My First Thanksgiving Day By Victoria Lopez

It seems like yesterday when I first walked into, the English

as a Second Language class. The year was 1960.

As my eyes searched the front row for an empty seat, I

noticed an extraordinary good looking student sitting next to the

empty seat. As I approached the seat, the student welcomed me with a

smile, showing his perfect white teeth.

I never would have dreamed that after a few months of

attending the class, I would become the wife of that handsome

classmate of mine who happened to be an immigrant from Russia.

Soon after our marriage, one day he came home from work and after

giving me the usual kiss, he set a 30 pound turkey on the table and

said, “This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving Day and ten or so of our

friends are coming for dinner. Please cook the

turkey so we can celebrate.”

“What is that?” I asked looking at the

humongous turkey.

“First,” I said, “I don’t know how to cook

THAT!” pointing at the turkey.

“And secondly what is Thanksgiving

Day?”

“My dear wife,”

he said, “You have three

days to answer all your

questions.”

Well, the next

day I called Pat my dear

and only friend, and she

was American born. She

immediately came to the

rescue bringing me a Betty

Crocker’s cookbook

(which I have kept for over 50 years) Pat also

explained to me the meaning of Thanksgiving Day.

So, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day

with a delicious baked turkey. Our group included

people from Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Russia

and Mexico. All of us immigrants were adapting to

the American tradition and culture.

Yes, I have celebrated over fifty

Thanksgiving holidays in my new adopted country.

Each celebration provides memories, and also

brings back old memories, the precious gift of

Heaven, the birth of my son and my daughter. I

watched them grow up under the strict rules of

their father. Then as teenagers graduating from

high school, we were proud to see them admitted

to highly respected universities, including:

UCLA, Stanford and Harvard.

My memories of their marriages are

blessings, including the glorious time when I felt

the tender love of

becoming a Grand-

mother. Yes I am now an

Abuelita that loves my

two children and my five

grandchildren more and

more, as time passes.

Most of the years on

Thanksgiving Day my

children, their spouses

and my grandchildren,

remember many cherished moments from the

past, but we also shed some tears because there is

an empty chair. The handsome Russian student

that the young Mexican girl met so many years

ago in school had passed away at the age of 89.

His physical presence was missing but his spirit,

we thought, was there with his beloved family.

Every year brings life changes, some

good, some sad but with love and gratitude

Thanksgiving will always be special.
