Many students have taken up our before and after school swim club, with some students being chosen to represent Northfield at the SAPSASA swimming carnival. Many teachers and SSOs have volunteered to support Sarah at the pool in the mornings and after school. I would like to thank all staff for enabling our students to participate. Sports Day is planned this term. It will be a COVID safe event and we will notify families what this means for them closer to the event. Students have nominated for captaincy, presented their persuasive speeches to their teams and students have voted in our team captains and vice captains. I would like to congratulate all students who were brave enough to participate in this process. Sports Day is a great day of competition, fun and teamwork. It is great to see students trying hard and supporting their teams to succeed. It is also an opportunity to teach our students how to lose. To have a winner we must also have losers. There are many times in our lives where we will experience disappointment. School events such as Sports Day allow our children to learn how to manage the disappointment that comes with losing, in a safe environment. This is an extremely important skill to navigate the challenging lives we all live. Last year we were extremely proud of the way our students managed the disappointment of our Sports Day being cancelled, along with many other school events they were looking forward to. We saw students supporting each other and just getting on with things. It was extremely rewarding to see our students manage in such difficult circumstances. We are hoping this year will not bring more disappointment and our Sports Day is one of fun, great competition and enjoyed by all. While we understand the importance of being COVID safe, we miss families coming into our classrooms. Until we get back to a normalstate, we have been creative with how our students can share their learning environments with families. Students have spoken to their teachers about what they wanted their families to know about their learning environment. Each class has produced a short virtual tour of our classrooms and uploaded them to seesaw. We hope families enjoy them. Please remember families can make a time to meet with teachers throughout the term by: leaving a message with Cindy, emailing your teacher directly or through a seesaw message. Hi everyone, my name is Nick and I am the Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) at

Northfield Primary. It has been a busy start to the year and it’s fantastic to see so many happy, smiling students at school.

I co-ordinate the Breakfast Club at Northfield so you will often see me serving toast, cereal and fruit from the canteen at the start of the school day. We even have cups of air available if you would like one (ask your children about this). Mornings can be hectic times for families and sometimes children arrive at school still

feeling hungry. Please encourage your children to visit Breakfast Club between 8:20am and 8:50am if they need a piece of toast or fruit to keep them going until recess.

A big part of my role is engaging with the students and helping them to have a fun, safe and enjoyable time at school. I love spending time out in the yard at recess and lunch, either playing sport, sitting and chatting with a group of children or even

attempting to climb the playground equipment. I also support students with their

social and emotional needs, provide in-class support and assist disengaged students to return to the classroom.

Last year I ran a cooking challenge with some of the year 6/7s. It was a lot of fun and all of the food was very tasty. We are cooking again this year so keep an eye out for pictures of their amazing dishes in upcoming newsletters.

I also co-ordinate the family bread which is supplied to our school on Thursdays. A big thankyou to the local church support group who have supplied funding for the purchase of re-usable calico bread bags. For those families who regularly receive a bag of bread, the new bags can be taken home on Thursdays and then returned to be filled again the following week.

I am also available for family support and can help direct you to local community organisations, or if you just want to talk and have someone who will listen. I am at Northfield school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and can be reached by contacting the school on 08 8262 2607.

Thanks - Nick Dodd PCW

Sports Day Leadership Team This year we had 64 Year 4 to 7 students nominate for a student leadership position in preparation for Sports Day 2021. These stu-dents all presented speeches at their team meetings held on Friday of Week 3. All students did really well explaining why they wanted the position and why they thought they would do it well. It was great to see so many students wanting to take on an official leadership role within the school.

35 students have been selected to fulfil the roles of House Captains, Vice Captains and Junior Captains for 2021. These students are to be congratulated on this achievement and we look forward to seeing them in these leadership roles as we prepare for Sports Day, and as they continue to learn more about leadership and develop their own leadership skills.

The Kindness Project This year, the year 7’s have been focusing on kindness. ‘The Kindness Diaries’ is a Netflix TV show that inspired the year 7s to spread kindness all over Northfield. To show their kindness, they have created gifts for the new receptions, and as a result of this, the new receptions are feeling more welcome to Northfield Primary School. The students have made unique gifts such as origami, stuffed toys and cos-tumes and students have put a lot of effort and dedication for their gifts to the new receptions. Ms To-land and Mr Thomas have bought materials for the students in order to create their gifts.

A huge thank you to them for preparing and helping the year 7s to welcome the new ones. Elisha from Room 9, had created a fantastic drawing book. Her buddy enjoyed the gift a ton, and she started drawing in it! Zainab from Room 10 made origami crane and a special envelope with origami flowers, her buddy said she loved her gift. Another example was Bibi from Room 9 created a vase of origami flowers, It was extremely beautiful and it stands out.
