The success of our school depends on all of us working together to create a wonderful learning environment for our children. The PTA mission: “To make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.” This school year is well underway and we have many great PTA sponsored events coming up and we hope that you will be able to attend. On Oct 28th, we have our very popular Halloween Party, this is a Family event and eve- ryone is invited. On the 4th of November, we have our World Kaleidoscope event. This will be another great PTA event to share and learn about all the different cultures that we have Owen. We are still looking for families to share their culture or foods at this special event. Please see the ad inside this newsletter. The Owen Resale was held on Saturday, September 10th in the Gym here at Owen. This event is truly amazing. It is a huge undertaking, but it al- ways comes together at the end and always with great results. The Resale along with Market Day are our only money makers for the PTA. Please read the article on the Resale in this newsletter. I would like to thank the Resale committee and its sellers for another great Fall Resale. From the Principal’s Desk

October certainly reminds us that school is really in session. Routines are all pretty well set

and I've started to see more jackets and fewer flip-flops among our students. We haven't yet

started to have many leaves change color, so that is something to look forward to in the coming

weeks. I hope everyone has a chance to go outside and enjoy the fall weather that is one of the

best attributes of our local climate.

PTA Reflections Art Contest

2011-2012 Theme: “Diversity Means….” Entry Deadline: October 12, 2011 Contact: Kim Theiss email: [email protected]

Each year your PTA sponsors an art contest for students K-12. Students compete at their local school for an opportunity to advance to district, state and national levels. More than the competition is the invitation for stu-dents to express themselves in a fresh way. The Art in Education committee hopes to encourage every stu-dent to submit at least one entry, if not more. There are six categories to choose from and no limit to how a student can interpret the theme. Categories include: Visual Arts Music Video Production Photography Dance/Choreography Literature Entry forms and official rules may be downloaded from the Owen Elementary website at http://owen.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=38004. If you have any questions regarding participating in this National PTA program, please contact Kim Theiss at [email protected].

Donuts with Dad

Dads, come share a morning treat with your student. You are

invited to our next Donuts with Dad on Friday, October 14th.

Watch your email for RSVP information.

Dads and Donuts FAQ's: What is Dads and Donuts? Dads and Donuts is a PTA sponsored event which provides an opportunity for Dad's and their children to start off their day other Dad's and students.

Do I need to RSVP by Friday to attend? No, but one is greatly appreciated. In an effort to manage our costs for this event, we estimate the amount of donuts and beverages required based on the number of attendees from the emails received.

What do I need to bring? Nothing, the event is provided through business donations and PTA funding.

What time is the event and how long does it last? We begin at 8:00 a.m. and the event ends at the first school bell. If you have the opportunity to come at 7:30, we wouldn't mind some extra hands to help set everything up.

Where is the event held? Dads and Donuts is held in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) which is located near the gymnasium.

What is provided? Dads and Donuts includes donuts, coffee (donated by Starbucks), juice, and milk. We order donuts that do not contain any peanuts or peanut products. Questions or to RSVP, contact Bob Murray at [email protected]

Our annual Halloween event is scheduled for Friday, October 28th at 6:00 pm. If you have attended the event in the past, you know it is a great way to spend an evening with family and friends. The PTA plans games, entertainment and food for over 500 people! It truly is a huge event!

In order to make this year's event successful, we will again need over 200 volunteers during the evening and more importantly, we need a dedicated group of at least 6-7 people to coordinate the planning process. This scale of this event is dependent on the number of volunteers involved. The amount of games and activities will be reduced if we do not have enough volunteer support.

Planning Committee to include coordinator(s) for Food (2) Decorations (2) Games (2) Volunteers (2) Cake Walk/Other Entertainment If you are willing to help coordinate the event, please contact Melissa Naffziger at [email protected]. This year, PTA members will receive free admission to the event. Non-PTA members will be charged $2/child. Food and game tickets will be available for purchase for all attendees. Each family attending is asked to volunteer for a short time during the event. Watch your email for detailed RSVP information and volunteer sign up.

Red Ribbon Week

October 23-29 Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, takes place an-nually in October.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against ille-gal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Watch your email for information about how Owen will participate in Red Ribbon Week.

Information about Red Ribbon Week listed here was taken from the IPSD website http:ipsdweb.ipsd.org/IPPC/Default.aspx/

Clip Them and Send Them In! Two easy ways for all Owen families to get involved in helping raise funds for the school and the PTA are through the Box Tops for Education and the Labels for Education programs. Box Tops and Labels UPC's are on so many of the products that we already use in our homes, so it is as easy as cutting them off the packages before you recycle them, and sending them into school. We have PTA members who do the rest! Box Tops for Education Box Tops are found on many products including General Mills cereals, Pillsbury products, Kleenex tissues, and even Avery office supplies. Just look for the Box Tops emblems, cut them off and send them in to school. Each Box Top we submit is worth $.10, which can really add up. Last year, the PTA made close to $1000 by sending these in. This year we hope to double that number! Also, look for products that have bonus Box Tops and Bonus Certificates that may be issued at the time you check out with your register receipt. If you have any questions regard-ing this program, please email our Box Tops coordinator, Shelly Green at [email protected].

Labels for Education The Labels for Education program rewards participating schools by trading labels for items for our school. Labels for Education are now available on over 2,500 participating products such as Campbell's Soup, Post Cereals, Prego and People Magazine. To contribute to the collec-tion, just clip the Labels for Education logo with the UPC code from the participating products listed on the link then send them to school with your child or drop them in the bin by the eleva-tor next to the LMC. You can also register your Jewel-Osco Preferred Customer Card and/or your Dominick's Fresh Val-ues Card at www.eLabelsAddUp.com to earn points toward Labels for Education. Simply create an account at www.eLabelsForEducation.com by registering your Jewel-Osco Preferred Customer Card and/or your Dominick's Fresh Values Card and selecting our school. Each participating product

that you purchase using your Shopper Card(s) will earn 1 point that will be credited to Owen's Labels for Education account automatically. Plus, you can still clip and redeem participating product UPCs to earn the face value of the Labels for Education points- in addition to the 1 point you earn automatically through eLabels for Education. It's that easy! Contact Christine Janes at (630) 778-0312 or [email protected] with any questions. For participating products, click on this link: http://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn/participating-products.aspx

When you send in your Labels and Box Tops, please send them in an envelope or ziplock bag with your child's classroom marked on the outside. We may be running contests or incen-tives for the class who sends in the most, and your child will want his/her class to get credit. Thanks for supporting these programs.

Owen PTA Resale Fundraiser By Mary Frances Koyl It was a foggy morning for Owen’s semi-annual Resale fundraiser on Saturday, September 10

th. But that didn’t deter hun-

dreds of shoppers from getting great bar-gains and contributing to Owen PTA.

Saturday morning, doors opened to the public at 7:00 am. Shoppers included Owen families, teachers, neighbors, residents from the surrounding cities, and even families from as far as central Illinois. Shopping was open from 7-11:00 am and reopened from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm for the half price sale. A presale was also held on Friday night, September 9

th for Resale vol-

unteers. The Owen gym was filled with gently used children’s clothes, shoes, toys, books, strollers, bikes and baby equipment. The Resale volunteers skillfully organized it into easy to navigate departments. While there were thousands of items to choose from, there was plenty of space to see the merchandise and stake out a spot to sort the loot. There were tons of name brands like Fisher Price, Graco, Schwinn, Duplo, Abercrombie, Gap, AE, Hollister, Nike, and Gymboree just to name a few. Prices were incredible and many items looked as if they were practically new. Everyone was getting great deals.

This mom and daughter duo (above) completed their toddler present shopping for the year, spending about $200! They have attended the Owen Resale for the last several years and are always pleased with the selection and prices. Angie Gaul and Mary Huff, former Owen & McCarty PTA lead-ers and founding coordinators of the Resale, reflected on how the Resale has developed over the past 10 years. “This is our 22

nd Resale. We started doing a joint Resale with McCarty

[Elementary School] and making $3,000. Now we have grown so much. Yesterday, at the presale, we made $6,000.” Last year, the Owen Resales grossed $52,000 with more than $11,000 benefiting Owen PTA. Owen PTA uses the money to fund educational programs, assemblies, field trips, and social events for Owen Elementary students, families and teachers. The Resale is not only a major fundraiser for the Owen PTA, it is also a great way for Owen families to make some extra money and clean out their kids’ closets. Sellers who volunteer for a 4 hour shift get 80% of their ticketed price back. Any un-sold merchandise is returned to the seller. There is also an option to donate unsold small ticket items to charity. As the Resale has grown over the years, the planning committee has diversified to include not only current and former Owen families but also many volunteers from the Naperville and Aurora area. Owen sellers comprise of 25-40% of the sellers, with the majority of sellers and volunteers coming from the community. Since the Owen PTA receives the fund-ing, the Resale committee would like to see continued support from Owen volunteers both on the planning committee and as sellers or volunteers. If you would like more information about becoming a Resale committee member, please contact Carol Alt at [email protected]. Did you miss the Resale in September? Don’t worry…the next Owen Resale will be Saturday, March 3,

2012. More in-

formation will be emailed to PTA members when it is available. To get all the latest news and deadlines for seller sign up, join the Owen Resale Yahoo group by sending a blank email to [email protected]. Or follow on Facebook by searching OwenPTAResale.

PTA Volunteer Opportunities

Helping Hands Households Needed

The Helping Hand Program was established in 1967 to provide children with adult assis-

tance during an emergency. As part of the district's safety program, children learn that a

home displaying a red Helping Hand poster in a front window is a safe place to go when

they are frightened, sick, injured, or lost. Helping Hand households are instructed to

contact the police immediately whenever a child needs assistance.

Interested persons can email Kim Williams, Owen PTA Helping Hand Coordinator, at

[email protected], for more information and an application.

Red Ribbon Week Coordinator

Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, takes place annually in October. A coordinator is needed to work with the Student Services Director, Mr. Martin, to plan the week of activities, order “giveaways” for the students and put up red ribbons around the trees at school. If you are in-terested, please contact Patty Stich, Health and Safety Chair, at [email protected].

GREEN OWL ECO CLUB MEETING WAS SEPTEMBER 21 by Jodi Trendler

Our Green Owls met for our first meeting this year and had a great time! We had the honor of starting our year with a VERY special guest: MR OWEN! Mr. Owen (pictured stand-ing), Owen Wavrinek--our school’s namesake, joined us for our first meeting to discuss taking pride in our school and how we can all help to keep our school beautiful. This summer, Mr. Owen spent a significant amount of time trying to keep up with the weeds in the front of the school building, but unfortunately due the significant size of the gardens at our school, was unable to keep up. He enlisted the help of our district Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Mr. Todd DePaul (pictured seated) to gain control of the weed population, as well as trim the bushes in the front so that our school looks much more inviting. Mr. Owen also plans to work with the district staff to help develop a re-landscaping plan for the front of the building. If any parents are interested in helping with this project, please contact Jodi Trendler: [email protected].

Environmental Committee News

During our meeting we discussed VERMICOMPOSTING, which is composting using worms. Everyone enjoyed seeing, touching, feeding and re-bedding our squirmy little red friends. We learned that vermicomposting is a great way to keep food waste out of landfills where it is only a waste product, and can be turned into a very valuable fertilizer for our gardens and plants. Keeping worms is VERY easy and a great way to save money by making your own fertilizer at home! For further information on vermicom-posting, here is a great website with a fun interactive game you can play with your students: http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/Vermi/Game/wormbin.html

And if you are interested in purchasing a vermicomposter like the one we have used for your own use: http://www.amazon.com/Worm-Factory-DS3GT-3-Tray-Composter/dp/B000S6LZBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316794946&sr=8-1

Our project for the day was to make shirts for our meetings. We used recycled felt to make owl cut-outs to be ironed on our shirts and then we decorated them with various paints. Be sure to wear your shirts for our meeting next month on October 19
