Preschool News
This newsletter celebrates the wonderful things happening in our Preschool.
This term we continue to practice recycling and have now added 2 new bins for
the children; the worm bin and a recyclable plastics bin. Children are getting very
proficient at sorting out their rubbish. They especially enjoy feeding
banana peels to the worms.
Have you noticed the wonderful wall mural we are
completing with help from Tania Kunze (Tatty K), our local
artist in resident? Children have done most of the work, painting the
sky, hills, clouds and plants. Tania is on holiday in Japan at the
moment, learning about Japanese pottery. She will be back during the
July holidays and if weather permits, we will be continuing with the
wall mural. Families please keep an eye on
our Facebook page, as we will be
organising a Preschool community
painting day through the page.
We have had a visit from Alex and Kate, our local
ambulance service officers. They showed us all the
equipment they have in the ambulance and even let us
sit on the stretcher and wheel chair. We discussed the
number to call when there is an emergency. Leading on from their
visit, we have discussed about how to keep ourselves safe and
learning to bandage our limbs!
Milly and Molly, Jenny’s guinea pigs came
for a visit last week. We did life observational
drawings of them. They sat very still for us, busy
munching on the grass around them. Children were
very fascinated with how the guinea pigs eat
long grasses, munching on carrots and apples.
We talked about what they need to keep them
happy and healthy.
Some sensory activities we have
programed this fortnight are smelling different
herbs and fruits, feeling gloop, crushing herbs
using mortar and pestle and tasting dahl cooked
by the children. We have looked at some lemons from Jenny’s garden,
smelt them and did some observational drawings.
Next term we will be going on an excursion to Monarto Zoo
with our buddies from Room 12. We will be focusing on animals, insects
and the environment. We will discuss how important it is to keep the
environment healthy for us and for the animals.

The Year 7 class who are currently investigating and
researching “Water in the world” recently had a
special visit from Andrew Day a teacher from
Cornerstone College.
Andrew was recently involved in a 400 km bike ride
from Nairne to Mildura with a group of 10 cyclists to
raise funds for the "HOPE Ride for Water" charity. In
excess of $14,000 was raised which will provide a
bore for safe drinking water for the Bwikaragye
Primary School in Uganda.
Currently 250 students along with several hundred
villagers have no access to clean water within 4km.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and
connect Andrew's experiences. The students were
able to relate to the big picture of water scarcity in
other parts of the world, view photos of the children
and their families in Bwikaragye and learn about the
fundraising ride and what it achieved.
The Year 7 class were truly inspired by Andrew and
the efforts of the team who showed how everyday
people on the other side of the world can take action
and do something positive to make a big difference to
the lives of others. Students are now involved in
further research, investigating the different ways they
can showcase what they have discovered about water
in the world.

Our school is participating in the Heart Foundation
Jump Rope for Heart physical activity and fundraising
program. We have been a major fundraiser in this
event in past years and it has been very successful.
This fundraiser encourages children to move and be
physically active, contributing to the recommended 60
minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per
day for young people.
At the end of the first week Term 3, your child will
bring home a sponsorship form and you may also wish
to set up an online sponsorship link: As in previous
years, there are incentive prizes for those who raise
from $30 upwards.

Our online page will show a leader board as
sponsorships progress. This fundraising program will
also run in conjunction with Premier’s Be Active
Challenge. This will be conducted in each class and
your child will be able to record their daily physical
activity in their personal log book. The Challenge is to
do at least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least 5
days of the week for 4 weeks. Thank you for your
support.

Soup Day Helpers
Last Friday we held a Hot Soup Day. We would like
to thank the volunteer parents/caregivers who helped
on the day or leading up to the day with collating the
orders:
Khet Roy, Theresa Fisher, Pam Grego, Bryan
McDonald and Amy Clark.
Thank you also to the students from Mrs
Claridge’s class who helped out with the
deliveries of the soup to classes.
Aboriginal Cultural Studies
On Tuesday some of our students were involved in
learning the art of aboriginal basket weaving. We are
grateful that Ellen Trevorrow, grandmother of Will,
Keira and Mia came with Noreen to give cultural studies
workshops to 6 classes and all our Aboriginal students.
Ellen and Noreen are Ngarrindjeri Elders.
Final Notice letters were posted 24/5/17 to various
families requesting payment in full within 30 days.
Appropriate follow up action will now be taken.
Statements for outstanding extra curricula events were
sent home via students last week requesting payment
before the end of this term.
Thank you to those families who have paid their
voluntary Building Fund donation, and remember to
claim this on your 2016/17 Tax return.
Payments towards our voluntary Building Fund can
still be made. At this stage we still need to raise
another $10,000.00 so your contribution will be greatly
appreciated.
If you have any financial difficulties with payment of
school accounts please do not hesitate to contact the
school and speak to the Principal, or our Finance
Officers, Judi Daniel or Sandy Mitchell. Options are
always available but need to be put in place early.
