We all aspire to earn all we
can and save all we can, why not
also aspire to give all we can?
God has created a world capable
of providing what we need, now
it’s our responsibility to be good
stewards of it. As our season of
Stewardship celebration
continues to deliver messages of
inspiration, we must all look
inside our hearts and prayerfully
reassess our giving goals. God is
calling us in our hearts to step
outside of our comfort zone of
giving so that we may accomplish great things for His
glory.
Our church leadership teams have been working for
months and have assembled a faithful spending plan for
2017-2018. This plan will challenge us to exceed last
year’s annual giving by $43,000, or about a 7% increase.
This inspiring challenge is well within the scope of
Broadway’s generosity. Ministry team chairs have
compiled and submitted yearly budget requests. Each
chair has also submitted their “wish list” items as well. An
increase in giving would make requests and “wish list”
items possible and would also support expanding
programs in our ministry areas. Here are just some of the
accomplishments we could achieve for a few of our
ministry areas:
Children’s Ministries:
New and updated Sunday school
curriculum.
Expanding 3-5h grade Vacation
Bible School programming to include
field trips and more service
opportunities.
All God’s Children ministry
support events, expanding our
ministry to other congregations and
ministries in our community and
beyond.
Development of a Junior Youth
Fellowship small group for children in grades 3-5.
Youth Ministries:
Youth sponsor coverage for adult costs on mission
trips, retreats, etc. so youth fees are reduced which
reduces overall costs of these trips.

● Expand Wednesday Night Live (Youth group)
events
● New Middle school Sunday school curriculum
● New Youth Fellowship events i.e. Murder Mystery

● Child care for individuals/families involved in the
Choir and Ensemble
● Nominal stipends for drummer, bass player, and
intern tenor vocalist for Contemporary worship
We are a spiritual family committed to our faith and
giving generously and gratefully is one of our
spiritual practices (Eight Keys of Discipleship). Please
join us in this challenge so that we may give our
best to God by returning your pledge cards to the
church office by Consecration Sunday, May 21st so
we know our community can depend on your financial
support. It will be exciting and rewarding to
witness Broadway’s transformation from what we are
to what we can be.

Sharing the News and Growing Our Mission
The April 25 meeting of the Broadway Christian
Church Board was called to order by Board Chair Leslie
Clay at 7:00 p.m. She opened the meeting with a
reminder of the church’s mission statement, and that
there were no action items on the agenda to allow for
more time to discuss the draft ‘17-’18 church budget.
Ministry Reports
All ministry areas submitted a written ministry
summary, which are included in the complete Board
minutes.
‘17-`18 Budget Discussion
The Executive Committee met two times to review
ministry area requests and the recommendations from
Broadway’s Finance Team. At its second meeting,
Executive Committee members voted to recommend an
increase of 5.6% to fully fund requested increases.
Ministry areas requesting increases in funding were
Personnel, Children and Youth Ministries and Worship &
Liturgical Arts. Each area’s representative made an
excellent case for the requested increases.
Aaron Sapp, Stewardship Co-Chair, spoke to the
dedication and hard work of the Stewardship team. The
team has embraced the challenge of a 5.6% goal.
Following a summary of the Executive Committee
meeting and remark by the ministers, the meeting was
adjourned at 8:47 p.m. The next Board meeting will be
May 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Where were you in ‘52?

bopper swooning to Sinatra or
your parents weren’t even born
yet—you will enjoy the May 13
Ladies’ Brunch as we celebrate
the Fabulous Fifties!
Tickets are on sale this
Sunday (last one!) for the Brunch

event would be a great time to pull them
out of the closet!

popular cuisine of the decade. Jell-O
salad anyone? There will also be a
“soda bar” for Coke or root beer floats!

Ladies Brunch Celebrates the Fab Fifties!
On Sunday, June 11, the
Broadway family will come
together for a combined
worship service at 10:30 a.m. in
the Christian Life Center. June
11 is one of those special
Sundays when we gather to
recognize, remember and
celebrate another wonderful
year of ministry at our Annual
Meeting!
Following our 10:30 a.m. worship, the Connections
Ministry volunteers will have the table set for our annual
chicken dinner, also in the CLC. The Annual Meeting will
get underway as we are enjoying our lunch, celebrating
staff anniversaries, thanking our
outgoing Board officers and
members and ending with the
congregational affirmation of the
2017-2018 budget.
New this year—following
lunch, Broadway’s children will be
invited outside to the field just
east of the CLC to enjoy Field
Day activities. There will be
games, crafts and other supervised activities for the kids!
Make your plans now to attend our Annual Meeting
and Chicken Dinner—a Broadway tradition 59 years in
the making!
Celebrating Another Wonderful Year on June 11
Sure, that's part of what
CareLink is all about--feeling loved
and sharing that love. In fact, this
month the CareLink Shawl Team
ministry held a training session and
found that we have lots of beautiful,
comforting shawls and lap robes to
deliver to our church family. We
even have special sizes for babies.
If you ever want to see some of the
shawls available, stop by the shawl
display ladder in the church
Narthex. And don't be shy,
ANYONE can pick up a shawl and
deliver it to someone who really needs a
boost, someone who needs to know that they are loved and
cared for by our church family. Just fill out the little form
beside the shawls so we will know who got one.
In last Sunday's services the children demonstrated how
CareLink literally links all of us together into one caring
family. And the children were so happy to touch one of the
handmade shawls.
Did you know that the shawls are blessed before they are
delivered? Did you know that ministers, elders, deacons and
church family members often take them to people who
especially need comforting?
Susan Burns, prayer shawl coordinator, welcomes anyone
who crochets, knits, weaves or creates the
shawls. This is a beautiful ministry that takes
bits and pieces of yarn and turns them into
tangible love that can be shared among
people. If you ever want to make a prayer
shawl, just call Susan (875-5141) and she will
welcome you.
By the way, did you know that we have crafters
in our church who make small "leave behinds"
to be delivered when our CareLink Care
Center team makes visits? You should see
the beauty of these crocheted angels,
bookmarks and other items. Again, tangible
love.
(in tinted box would you please put this part)
CareLink is Growing!
This has been a busy month for all CareLink services:
*Card Ministry*Bereavement Ministry*Care Center

We are eager to begin the newest CareLink service, CALLS
OF CONCERN. But first, we need a few more volunteers.
Please contact Patsy Dalton (356-6036 or
[email protected]) or Linda Poehlmann (234-1950 or
[email protected]) to volunteer. Just a few calls a
week will make a huge difference!

Spirited Singers Sing for 60+
The April 24 60+ Luncheon was the group’s final noon
gathering until the fall, so why not close out the year with a
fun sing-along with folks you know?
Broadway’s Spirited Singers provided the
entertainment for the lunch, singing music from
the ‘40s and ‘50s. There was even a dance
number, tapped out by own very own Ruth
Akerson!.

C A L E N D A R You see our Sunday morning
Servants every week. They greet
you at the outside doors. Another
may invite you don a name tag.
Still others will hand you a worship
bulletin with a smile. Broadway’s
Sunday mornings just couldn’t
happen without these special
volunteers!
We need more folks to serve as
Greeters and Ushers on Sunday
mornings at both the traditional and
contemporary worship services.
Our Greeters meet members and visitors at our entry doors in both
the Narthex and Fellowship Hall; or may sit at the name tag station
to greet and offer information and name tags to visitors and
members. Ushers distribute worship bulletins at the Sanctuary
doors; take an attendance count; pass out the attendance “sign in”
books; and assist with collecting offering and serving communion.
Training for Ushers is available, or a new volunteer can be paired
with an experienced Usher to learn the ropes.
There are other ways you can help as well. In the back of the
Sanctuary, our technical booth now has three chairs—one for
audio, one for projection and one for video. While Tech Guru
Michael Tatum oversees the entirety of the operation, we rely
heavily on volunteers to serve as audio, video and projection
techs. Training is necessary for these volunteer positions, and
can be scheduled in a group or individually.
All volunteers are scheduled on a rotational schedule, with our
new schedule beginning on July 1. If you have events or trips
already on your calendar for 2018, we are happy to schedule
around any conflicts!

office at 445.5312.

Schedule Is Available Now!/1
Attention Parents! The 2017 Summer Church Camp
schedule for the Christian Church of Mid-America
camps (or as we like to remember it, NEOLA) is now
available! You can find the schedule online at
www.???? Or find a paper copy in the church office.
And new this year—registration and payment is entirely
online!
For 2017, all but one camp session will be held at
Camp Covenant Point, a Presbyterian-owned camping
facility in Holts Summit. According to Pastor Nick, the
facilities and grounds have a very “Rickman-like” feel—
adding to the enthusiasm for this year’s camping ministry
and programs!
If you would like more information about the different
camp sessions, please contact Kahlea in the church
office at 445.5312.

Broadway’s Baptism Class has been meeting
since the beginning of Lent, learning and growing
in their understanding of their faith. Each Sunday
morning since, the class has met during the
Christian Education Hour with one of Broadway’s
ministers. Additionally, each Baptism candidate is
paired with a Baptism Mentor, a person of mature
faith and a spiritual leader of our church, to meet
one-on-one for deep or casual discussion—and
sometimes just for fun!
The 2017 Baptism Class will spend an
overnight retreat at Broadway June 2-3. This final
pre-Sunday gathering will go over the practical
side of Sunday Baptism (like how do you get
down those steps?) to any final questions of faith.
Baptisms will take place during worship on
Pentecost Sunday, June 4.

Final Preparations
On Friday, June 5, from 7:30-10:00 p.m., Broadway will host
an African Dance Party to benefit Step Up!, a local non-profit
whose mission is to provide mental health care for Rwandan
women.
Tickets for the Dance Party are $5, and food and drinks will be
available for purchase. The party will feature danceable tunes
(with a DJ) and an opportunity to meet immigrants and refugees
from the African continent in a casual setting. The Dance Party is
part of a weekend of activities and workshops highlighting African
culture.
Many Step Up clients are survivors of the Rwandan genocide,
and face challenges associated with post-traumatic stress
syndrome. Step Up has raised funds to open and staff a
treatment center for women in Butare, Rwanda.

wove a tapestry of worship experiences that led us
through celebration, the wrenching betrayal, the

Broadway members Randy and Gayle Hulsebus
are long-time American Field Service student
exchange sponsors. The following article by Randy
explains why AFS is such an important program—and
why you might consider being a part of it!
What happens when you host an international
exchange student? Everything changes.
The student is given this wonderful opportunity to
live in another country. They learn a different
culture by experiencing the customs and traditions
of the host family. They share their culture with
everyone they meet.
The host family opens their home and their hearts
to a very special person. The student becomes a
part of their family.
The school and community are enriched by
learning about another part of the world. The
fellow students get the opportunity to teach
someone about their school, community, and
country.
Friendships are made that last a lifetime. One
volunteer we know had seven of the eight
students they hosted return for their youngest
daughter’s wedding. The students make great
tour guides of their home country. There is an
article about our trip to Italy where we met up with
five students on the AFSUSA.org website under
Hosting.
The home family and community learn about the
USA when the student returns. They learn that we
are more than the headlines in the news, or what
they have seen in movies.
The world news becomes more interesting as the
places mentioned are someone’s home. And the
numbers are family and friends of someone you
know.
Exchange students are not your average teenager.
They are smart, self-confident, and mature. They are
interested in the world. They tend to become world
travelers as they want to learn by experiencing it.
Many become leaders. We know of ones that have
coordinated the drilling of a well, the building of a
medical clinic, and the creation of a library in their
home communities.
We are currently hosting our seventh student
through the exchange organization American Field
Service (AFS). Each one has been unique,
interesting, and we have fallen in love with each of
them. There have been challenges, but we belong to
a wonderful organization. AFS is almost all volunteers
that have been trained to help the students and host
families through any situation. A volunteer will help
match students with families for a successful
placement.
AFS was started by ambulance drivers during
World War I and World War II, as a means of seeking
peace through exchanges with other cultures. Host
families are registering now for student placement in
August 2017.
I can’t think of a better way to show God’s love
then to provide food and shelter to one of his children.
