, which are now in the Tate collection.Jim Ede purchased many of these paintings, which form thebasis of the most important collection of the artist's work atKettle's Yard Cambridge. There is a particularly interestinginscription on the back of this painting, it reads: 'For Stevanand Gwinneth, their marriage 1937 from Jim Ede. Painting byAlfred Wallis'. The back of the painting has never beendisturbed. Michael Harrison, the director of Kettle's Yard said itis a 'typical Jim Ede frame'. Estimate: £20,000.00 - £25,000.00
